Be it known that I, Jnssn TABOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at 0akland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindshields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in auxiliary or side wind-shields adapted for use in connection with the various wellknown standard. types of wind-shields now used in connection with motor driven vehicles.
The principal objects of the present invention are to provide a construction whereby the shield portion is curved in such manner as to deflect air outwardly and away from the vehicle occupants. To provide a construction wherein a plurality of adjustments of the auxiliary shields relatively to the main shield may be quickly and easily made; to provide a construction which is neat in appearance, capable of being easily attached and. wherein the various adjustments may be readily accomplished.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it beingunderstood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor detailsof'construction. within the scope of the claims may beresorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention.

The present auxiliary shield is preferably constructed and mounted in the following manner:
The elongated body 6 of transparent material forming the side or auxiliary shield maybe formed of any desirable width and preferably of a length corresponding to the height of the main shield sections a and 5, when said,auxiliary shield sections are arranged in a plane parallel therewith, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
To deflect the air striking the member 6 i in a direction from the vehicle carrying the auxiliary shield and with the least wind resistance, and to further provide an artistic auxiliary shield, I bend the transparent adjacent its longitudinal side edges providing the reverse curved portions 7 and 8 connected by a straight central portion 9, Fig. 2 of the drawings. Viewed endwise, my improved transparent auxiliary shield presents a modified S in appearance, Fig. 2 of the drawings.
To support this transparent shield, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,
In order to enable the channeled frames 10 to be pivoted so that the same will conform to the angle of cut of the ends of the trans parent member 6, I extend through the openings. 12 suitable fulcrum pins 14 carried by a coupling member 15, provided with an opening 16 arranged at right angles to the pin 14. The outer end of the pin 14 is preferably flattened or enlarged in any suitable manner as at 17, to prevent the frame from pulling therefrom, and at the same time to enable the frame to pivot thereon. Uniting the respective couplings 1.5 associated with opposite ends of the transparent shield section 6 is a connecting rod 18 formed preferably in two sections coupled together with a threaded sleeve 19 in the longitudinal center thereof, said connecting rod adjacent its threaded ends 20 which pass through the openings 16, is bent as at 21 to provide the main portion A. offset from and disposed parallel with the end portions B. Clamp ing nuts 22 are threaded to the opposite ends. of the connecting member 18, to hold the coupling members 15 tightly on the member 18, and at the same time forming a friction joint between the ends of the connecting member 18 and the opposite ends of the shield 16. This friction connection retains the shield in its adjusted position and at the same time permits the shield to be varied or moved into any position permitted by the axial movement of the coupling members 15 about the ends 20 of the connecting rod without the use of wrenches or the like being necessary.
To support the auxiliary shield parallel with the standard 1, I prefer to employ the split spring clamp members 22 formed of a single piece of metal, bent upon itself, the bend extending around the connecting member 21, as at 23, and the free ends being formed with opposing V-rocosses 2 1, for engaging the irregular standard 1. The clamp is preferably held in. position by the adj ustment of suitable securing members 25, which tightly clamp the connecting rod 18 and secure the same to the standard 1. I prefer to employ two clamps 1 adjacent each end of the connecting rod. 18.
To provide a weather or yieldable contact strip between the edge of the curved portion 7 of the auxiliary shield 6 and the front portion of the main windshield sections 4; and 5, I use a channeled member 26, preferably of rubber and in which received the terminal edge of the curved portion 7, said yieldable channeled member carrying a flexible tongue 27 which is adapted to be forced into contact with the front surface of the shield sections 4 and 5. The strip 26 is preferably of a length corresponding to that of the length-of the auxiliary shield 6.
In order to enable the lower edge of the auxiliary shield section to be positioned in close proximity to the upper edge of the upper rail of a vehicle body, thereby excluding as much air as possible from the occupants of the vehicle, I provide a connection between the opposite ends of the shield section 6 and the connecting member 18, which terminates. short of the lower edge of the channeled member, and the same is preferably constructed in the following manner:
In this modified form of construction I employ the usual channeled member 28, and at one side thereof provide a threaded nipple 29, into which is threaded the lower end of a coupling elbow 30, the portion 31 thereof extending at right angles to the portion received in the opening 9-9, being entirely threaded as at 32 to receive the threaded end 20 of the connecting rod. A clamp nut 33, to hold the connecting rod relatively to the elbow 30 is provided and the same is capable of being forced down on the upper end of said elbow 30 as. in Fig. 8 of the drawing.
To provide a clamp which is capable of universal attachment to standards of various cross-sectional configurations and to provide a ready adjustment for the clamp, which permits of quick adjustment of the shield, I prefer to use the following construction:
A strip 34 of relatively flat material is bent at one end as at 35 backwardly on itself as at 36,'and the opposite end thereof is looped as at 37 backwardly on itself as at 38, the bend of the loop 37 being in a direction opposite to that of 35, providing two terminal end portions 36 and 38 lying one on each side of the main straight portion 39 of the body 341. The loop 37 is adapted to receive the standard 1 and the bent portion is adapted to inclose the connecting rod 18. .Alined openings are provided in the overlapping terminal portions of the material 3% and through the same pass the clamping bolts 40, carrying on their opposite ends the clamping nuts 41. In this construction of clamp it will be apparent that the release of the two bolts 410 permits a movement of the connecting rod on its axis to vary the angle of the transparent portions 6, and at the same time releases the clamping action on the standard 1, permitting the clamp to be moved about the standard.
In use, reference being had to Fl 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be apparent that I prefer to position my auxiliary shield with the edge of one of the curved portions lying adjacent the front surface of the shield sections 4 and 5 adjacent the vertical side edge thereof, and with the opposing curve of the shield disposed outwardly so that the air striking the shield will be directed in a fixed path outwardly from the terminal edge of the auxiliary shield 6 and will not merely pass from the rear edge thereof and deflect inwardly toward the vehicle due to the momentum thereof, as is the case when fiat shields, as at present used are employed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A side shield for attachment to vehicle wind shields and capable of positioning to dispose the same angularly from the end of the wind shield with one side edge overlying the forward face of the wind shield and in approximate contact therewith, the same comprising an elongated transparent shield member longitudinally curved in opposite directions adjacent its longitudinal side edges, and means for adjustably and detachably securing the same in operative position relatively to the vehicle wind shield.
2. A side shield for attachment to vehicle wind shields and capable of positioning to dispose the same angularly from the end of the wind shield with one side edge overlying the forward face of the wind shield and in approximate contact therewith, the same comprising an elongated transparent shield member provided in its center with a longitudinally disposed relatively straight portion from opposite sides of which extend the curved portions disposed in opposite directions, and means associated with the transparent shield member for adjustably mounting the same to the vehicle wind shield.
3. A side shield for attachment to vehicle wind shields and capable of positioning to dispose the same angularly from the end of the wind shield with one side edge overlying the forward face of the wind shield and in approximate contact therewith, the same comprising an elongated transparent shield member substantia 1y S-shaped in cross-section, a bracket connected with the side shield in line with its longitudinal center and a clamp associated with said bracket for securing to the vehicle wind shield.
