Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedv Dec. 21, 1920.
Application filed December 17, 1919. .Serial No. 345,626.
To all fw from t may concern Be it known that I, OTTO W. SToL'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mission, in the county of Hidalgo and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful )Improvements in Auxiliary Clutch-Pedal Levers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to auxiliary foot pedal levers for tractors and has for its object to provide a device of this character which actuates and locks the foot pedal.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which permits the operation of the footy pedal at certain times independently of the lever.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can bereadily attached to any tractor and arranged for operative engagement with the foot pedal.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which operates and locks the foot pedal when moved in one direction and disengages the foot pedal when moved in the opposite direction.
A still further object is the provision of a device of this character including a lever provided with an arm which moves downwardly for operative engagement with the foot pedal upon forward movement of the lever.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, and fully claimed in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a tractor with the invention applied.
Fig. 2 is a top plan and sectional view.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken approXimately on the line 3-8 of F ig. 1.
Fig. L is a detailed view of the clutch pedal engaging jaw.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a tractor and B the clutch pedal thereof. A supporting member 5 having one end eX- tending in right angular relation as at 6 is secured to the tractor by means of the bolts 7. This supporting' member may be made in any desired form to properly position the device in alinement with the clutch pedal. A lever 8 is pivoted at the end 9 to the supporting member 5 and includes an enlarged portion 10 adjacent the end 9, having an opening 11. The lever 8 is bent adjacent its intermediate portion so as to permit the lower portion to assume a vertical position while the upper portion inclines to one side so as to clear the seat or other parts of the tractor. A spring pressed latch 12 is slidably mounted on the lever 8 and is provided at its upper end with a handle 13 which is pivotally connected to the upper end of the lever 8. An arm 141 is carried by the lever 8 above theenlarged portion 10. This arm is semi-circular in form and has its end l5 extended in right angular relation to the semi-circular portion, and threaded. The end 15 extends through an opening 16 in the lever 8 and is secured thereto by means of a nut 17, the end 15 being reduced to provide a shoulder adjacent its threaded end Awhich engages one side of the lever 8 to prevent movement ofthe arm through the lever. The end 18 of the arm includes a U-shaped jaw 18 which extends parallel to the end 15 and is arranged to engage the shank of the clutch pedal B. By forming the arm substantially semi-circular, the same will move downwardly when the lever 8 is moved foriwadlly so as to eiiiciently engage the clutch pe a.
A quadrant 19 is provided and includes arms 20 which are secured to the supporting member 5, the upper portion 21 of the quadrant being provided with notches 22. The lever 8, is intended to receive the portion 21 through the opening 11 of the enlarged portion 1() to properly position the latch with respect to the notches 22 so that when the handle 18 is operated, the latch will engage the adjacent notch to lock the lever in position. I do not wish to limit myself to this particular construction of quadrant as it can be made in a single U-shaped piece or composed of several pieces connected to each other.
When it is desired to operate the clutch pedal or lock it in its operative position, the lever 8 is moved forwardly over the quadrant 19 and as the arm 14 is firmly secured to the lever 8 it moves with the lever, but in a downward direction toward the clutch pedal. When the U-shaped aw of the arm engages the shank of the clutch pedal, the
- llatch l2 is operated to lock the lever 8 and the arm 14 in the desired position in engagement with the clutch pedal. Vhen the latch is released and the lever 8 moved rearwardly, the arm 14 moves upwardly and disengages the clutch pedal. The lever S can then be locked at the limit of its rearward movement in spaced relation to the clutch pedal to permit the unobstructed operation of the clutch pedal in the usual manner.
From the foregoing, it will be readily seen that in view of the novel construction of this auxiliary lever, it can be readily attached to any tractor without altering the latter in any manner and as it does not require the clutch pedal to be permanently connected to the lever, it does not interfere with the operation of the pedal when the operator is occupying the seat of the tractor.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. A tractor auxiliary controlling devic comprising a support, a lever pivoted at one end to the support, said lever having an opening adjacent its pivoted end, an arcuate arm having one end reduced and threaded, the other end of said arm being formed into a yoke, the reduced end of said arm being disposed in said opening, a nut engaged with said reduced portion, whereby said arm may be adjusted with respect to the lever.
' 2. A tractor auxiliary controlling device comprising a support, a quadrant carried by theV support, a lever pivoted at one end to the support, said lever having a laterally extending opening, adjacentV said pivoted end, said opening being adapted to receive a portion of said quadrant, to brace said lever, an arcuate arm detachably connected to said lever, the end of said arm includingV a yoke, said arm being arranged to engage a foot pedal from above and move said pedal downwardly, and locking means carried by the lever for engagementwith the quadrant.
' In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
