MARSHALL J. HUGHES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEREOTYPE-BLOCK HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,244, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL J. HUGHES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Stereotype and Electrotype Plates, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for securing stereotype and electrotype plates in the columns of type, or in what is known as the form, and it consists in holding the plate in the form by means of friction applied to a vertical rib or flange having parallel sides, and attached to the under side or back of the plate.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a view of the (bjjzjgof the plate, showing a flange attached, and the manner of holding or securing the plate in the form. Fig. 2 is a view Fig. 3 is a cross-secof the back of the plate. tion of Fig. 2 on m w.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the plate (either stereotype or electrotype.) B represents a flange, which is cast on U represents what is known as furniture, consisting of pieces or blocks of wood or metal used by printers in making up their forms. This flange is preferably cast with the plate, but it may be attached in any other manner. It may be soldered on or dovetailed, and it may be made of any other suitable metal or material, and
attached so that the plate maybe held by the friction produced by the furniture used.- The flange is vertical, and has its sides or surfaces parallel, to adapt the plate to be used with the combination furniture of a printing-press.
Thus constructed, the plate may be adjusted on the form, or removed with greater faeility and dispatch than those heretofore employed, and is more economical of manufacture. To reduce the consumption of metal in casting the plate to a minimum, the rib may be formed in sections of any desired width, or with any suitable space between them, it being only important that the several sections be in line with each other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A stereotype-plate, provided witha vertical rib or flange having its sides parallel, as described. I
MARSHALL J. HUGHES. Witnesses:
