Be' it known that we, THEODORE HILLER and WILL R. MYERS, citizens of the United.

States, residing, at Canton, in the county of which the followin is a speci cation.

The invention re ates to a vertical filing appliance in whichalarge number of loose leaves or cards are adapted to be segregated, and the Object of the improvement is to so construct and arrange such an appliance that it may be used for facilitating the entry or posting of current itemsoitransactions in a large number of individual records or accounts subject to daily or frequent changes.

The appliance is primarily'designed and especially well adapted for carrying in a sino'le case, a large number of loose leaves number of books of the loose leaf ledger type of binder), of. the character employed in commercial banks for posting the individual accounts of current depositors, the changes in which are required to be immedi ately posted so as to permit a balancing and closing of the books of the bank at the end of each business day.

More particular features of the improvement relate to the devices employed for conveniently handling such a large number of leaves or cards in a .single appliance; for

shifting into a conspicuous position, without separating from the series, all the several leaves or Acards upon which entries have been made, until the same have been verified;

and for providing' a .suitable case withl a drop side for exposing the contents, and a hinged cover `serving as a shelf or tray when opened, and which may be closed for completely incasing the leaves for fireproof or other storage, whether the s'ame are in .normal series or in s ifted arrangement.

These features of vthe improvement and other /an'cillary advantages are shown in the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accomp'an ing drawings forming part hereof, in whic igure l is a perspective view of the posting appliance opened for use;

The drop side 5 is hinged at 14 to the cutaway edge of the side wall 2 at the corresponding edge of the bottom plate 4, so that it may be swung upward to completely close the open side of the case, as shown 1n Figs. 3 and 4, or dropped downward to open the same, as shown in Fig. 1; and the cover 6 is hinged at 15 to the upper edge of the other side wall 3, and is provided on its free side and on each end with thewide flanges 16 adapted to overlap the end walls 1 and the drop side 5 for completely inclo'sin'g the contents of the case, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.

The cover 6 and the drop front 5 are provided with coperating locking elements 17 and 17 by means-of which the closed case may be locked; and a bail lB'is preferably provided at Vthe side of the case, and as shown, is pivoted at 19 to the table or stand 20 upon which the case may be mounted, and isl adapted to engage the cover 6 by the entrance of the pins 21 on the corners of the bail into the sockets 21' at the ed es of the case, for holding the cover lin the orizontals position when open, to serve as a shelf for receiving original checks, deposit sl1ps and the like, in the use of the appliance.

The table upon which 'the case may be mounted, is preferably made of the rim channel 20 and the leg angles'22'; and the upper inner flange of the channel member 20, is preferably bent upward to form the L-flange 23, thus providing a rabbeted seat extending along both ends and sides of the table for receiving the bottom rim band 8 of the case, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4; in which relation of the parts, the L-flange -23 of the stand, extends upward inside the bottom rim band of the case and securely holds the same in position upon the stand.

The lower ends of the legs 22 of the stand may bev connected by the longitudinal bars 24 having flanges 24 constituting slides for a transfer drawer, (not shown), which may be Aprovided in the stand for receiving extra loose leaves or loose leaves upon which all entries have been made. Thev legs of the stand are also preferably provided with rollers or casters 25, so that when the ap. plianoe is usedit can be readily moved from one place to another.

-A Lpluralityof spaced longitudinal ybars 26 ar l horizontally mounted or secured upon the bottom plate of the case, and as shown, these bars are provided-with the transverse notches 27, adjacent to their ends, which are vadapted to be detachably engaged with the complementary notches 28, provided in the upright flanges of the transverse angle bars 29 which are secured'by their horizontal flanges to the bottom plate at each end of the case.

The longitudinal bars 26, vare equally spaced apart to correspond with the notches By this construction and arrangement it is evident that any one or all of the leaves, can be shifted toward the open side of the case and some of its notchesv rengaged with a plurality of the spaced bars, as shown for several of the leaves in Fig. 5, and that the leaves thus shifted are distinguished from the leaves remaining in normal position, and tll'e exposed sides of the shifted leaves, which usually contain the balances of deposits or the like, are readily visible for comparison and verification.

when smaller sized leaves vare used, it is obvious that two guide bars may be used, one adjacent to the side wall 3 and one adjacent to Athe open side ofthe case, to serve as guides for the respective 'sides of the leaves, and in such case the ends of these bars may be bent in the form of anL 31` and engaged in the notches 33 formed in the upright flanges 34 of supplementary brackets 35, secured to the end walls of the case, as shown in detail in Fig. 6.

In one end of the case, preferably the forward end, is provided the swinging abut'- ment 36,- which may be hinged along its lower edge at 37 to the upright flange of the same angle bar 29, which engages the spaced bars; and the upper end of this abutment may rest against one flange of the double L bar 13 when the .abutment is in its forward inclined position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, which is the normal position for the use of the appliance for making or posting entries in the loose leaves lled therein.

When it is desired to hold the loose leaves or cords in parallel relation against the follower plate 38 at the other end of the case, means are provided for Swinging and locking the abutment plate 36 in a rearward 1nclined position, as shown by broken lines in Fig. 2, which means may comprise the i toggle links 39 and 39', one of which may be provided with a stop flange 40, coming into play just after the togglejoint of the links passes ytheneutral line, which serves to lock the abutment in its holding position. The abutment plate 36 is provided with suitable slots 41 and a notch 41 for the passing lof the guide bars 31 when vthe same are plate or abutment by swinging the hinged abutment to a rearward .inclined position parallel with the follower abutment, as shown by broken lines in Fig. 2.

The follower plate 38 is formed or secured on the forward edge of the U-shaped bracket 42, which in turn is formed or secured on' the runner bracket 43 which is provided on each side with a forwardly extending J-shaped runner 44, whiehrunners interengage with and are adapted to slide under the inverted J-shaped flanges 45 formed on the sides of the channel 46 forming a track or guideway and being located in the longitudinal channel 10 formed in the f bottom plate of the case` as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.

and are provided with legs extending upward against the outer side of the follower plate 38 and also against the inner side of the clutch lever 47: which springs operate to clamp the clutch jaws -50 against the flanges of the trackway, and to stop and lock the follower in an)T given position. to be readily released, however. by an inward rotation of the upper end of the clutch lever, which may be readilyT done by placing the thumb against the deflected portion 52 of the follower plate and the fore finger against the upper end of the clutch lever.

In the use of the appliance for temporarily filing and posting items on the loose leaves,- as for carrying the individual accounts of the customers of'a commercial bank, a pack of such leaves are placed on edge upon the spaced bars 26 in the normal position shown for the greater number of leaves in Fig. 5, with' all of the notches of the leaves engaged with the corresponding number/ of spaced bars.

In this position, one end leaf is located iagainst the abutment plate 36, swung to its normal forward inclined position, and the Y follower plate is moved by sliding its runners along the guideway, until it abuts the other end leaf in the usual manner, in which position the follower plate is automatically stopped against outward movement by action of the spring clutch 47; and it is evident that the diverging inclinations of the abutment plate and follower plate, permit the upper ends ofthe leaves to be swung apart for inspecting the faces thereof.

The clerk then readily selects/theA particular leaf carr ing the account in which a withdrawal or deposit is to be entered, and removingit fromthe other leaves, makes the necessary entry or entries thereon by a typewriter or other means; after which the lea-f upon which the entry hasbeen made is vreturned to the filing appliance, but is shifted forward one or more ,notches upon` the spaced bars 26 so as to expose the right side of the leaf and thereby the balance or total of the entries made thereon, in the position shown for a few of the leaves` shown in Fig. 5.

The leaves upon which entries have thus been made are permitted to remain in shifted position until the entries are veritied, either by comparison with a duplicate statement of the same account made by another clerk, or otherwise, after which the vshifted leaves are returned to normal position upon the spaced bars.

It is evident that the use of one or more guide bars 31, permits the 4clerk to morereadily return or reassemble the leaves in the case, and also that by an adjustment of these bars, sets of leaves of different sizes may be filed in the case. It is also obvious lthat by the use of a case of greater width than the width of the leaves and by normally locating the extra space on the open side of the case, the Vshifted leaves are always contained within thewalls of the case, whether or not the leaves are in normal or porting stand or table. for tiling in a tireproof or other securing vault.

A tiling appliance for a series of ,leaves including means for supporting the leaves in upright transverse position, an outwardly inclined abutment for one end of the series and an outwardly inclined follower abutment for the other end of the series, and means for swinging yone of the abutments into inwardly inclined position for clamping the leaves against the-other abutment.

A filing appliance for a series of loose leaves including means for alining the leaves in transverse upright position, an abutment for onde'end of the series, a follower plate for the other end of the series, and a guideway for the follower plate, there being J-shaped runners on the follower plate in sliding engagement with inverted J- shaped flanges in the guideway.

13. A filing appliance for loose leaves including a case with means for supporting the leaves in transverse upright position therein, said case having one side open and .having end walls of less height than the wall of the other side.
