SUBSOILER-PLOW AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
Application filed May 26, 1920. Serial No. 382,969.
Be it known that l, F. TOWNER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Santa Ana, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Subsoiler-Plows and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to subsoiler plows and the like, the said invention having for its object the provisions of novel means for mounting the plow standard in oscillatable relation to the beam of the plow. means, being provided for limiting the oscillation of the said standard and for holding it rigid to withstand the strain of the operation of plowing, yet permitting the said standard to swing in one direction for lifting the plow share or subsoiler clear of the soil or furrow, this last mentioned action being permitted when the plow frame is moved rearwardly with relation to the standard.
A further object of this invention is to produce a plow having the characteristics of operation heretofore indicated in which the standard is of strong and durable structure, and whereby it may be connected to the plow beam in a comparatively simple, inexpensive manner.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will. be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote correspond ing parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view of a plow partly in section showing the device embodying the invention incorporated therein;
Fig. 2 illustrates an enlarged detail view of a fragment of a plow beam with the attachment partly in section applied thereto;
Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view in front of the standard, the said standard being shown in elevation, and
Fig. 4: illustrates a sectional view on the line 4& of Fig. 2.
As shown in Fig 1, the plow share and standards are shown duplicated; as the description of one of them will suffice as a disclosure of the construction of both of them, the description will be made in the singular, it being understood that plow may have one or a plurality, each of which may embody the construction of the improved standard, its connection to the beam and other features associated with it.
In these drawings 5 denotes a traction wheel, 6 a crank axle which may support beams such as 7. Each beam comprises, in the present embodiment, parallel bars 8 and 9 spaced apart to form a clearance for the insertion of a plate 10 which is secured between the bars 8 and 9 by fastenings 11 such as rivets, bolts or the like. The plate e tends below the bars is provided with an aperture 12 near is forward lower corner, and preferably the lower edge of this plate has a recess 13 forming a seat for the purposes which will presently appea The standard includes a plate 1a which fits under the plate 10 having at its upper edge an ear or lug 15 fitting in the recess 13. The plate let is mounted in operative relation to the plate 10 by means of the side plates 16 and 17 which are secured to the plate 14 by fastenings 18 such as rivets or the like, the said plates 16 and 17 extending upwardly, one on each side of the plate 10, and the said plates 16 and 17 are mounted to oscillate on a pivot 19 extending through the aperture 12 in the plate 10. By reason of the connection just described, the beam 7 may be moved rearwardly without moving the standard rearwardly, it being understood that the standard will oscillate on the pivot 19 presenting the plow share 20 above the surface of the soil being plowed.
The plates 16 and 17 are braced by a bolt 21 extending through them near the upper rear corners of the said plates.
As shown in the drawing, the plow share 20 is of a construction which will permit plow point to be applied to its forward end 22, but as the manner of applying the point is not a part of the present invention, but forms the subject of the disclosure in a companion application, it will not be described in detail. The plow share, however, has a vertical slot or opening in which the lower end of the plate 14 is secured by fastenings 23 such as rivets, and the slot also forms a clearance for the reception of the lower end of a sod cutter 24; comprising a strip of metal having a forward beveled edge, the upper end of the said cutter lying in a space between the plates 16 and 17 and being seplate adapted to be attached to a plow beam and depend therefrom, a standard plate thereunder, plates secured at each side of the standard plate and pivotally connected to the depending plate, means for effecting an interengaging contact between the standard plate and the first mentioned plate, and aplow share carried by the standard.
2. In a subsoiler attachment for plows, a plate adapted to be secured to a beam and to depend therefrom, the said plate having a recess in its lower edge, a standard plate adapted to engage the under edge of the first mentioned plate and having a projection extending into the recess of the said plate, plates secured at the sides of the standard plate and embracing the side of the first mentioned plate, means for pivotally connecting the side plates to the first mentioned plate at the front edge of the said plate, a plow share connected to the standard plate; and a cutter having its lower end connected to'the share and its upper end secured between the plates attached to the standard plate. o
3. In a subsoiler attachment for plows, a plate secured to a beam and depending therefrom, said plate having a recess in its lower edge, a plate on each side of the first mentioned plate, means for pivotally connecting the said plates to the first mentioned plate near the lower forward corner of the first mentioned plate, a standard plate to which the second mentioned plates are secured whereby the standard plate is hingedly mounted with respect to the first mentioned plate, a projection on the standard plate extending into the recess of the first mentioned plate, and a plow share carried by the standard plate.
L. In a subsoiler attachment for plows, a plate secured to a beam and, depending therefrom, said plate having a recess in its lower edge, a plate on each side of the first mentioned plate, means for pivotally connecting the said plates to the first mentioned plate near the lower forward corner of the first mentioned plate, a standard plate to which the second mentioned plates are secured whereby the standard plate is hingedly mounted with respect to the first mentioned plate, a projection on the standard plate extending into the recess of the first mentioned plate, a plow share carried by the standard plate, and a cutter connected to the plow share and having its upper end lying between the pair of plates and secured thereto.
