Description

6. R0 BERTS.
Latchas for Gafes and otherPur poses,
Patented Feb. 25,1873.
Q my AM. Moro-UTHDGRAPHIC co. N)((0ssanfls.'9 mums) CLARK nonnn'rs, or WINCHESTER, ILLINOIS.
EMPRGVEMENT IN LATCHES FOR GATE$ AND OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,183, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CLARK ROBERTS, of Winchester, in the county of Scott and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate-Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gate provided with my improved latch or fastening.
Fi 2 and 3 are detail views, on an enlarged scale, of my improved latch.
The same letters of reference are employed in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.
This invention'consists of certain improvements on the gate-latch patented by me February 5, 1867--namely, in fol-min g an aperture in the laterally-projectingportion of the latch, through which one arm of the thumb-piece or lever may pass to the arm of the latch, and oscillate the latter in unlocking the gate.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improvements, I will now proceedto describe, specifically, their construction and operation.
The gravitating-latch is an angular piece of metal, which is suspended from a suitable pivot upon the post or ja-Inb of the gate or door by its vertical member A. Its member B projects at an angle of one hundred and thirtyfive degrees, or thereabout, and has the form of an isosceles triangle, the base of c limited in its oscillation by asegmental bar or guide, 0, merging with its ends in the side bars (I and d of a triangular frame, D. From the apex of the triangular member B of the latch extends an arm, B, obliquely to and hooks the formation of the latch, and it has near its upper termination a tubular projecting'stud or nipple, d which serves as the pivot upon which the latch oscillates. This nipple extends so far into the eye of the latch that the head of the screw E, while confining the latch against withdrawal from its pivot, will not bear against the latch, but against the end of the nipple, thus allowing the latch to vibrate freely. The thumb-piece or disengaging-lever F maybe attached to the gate or door in the manner indicated in Fig. 1, but I prefer to attach it also to the post or jamb; and in order that. thus disposed, it may properly operate upon the latch, I form-an aperture, b, in the member B of the latter, through which one arm of the thumb-piece passes, to rest against one side or the other, according as the latch is employed with aright-handed or lefthanded gate or door, of the arm B. .Ihe thumb-piece is pivoted in manner like the latch, and it also is so constructedthat it may, together with the latch, be used in con; nection with both right handed and lefthanded gates and doors.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the gravitating-latch and the thumbpiece, the former being constructed with an aperture, b, and arm B underneath it, and one arm of the latter passing through said aperture to operate upon arm B, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I *laim the improvement herein described I have hereunto subscribed my name this 25th day of November, 1872.
