HERBERT BROOKS, 0F YEOVIL, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO PETTERS LIMITED, 0! YEO'Vm ENGLAND.
MEANS FOR CONTROLLING THE SUPPLY OF LIQUID FUEL TO INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
Application filed November 22, 1918. Serial No. 283,748.
7 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT Bnoons, of lVhitleigh, St. Michaels Avenue, Yeovil, in the county of Somerset England, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Controlling the Supply of Liquid Fuel to Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines using two kinds of fuel oil either alternatively or simultaneously, one being highly inflammable and the other less inflammable.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved means for delivering and controlling the supply.
In my method of arriving at the desired result I provide a fuel pump of the plunger type to which are fitted two independent suction valves, whereby the fuel is admitted to the pump from different sources. Between the suction valves and the fuel supply tanks I arrange suitable regulating valves so that the proportion of the fuels can be varied as desired.
Thus on the outward stroke of the fuel pump plunger, the highly inflammable oil is admitted into the said pump through one of the suction valves and the less inflammable oil through the other suction valve, the proportion of the two fuels admitted being controlled as desired by the regulating valves. The mixed charge taken in by the pump is then delivered to the injection nozzle through a common delivery pipe. By this means I am enabled to grade the quality of the fuel oil delivered to the engine. If it is not sufficiently inflammable I may add to it a small proportion of a more inflammable oil so as to cause complete combustion. If on the other hand it is highly inflammable causing the combustion temperature to be too high, I may add to it a small proportion of a less inflammable oil.
A further advantage resulting from the reduction of the combustion temperature is that preignition is avoided and the power of the engine thereby increased.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a fuel pump fitted with my device together with the regulating valves t whereby the two kinds or either of the fuels can be taken in 011 the suction stroke of the pump. By
closing one of the regulating valves the pump takes fuel from one source only through the suction valve which retains its free passage. By opening both the regulatmg valves the pump takes its supply from two sources, the proportion of each kind of fuel being controlled by the amount of openmg glven to the regulating valves.
a is a pump mounted on a casting b, the pump being provided with a spring pressed plunger 0. On the plunger is a collar d and between the collar 03 and the pump is a spring eadapted to withdraw the plunger from the pump. On the casting b is pivoted a lever 7 adapted to bear on the collar (l. The lever is provided with a handle 9 adapted to bear against a stop h. On the casting b is a gudgeon pin j, on which is mounted a rocking lever 70 carrying a roller m, adapted to strike the plunger 0. s s are the suction pipes leading from the sources of supply. 0 isthe delivery pipe leading to the injection nozzle. The purpose of the'handle g is to put the pump out of action by moving the plunger 0 away from the roller m.
The rocking lever 70 is adapted to be reciprocated by a connecting rod 1'. In operation on the reciprocation of the eccentric rod 1" the lever 70 strikes the plunger 0, causing the pump to deliver fuel into the combustion chamber through the nozzle 19. After the injection stroke the pump plunger is returned to its original position by the spring 6, whereby fuel is admitted to the pump from either or both sources of supply ready for the next injection stroke. The two fuels can enter the fuel pump box through one inlet w or separate inlets may be provided, say one at the bottom for one kind of fuel, and another at the side or end for the other fuel. By keeping one inlet a little higher than the other it is possible to arrange for one kind of oil to go to the nozzle in advance of the other kind; but in all cases the fuel is delivered to the engine by the pipe 0 to the nozzle 7).
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with an internal combustion engine utilizing two different kinds of liquid fuel, means for delivering and controlling a mixture of said liquid fuels to the engine cylinder comprising in combination a liquid fuel plunger pump, a liquid fuel injection device for the engine cylinder, a discharge duct from the pump to said injection device, two independent suction pipes connected to the pump casing, one for each kind of liquid fuel for feeding the fuels for said mixture to said pump, and a manually controlled valve in each suction pipe for varying'the proportions of the two different kinds of liquid fuel concomitantly admitted to the pump, and thereby comprising means for regulating the mixture.
2. In combination with an internal combustion engine, means for delivering and controlling the supply thereto of two different kinds of liquid fuel, comprising a fuel injection pump fitted with two independent suction valves, so that on the suction stroke of the pump, one valve admits the less inflammable fuel and the other valve the more highly inflammable fuel into the said pump, a common discharge pipe leading from the )ump to the injection nozzle of the engine cylinder, and means for varying at will the proportion of the two different kinds of fuel admitted to the pump through the respective suction valves.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
