cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Friction Draft- Riggings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in friction draft riggings.
The object of the invention is to provide 5 a high capacity combined spring and friction draft rigging and one wherein the springs are located outside of the sills so that the usual space allotted within the sills may be utilized for the friction elements.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is atop plan view of a portion of a railway draft rigging showing my improvements in connection there with. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of one of the friction end ing springs E-E on the outer sides of the sills;- outer spring followers FF; inner followers G-G; upper and lower sets of plates H and I; and front and rear upper and lower sets of fixed plates or stops J J.

The keys D are held against accidental lateral displacement by any suitable means such as the cotters 15. The arrangement of wedges A and B and keys D is such that the front wedge A may move inwardly from normal position but not outwardly with respect to the front key D and the rear wedge B may move forwardly from normal position but not rearwardly, with respect to the rear key D. g Y
The laterally movable friction shoes G are in the form of cast blocks each having oppositely beveled end friction faces 16-16 adapted to cooperate with the faces of the wedges A and B. I On their outer sides, each shoe C is provided also with a longitudinally extending flat friction surface 17 the latter cooperating with the inner faces of the followers G. k
Each of the followers G is preferably in the form of a relatively short section of channel and the same is .also true of the spring followers FF. Each follower G is connected with the follower F more remote therefrom by means of either the plates or the plates I. The plates I are two in number and are comparatively wide, the same straddling the draft sills 10 and riveted at their ends to the flan es of the followers F and G. Theplates are four in number arranged in upper and lower pairs and also in front and rear sets, the
plates H being riveted to the flanges of the corresponding followers F and G. As will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 2,
the plates 1 are slidingly mounted between the plates H or telescoped' with respect thereto. Theplates H are in turn slidingly mounted between the fixed plates'J which are riveted to the draft sills. With this constructiomit is evident that the followers F and G and the plates H and I are restricted to movement at right angles'to or transversely of the draft sills.
The springs E are preferably four in numher, two on each side of the draft sills.

1. .In a railwa frictiondraft rigging, the combination wit draft sills; of friction deviceslocated between the sills and including ,longitudinally and laterally movable elements; springs disposedoutsideof the sills; and. means,. restricted to movement transversely ofthe. sills, for transferring the movement ofisaidlaterally movable friction elementsto theouter ends of said springs to thereby compress the latter by rected inwardly toward the sills.

ments; springs disposed outside of the sills; and means, restricted .to .movement .transversely of the. sills, for transferring the movement of said laterally movable friction elements to the onter ends of said springs to thereby compress the latter by forces directed inwardly toward the sills, said means including upper and lower sets of plates slidingly telescoped andextending from between the sills to points outside thereof.
. 3. .In a'railway friction draft rigging, the :combination with draft sills; of laterally eX- tending springs located outside of the sills and held against movement lengthwise of the sills; frlction devices located within the sins; spring followers at the outer ends of the springs;,oppositely and laterally movable means interposed between said followers and the friction. devices whereby action ofthe latter is communicated to the-springs and means preventing longitudinal movement ofisaid laterally movable'means.

combination with-draft sills; of laterally ar ranged. springs disposed on the outer sides ofthe sills; spring followers disposed, at the outerends of said springs; friction devices located between the" sills; followers disposed on opposite sides of the frictiondevices and located between the sills; and telescoping sets of upper ,andlower plates,-each}set connecting one ofsaidfollowers between the sills with the moreremote spring follower outside offlthe sills.
6. Inarailwayfriction draft rigging, the
combination withdraft sills; of laterally arranged springs disposed on the outer-sides of the sills; spring followers disposedat the outer ends-,of said springs; friction devices located between the sills followers disposed on opposite sides of the frictiondevices and located; between the sills; telescoping sets of upper and lower plates, each set connecting,
one of,said followers between thesills with the more. remote spring follower outside ofv the sills, said plates straddling the sills; and
prevent longitudinal movement thereof.
7. In a railway friction draft rigging, the combination. with draft. sills, a drawbar, and yoke-acting means vof friction devices disposed,bet ween the sills and including front and rear relatively longitudinally movable wedges and laterally movable friction elements; stop-acting :means cooperable with said friction devices; laterally arranged springs onthev outerssides of the sills; spring followersat the outerends of the springs; a
