T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS T. Soor'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Furnace- Tapping Machines; and I do hereby declare jib crane now used in connection with furnaces and which will open and close the tap hole of said furnace.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a carriage carrying a tool actuating device and which may be moved toward and from the furnace as desired.
A further object of this invention is the provision of means whereby the tool operating device may be raised and lowered so that the same may be positioned to open and clean the tap hole and then elevate it to permit the molten metal to flow freely from the furnace. I
A further object of this invention is the provision of a furnace tapping machine of the above stated character, which will be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at acomparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. w I
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a sectional View, illustrating a furnace tapping machine constructed in accordancewith my invention,

' Referring in detail to the drawings, th numeral 1 indicates a furnace that-has the usual tap hole 2 for permitting molten metal to be discharged from said furnace when open and said tap hole is adapted to be closed with the usual filling material. The foregoing description relates to a furnace of an ordinary type and with which my in vention is associated.
A supporting beam 3 extends along the furnace adjacent its upper end and is supported in any desired manner and has suspended therefrom a turn table 4: to which is connected supporting arms 5. The supporting arms 5 are attached to a track 6 including rack rails 7 to support a carriage 8. The carriage 8 consists of a rectangular frame 9 in which are journaled axles 10 having secured to their ends pinions 11 which mesh with the rack rails 7. The axles 10 have mounted thereon gears 12 connected by an endless chain 18 and said chain also has in engagement therewith a driving pinion 14; secured to the armature shaft of an electric motor 15 of a well known reversible type. The electric motor 15 being of the reversible type permits the carriage 8 to be moved towardand from the furnace.
The carriage 8 has secured thereto a plat form 16 provided with an opening toslidably receive a rack bar 17 which depends downwardly from the carriage and carries at its lower end a tool operating means 18. Guiderollers 19 are journaled to the platform 16 and engage the rack bar-17 and one of said guide rollers has a series of teeth formed thereon adapted to mesh with the teeth of the rack bar 17 and forms a gear 20. rack bar and is secured to the armature shaft of'an electric motor 21 carried by the carriage 8 and which is of the ordinary reversible type, therefore it' will be seen that A driving gear 20 is in mesh with the the motor 21 is capable of raising and lowering the rack bar 17 and the tool actuating means 18 for the purpose of moving said tool actuating means into and out of alinement with the tap hole 2 of the furnace. The gear 20 has formed thereon a ratchet 22 which is adapted to, be engaged by a pivoted and spring actuated dog 24 having secured to one end a cable or flexible-element, 25 so that said dog may be moved out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet 22 I permitting the tool actuating means 18 to be lowered by setting the motor:21 in, operation in one direction or if the tool actuating means is of sufficient weight the same will move down by gravity. It is also to be noted that the teeth are so arranged on the ratchet gear 22 that the rack bar is free to be moved upwardly on rotation of the motor 21 in. one, direction but will be prevented from moving downwardly by the dog 24.
Y The tool operating means 18 consist of a housing 25 which has journaledtherein a tool operating shaft 26 that has connection with an electric motor 27 secured to said housing while the other end of said shaft 26 is provided with the usual chuck 28 to receive ordinary tapping tools employed for removingthe material from the tap hole 2 of the furnace. The housing 25 in rear of the chuck 28 is provided with an outlet opening 29 and an inclined deflecting partition 30 is located'in the housing to cause the material forced into the housing from the tap hole by a boring operation to pass outwardly of the said housing by the outlet opening 29.
The tool actuating means 18 is lowered until it is in alinement with the tap hole and a drill or boring tool is secured in the chuck and the carriage 8 is moved forwardly on the track 6 by themotor 15 until the tool is within the tap hole and the motor 27 is set in operation to render a rotating or boring action to the drill or auger which will remove a portion of the material from the tap hole which is of a soft nature. The material within the tap hole at the outer portion of said hole is rather soft, while said material at the inner end of the hole be comes extremely hard from excessive heat of the furnace. After the soft material has been removed from the tap hole, a drill is placed within the chuck and the carriage 8 is racked back and forward on the track 6 to cause a drilling action on the-hard material within the inner end of the tap hole, so that said hard material will be driveninto the furnace permitting themolten metal therein. to escape through the tap hole. When thetaphole has been opened, the motor 15 is reversed moving the tool actuating means-18 rearwardly and the motor 21 is Q then set in operation to elevate said tool outwardly of said opening. 7

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is I 1. A device of the character set forth comprising a supportingbeam, a turn table suspended from the supporting beam,a track carried by the turntable, a carriage mounted on said track, means for, reciprocating'said carriage, a rack bar carried by said carriage, means for raising and lowering the rack bar, and a tool actuating means carried by said rack bar. i

A device of' the character-set forth comprising-a supporting beam arranged" adjacent a furnace, a turn table movably suspended from said supporting beam,'a track carried by said turn table, a carriage mounted on said traok,xmeans for reciprocating said carriage, a rack bar slidably mounted on said carriage and depending downwardly therefrom, means for raising and lowering the rack bar, anda tool actuating means carried by the lower end of the rack bar;

A device of-the character set forth comprising a supporting beam, a turn table connected to the supportingbeam, atrack carried by the turn table, a carriage reciprocally mounted on said track, a rack bar slidably mounted in said carriage, means for raising and lowering the rack bar and car'- r1ed by the carriage, ahouslng secured to the lower end of the rack bar, a motor car'- -ried by said housing, a shaft; journaled in said housing and connected to the motor and adapted to have tools connected thereto, said housing having an outletopening therein, and a deflecting blade within. said housing and adapted to cause materialto pass 4. A device of the character set forth comprising a supporting beam, a turntable earned by said supporting beam, a track carried by said turn table, acarriagerecipcomprising a supporting beam, a turn table carried by the supporting beam, rack rails carried by the turn table, a carriage mounted on the rack rails, a reversible electric motor for driving the carriage in either direction, a rack bar slidably connected to the carriage, a motor for raising and lowering the rack bar and carried by the carriage, means for locking the rack bar in adjusted positions, and a tool actuating means carried by 10 the rack bar.
