DETACHABLE-PIN MOUNTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
Application filed March 23, 1920. Serial No. 368,045.
To all w/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST A. BULTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orangeburg, in the county of Orangeburg and State of South Carolina, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Detachable-Pin Mountings, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to a pin mounting for jewelry, and Vmore particularly to the class of detachable pins for jewelry, lsuch as bar pins, breast pins or other ornamental articles of the pin fastening type.
rlhe primary object of the invention is the provision of a pin mounting of this character, wherein the pin shank is detachably engaged in a mounting therefor, so that the shank will be held fast yet the same can be removed from the mounting only by the use of jewelers pliers or other 'like tools, the pin shank being positively engaged in the mounting and when so engaged will be latched therein or held fast to avoid the accidental .separation of the shank of the pin from the mounting, yet when necessity requires, the shank of the pin can be readily detached from the mounting for the substitution of a new pin, should the old pin become damaged, broken or unfit for further use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pin mounting of this character, which is novel in form so as to permit the shank of the pin to be detached when the occasion requires, from the mounting and when engaged therein will be secured for the fastening lof the jewelry to wearing apparel in the usual wellknown manner. Y
A further object of the invention is the provision of a mounting of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient for the detachable fastening of a pin to an article of jewelry, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture. Y
With these andV other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing: Y
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bar pin, showing the pin mounting for the detachable pin proper constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view through the' pin mounting showing the pin proper engaged therein. Y
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the pin proper showing in detail the end portion for detachable engagement in the mounting.
Fig. 4:, is a perspective view of the mounting with the pin proper removed and said mounting detached from the bar pin.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally an article of jewelry, preferably in the form of a bar pin, 5 being the ornamental bar thereof, 6, the keeper for removably receiving the pointed end 7, of a swinging fastening pin proper 8, which is Vdetachably carried in a pivotal mounting hereinafter fully described.
The keeper 6 is carried on the rear face of the bar 5 and integral therewith or fastened thereto in any suitable manner, adjacent to one end of said bar 5, while adjacent to the opposite end of the latter, and integral therewith or fastened thereto in any suitable manner on its rear face, is a pivot bearing 9 in which is ivoted the mounting for the pin proper 8, t is mounting comprising, preferably a tubular or cylindrical sleeve l0, having formed integral therewith a pivot ear 11, which is swingingly engaged in the bearing 9 through the medium of the pivot 12, the ear 11, being preferably of the shape shown, although the same may be otherwise shaped, if found desirable.
Interiorly of the sleeve 10 at the outer end thereof, is formed an annular locking shoulder 13,`while the pin proper 8 is furcated for a distance thereof longitudinally of the end adapted for detachable engagement in the mounting to provide a slot 14, forming opposed resilient semi-circular shaped locking jaws 15, at the engaging end portion of .the pin proper 8 with the sleeve 10V of the mounting. These jaws 15 are insertible in the sleeve 10` of the mounting and have formed adjacent to their outer' ends circumferential locking channels or grooves 16 of a'size corresponding to the shoulder 13 interiorly of the sleeve 10 for detachably receiving said shoulder when the jaws 15 have been completely inserted in said sleeve 10 for the detachable fastening of the pin proper 8 in said sleeve 10 of the mounting.
he disposition of the groove 16 in the jaws 15 when the pin 8 is inserted in the sleeve 10, permits the outer free ends of the jaws 15 to slightly protrude beyond the outer end of said sleeve 10 when vthe internal shoulder 13 is engaged in the grooves. 16 in said jaws so that these protruding outer ends of the latter can be gripped by jewelers pliers or other like tool for compressingthe jaws 15 to disengage the same from locked relation within the sleeve 10 and thus allowing the pin proper 8 to be removed from the sleeve 10 of the mounting.
On fastening the pin proper 8 in the sleeve 10 of the mounting by inserting the jaws 15 of said pin therein when the pin is moved by pushing thereon in one-direction the said jaws 15, by reason of the resiliency thereof will snap into locking engagement `with the sleeve 10 by having the shoulder 13 in the sleeve ride over the free ends of the jaws 15 into the grooves 16 therein and thus securely fasten the pin proper 8 in the sleeve 10 yet permitting the detachment of the pin 8 from the mounting when the occasion requires, by the use of jewelers pliers or other like tool.
When the pin 8 has been secured in the mounting and it is desired to detach the same the jewelers pliers. or other like tool are engaged with the outer free ends of the jaws 15 and compresssed thus releasing the internal shoulder 13 of the sleeve from the grooves 16 in said jaws and on pulling upon the pin 8 in one direction, it can be readily removed from the sleeve 10 of the mounting.
FromV the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the mounting for detachably holding the pin 8 of the article of jewelry A will be clearly understood and therefore a more eX- tended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. In a mounting of the character described, a pin having a longitudinally split portion forming resilient snapping jaws, a pivot ear having a sleeve detachably receiving the jaws of the pin, and means interiorly of the sleeve and positively engaged by the 'aws of the pin when inserted in the sleeve for the detachable fastening of the pin therein.
2. A detachable pin mounting comprising a pivot ear, a sleeve on said ear and having an internal shoulder and a pin longitudinally slitted for a distance to form opposed resilient jaws for removable insertion in the sleeve, said jaws being formed with seats for receiving the internal shoulder in the sleeve for detachably fastening the pin engaged therein.
3. A detachable pin mounting comprising a pivot ear, a sleeve on said ear and having an internal shoulder and a pin longitudinally slitted for a distance to form opposed resilient jaws for removable insertion in the sleeve, said jaws being formed with seats for receiving the internal shoulder in the sleeve for detachablyT fastening the pin engaged therein, the. seats in the jaws for receiving the shoulder being spaced from the free ends of said jaws to slightly expose said ends beyond the sleeve when the pin is detachably fastened therein.
4. The combination of a fastening pin for an article of jewelry, a mounting for said pin comprising a sleeve to detachably receive the pin, said pin being formed with resilient portions having seats, and a keeper portion interiorly of the sleeve for engaging the seats to detachably fasten' the pin in the sleeve.
5. The combination of a fastening pin for an article of jewelry, a mounting for said pin comprising a sleeve to detachably receive the pin, said pin being formed with resilient portions having seats., and a keeper portion internally of the sleeve for engag-V ing the seats to detachably fasten the pin in the sleeve, said seats in the resilient portions of the pin being spaced relative to the end of the pin adjacent thereto whereby on the engagement of the pin in the sleeve the said end will be exposed for operating the resilient portions of said pin to effect the detachment thereof from the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
ERNST AUGUST BULTMAN.
