Description

1. LEONARD. TRAP FOR BATHTUBS, 6L0.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22, I920.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920'.
INVENTOR ll TTORNEYS omreo STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. LEONARD, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO A. 'B. SANDS &, SON CO OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TRAP FOR BATHTUBS, &c.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .JAMES H. LEONARD, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at 158 No. Arlington Ave, East Orange, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traps for Bathtubs, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved trap and connection for use with bathtubs, lavatories and other receptacles. The invention has been developed with particular reference to its use with lavatories, etc., on board ship, in which the trap is below the deck which supports the lavatory or other receptacle and must not only be connected therewith by means which permit a tight joint between the receptacle and the trap, but must be so constructed as to permit the hole in the deck through which the connections pass to be closed water-tight, so that there can be no leakage through the deck. The improved fitting, however, is equally adapted for house use, where it is .desirable to prevent the possibility of the passage of water through the floor around the connection. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which-the single figure, partly in vertical section and partly in elevation, shows the improved fitting with the deck or floor and a portion of the receptacle. I
In the construction illustrated there is shown at a a portion of a bathtub or basin or other receptacle, the outlet of which is connected through a horizontal pipe 22 and an elbow c with the vertical outlet pipe 0?. The trap c, which is preferably of the nonsiphoning type, has a sleeve 7", which is long enough to extend upwardly through the deck or floor which supports the receptacle, the contents of which are to be discharged through the trap. As shown, the deck or fioor comprises a steel plate 9 and an overlying concrete or composition body 71, with a top covering 2'. The neck or sleeve 7' for cooperation with such a floor, is screwthreaded for its entire length to receive packing devices by means of which the hole through the deck or floor can be closed tightly against the passage of water. In
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 30, 1920.
1920. Serial N0. 383,522.
the construction shown the steel plate 9 is received between a shoulder e of the trap e and a nut 7:,suitable packing being provided, as at Z, while the upper end of the sleeve receives, above the deck or floor, an other packing nut m with suitable packing a. The vertical outlet pipe d, connected with the receptacle as above described, is extended downward within the sleeve f into the body of the trap e and a packing nut 0 surrounds the outlet pipe and engages the sleeve 7 so as to make a tight joint between the outlet pipe and the upper end of the sleeve. The trap c is provided with the usual outlet p, above the lower end of the outlet pipe cl, and is also provided with the usual clean-out plug 9. 7
It will be seen that by means of the described fitting not only is a tight joint assured between the outlet pipe and the trap, but the passage of water through the deck, around the trap sleeve or neck is effectually prevented.
It will be understood that various changes in details of construction will be made to suit different conditions of use and that the invention is not restricted to the precise construction shown and described herein.
I claim as invention:
1. The combination of a receptacle to be placed above a floor, a trap having a sleeve extended upward therefrom through the floor, external packing devices applied to the sleeve to form a tight joint between the same and the floor, and an outlet pipe connected with the receptacle and with said sleeve, the outlet pipe being extended downward within the trap and the trap having an outlet above the lower end of the outlet pipe.
2. The combination of a receptacle to be placed above a floor, a trap having a sleeve extended upward therefrom through the floor, external packing devices applied to the sleeve to form a tight joint between the same and the floor, an outlet pipe connected with the receptacle and with said sleeve, and a packing device to close the joint between the outlet pipe and the upper end of the sleeve. I
3. The combination of a supporting floor, a receptacle above the same, a trap below the floor and having a sleeve extended upward through the floor, an outlet pipe connected with the receptacle and with the sleeve, and packing devices to close tightly the opening in the floor around the sleeve.
4. The combination of a supporting floor, a receptacle above the same, a trap below the floor and having a sleeve extended upward through the floor, an outlet pipe connected a receptacle above thersame, a trap below the floor and having a sleeve extended upward through the floor, an outlet pipe connected with the receptacle and extended downward through the sleeve within the trap, packing devices cooperating with the sleeve and the floor to close tightly the hole with the receptacle and extended downward'through the floor around the sleeve, and a within the trap, the latter having an outlet above the lower end of said outlet pipe, and packing devices cooperating with the sleeve and the floor to close tightly the hole through the floor around the sleeve.
5. The combination of a supporting floor,
packing device 'to close the joint between the outlet pipe and the sleeve at the upper end of the latter. 7
This specification signed this 18 day of May, A. D. 1920. V
