Description

C. ELEMAN.
muss. APPLICATION FILED APR.2, 1918- Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
- W INVENTOR. W Aifiij UNITED STATES CHARLES ELEMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
muss.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 30, 1920.
Application filed April 2. 1918. Serial No. 226,187.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ELEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to trusses and has particular reference to wooden roof trusses and the like. I
One of the objects of this invention resides in. the provision of wood truss which is low in cost of material and construction; one which can readily be built in the field or site of installation.
Another object of this invention is a wood truss which can be built from a number of light wood members.
WVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and relative position of the parts and members shown in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing in which like reference characters indicate like or corre sponding parts:
- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved truss. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the center system of members indicated also by C in Fig. 2.
Fig. a, is an enlarged detail of the framing at points It and S in the intermediate system of members B looking in direction of -lal in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5, is also an enlarged detail of the framing at points T and U in such intermediate system of members B. In
the drawings, A indicates the outer system of members: The truss is symmetrical about the center line 22.
'Referringto the drawings which disclose a form of truss construction and arrangement embodying my invention, and here shown as comprising five sections or systems of framing or members, I provide a center system C which comprises the two end horizontal abutment members 10 and the angularly'disposed compression members 11, 12, 13, and 14 arranged for end to end abutment with each other and with said abutment members 10.
Within the top chord of the truss and between top abutting ends of said members 11, 12, 13, and 1 1, I provide the members 15 and 16.
Inasmuch as both systems A and B are alike, I shall confine my description to one system of each.
The intermediate system B, comprises in the lower chord the member 17 which extends from one end of the truss to the other or the full lenggth L. The upper chord member of system comprises the four members 18 and 19. One end of member 18 rests upon the lower chord 17 and the other abuts with the member 20. One end of member 19 abuts with the opposite face of member 20 and the other end abuts with the end of its complementary member 19 at the center of the truss. The lower ends of the members 20 are inserted a few inches into the lower chord members 17. A tie rod 21 extends from the bottom .to the top of the lower and upper chords and is placed between the faces of the systems A and B. I
The outer system A, comprises in the lower chord, the member 22 which extends from one end of the truss to the other, or the full length L. The upper chord comprises members 23 and 2 1 arranged with abutting. ends and running parallel with the intermediate similar members 18 and 19. Suitable bolts 25 and nails are provided for securing the members of the various systems together. Bent steel straps 26 extend from the face of one system A across the end of the truss to the face of the other system A.
It is obvious that the members shown and described may be made in any suitable lengths and spliced where desired.
It is thought that the foregoing description and illustrations clearly disclose the construction and operation of the invention, hence a more extended explanation is omitted.
I claim In a truss, and in combination, a pair of built-up sections having upper and lower chords and members in tension only connecting said chords, 5 center section comprising a, plurality of angularly disposed abutting compression members 11, 12, 13 and 14, and horizontal. end abutment members 10 con fining said compression members, and members 15 and 16 extending betweenthe upper ends of said compression members substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES 'ELEMAN.
