To all whom it may 0012 rem Be it known that we, HARRY J. SIBLEY and Gnovnn C. Coin, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l arc-Recorders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inxone fare recorders for recording it'arcs according to the zone or distance traveled, and Inore'paticularly the invention relates to means whereby the printing mechanism and the recording or counter actuating mechanism cannot be operated at the same time, thus insuring a clear and accurate statement of fare collections and other data at all times. The present improvements are applied to a type of registering and recording machine such as is shown and described in Letters Patent No. 1,316,176, granted to John F. Ohmer, Sep tcmher 16, 1919, and comprise a locking device constructed and arranged so that the printing mechanism cannot be operated after the counter actuating mechanism has been started, and vice versa; the counter actuating mechanism cannot be operated when the printing mechanism is in any other than its home or normal position, all as will hereinafter he more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings. Referring in general terms to the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a recording counter and printing mechanism to which the present improvements are applied, the upper portion of the mechanism such as the indicating devices etc. being omitted. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the recording counter actuating member with which is also shown the present locking device, Fig. 3 is a top view of the lever which forms an ele ment oi? the present improvements. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the locking lever, and Fig. 5 is a view of the combined, unlocking and printing key.
In a more detailed or particular descriplion oi: the present improvements, similar re tercnce characters denote corresponding parts of the mechanism as illustrated in the said drawings.
Owing to the recording counter and the printing devices which cooperate therewith being fully disclosed in the prior patent to which reference has been made, it has been deemed unnecessary to illustrate more than mounted. The said cam shaft actuates the printing bar or platen -3 when the said I shaft is rotated and thereby caused to engage the said plate-n and elevate it. One of the side plates 1- is shown in the drawings, the other being similar to it at the other side of the machine. On one end of the said shaft 2 a disk 4t is fixed which con stitutes a feature of the printing device not involved in the present improvements. Also a one tooth gear 5* which is an element of the paper feeding device and constitutes no part of the present improvements, and a collar 6 which is a part of said one tooth gear and an element somewhat involved with the present improvements. The collar 6 has a recess -7 in the edge thereof in which a part of the unlocking and printing key -8 is insertible through an opening in a side of the machine casing; the lug -9-- on said key enters the said recess -7- so that when the key is turned the cam shaft 2 will elevate the platen 3 and press the paper upon which the record is to be made, against the recording wheels or counter, all of which are well known and require no extended description. Until the key 8 is inserted the plunger head --10- lies in the recess in the said collar -6- and locks the cam shaft from rotation. Upon the insertion of the said key the tapered part of the lug 9 engages the head 1() and moves it out of the recess 7. The head 10 has an extended stem --llwhich is surrounded by a spring -12-- whichnormally maintains the head 10- in said recess until the key is inserted. The stem and the spring referred to are mounted in a guide or housing 13 which is supported on the side plate -l-. The end of the stem 11-- projects through the outer end of the housing and the projected end has fixed to it a head --l.-i. The head -14. engages the lower endo'l an upright [lever -15-- when the said stem is moved out by the insertion of the key. The lever 15- is of special construction and constitutes the main element of the present lockin device. It is pivoted at -l6-- to the e of the frame. The position in which the said lever is shown in Fig. l locks the counter actuating mechanism against operation after the key S is inserted. It is important in machines of this character that neither mechanism to wit, the printing niechanism or the recordeitmechm nism he interfered with during the performance oi. their respective 'lunctions, by an attempt to ope'ate oth concurrently. In the rilrawings and the description in connection therei'ith a simple and e'll'ective means is shown for ac:omplishiin;- this ject. e do not. however, wish to be limited to the particular means thus shown and described for it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that some changes a modifications may be made therein to bring about the same result without departing: from the spirit oi the iivent'ion as claimed.
