UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. A
FREDERICK STANLEY LONG, OF WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA.
CARD-INDEX HOLDER.
Application filed July 1,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK STANLEY Lone, a subject of the King of Great Britam, and resident of the city of lVinnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cardlndez'; Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements ininde): card holders of the type designed to maintain a plurality of cards in stepped relation, whether in a cabinet or not, and the objects of the inventionare to provide simple means for holding the cards in posi-- in the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a cabinet divided into two compartments 10 and 11 by a partition 12. The compartment 10 is designed to contain any convenient card index arranged with suitable dividing cards. The compartment 11 contains a card simportingz element B which may be used separatelyfrom the cabinet as a card holder indicated in Fig. 2.
The card supporting element or rack B is of inverted U-shape, and may conveniently be formed of sheet metal formed on the top with a plurality of parallel slots 13 which meet inclined parallel slots 14: in the sides, the slots 14 being gradually increased in depth from one side to the other of the rack. whereby when the cards are placed in the slots they will be held in inclined stepped relation.
It will be observed that the slots 14; being inclined in normal position will hold the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. so, 1920.

cards in sucha position that they are readily visible and will have their edges presented in a more convenient position for sortlng.
D represents the forward cover hinged to the side 15 and designed to swing downwardly to form a tray which may contain a scratch pad or the like indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
W hen closed this portion of the cover will cover the eompartment'lO, while the compartment 11 will be covered by a cover E hinged to the rear part of the cabinet. 7 The dimensions of the supporting member 13 are such that it will fit conveniently into the compartment 11 as shown. The cards are only designed to be held in the rack temporarily but it will be seen that by rea son of their stepped and inclined relation the .outer portion of each card will be in view, and the various appointments, etc., will be quickly observer.
It will be observed that the slots 14 and 13 cause the outer part of the member B to be divided into a plurality of spaced fingrers 16 which support the cards between them-in spaced, stepped and inclined relation. A
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scopeof the clann, con structed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specificar tion and drawings, shall be interpreted as.
illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is: A card index cabinet formed with a front and rear compartment, a card supporting element or rack of inverted U-shape in the rear compartment, the rack having inclined slots forming spaced fingers between which i the cards are adapted to lie in stepped,
spaced and inclined relation.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK STANLEY LONG. Witnesses:
