To all whom it may convent.-
Be it known that I, JOHAN O. DELIiN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Gottenborg, in the Province of Gottenborg and Kingdom of Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to gas igniting devices and has for an object to provide a gas lighter which can be, cheaply manufactured and which when operated will create a spark to ignite a quantity of imity thereto.
The invention comprehends among other features the provision of a gas lighter which is preferably adapted for use with an electric current and is normally inoperative but when actuated will close a circuit to produce a spark which will ignite gas issuing from a burner or jet when the lighter is held close to the orifice from which the gas issues. a
The invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with the lighting of the burners of gas stoves and the like, although it will be understood that the same can be {used in connection with gas lighting fixtures. a

I provide a body 10 preferably formed from a plurality of half sections 11 which may be molded of porcelain or some other suitable insulating material and which are connected by a suitable cross screw. or bolt 12. The inner ends of the half sections 11, are formed with peripheral grooves 13, which when the two half sections are connected, provide a continuous spiral, these inner portions of the sections as wellas the main portion, each having an inner longitudlnal gas in close proxgroove which when the sections are connected together, provide a longitudinal bore 14, with the upperend of each half section having a reduced portion 15, which when the sections are united, provides a slot 16. One of the sections 11 has a cut away or recessed portion 17 and a transverse groove 18 and mounted to swing in the cut away portion is a triangularly shaped piece, 19 in the nature of a flat plate which has one of its corners or ends pivoted to an operating button or member 20 mounted to slide in the groove 18 and normally projecting beyond the face of the body, a primary electrode 21 being pivoted to another end or corner of the triangular piece or plate 19 and arranged to slide in the bore 14 of the body. The half sections 11 are recessed in the bore 14 to provide for the seating of a spring 22 which encircles the primary electrode 21 and abuts against'a plate 23 on the electrode, with the other end of the spring abutting against a contact plate 29 so that the electrode will tend normally to be held in initial non-operating position. Suitably secured in the upper ends of the half sections 11, to'lie in the slot 16 isa secondary electrode 24 which may consist of a'soft iron core or the like. An electric plug 25 for use in connection with an electric circuit, has a wire 26 thereof passing through the bore 14 and then through an auxiliary groove 26"in the body 12 to the secondary electrode 24 and another wire 27 connected with the plug'25 passed into the inner end of the bore 14 and then extending transversely through a passage 27 to the periphery of the body, after which the wire is wound around the inner end of the body in the rooves 13 and is then returned to the interlor of the body to a passage 28 through formed of some insulating material such as hard rubber and the like.
a In the use of the device described we will assume that the plug 25 is connected to an electric circuit and that it is desired to ignite a quantity of gas issuing for instance fromthe gas burner. The device is grasped by the handle formed by the cover and is held adjacent the burner so that the gas issuing therefrom will be received in the slot 16 and now when pressure is exerted upon the member 20, it will be seen that the primary electrode 21 will be advanced against the action of the sprin 22, bringing the upper or free end of t e electrode into contact with the secondary electrode 24. This contact will cause a spark at the points of engagement of the primary electrode with the secondary electrode which will ignite the gas and of course when the pressure on the button oroperating member 20 is released, the spring 22 will return the primaryelectrode to its initial position. breaking the circuit-which had been completed through the electrode and whereby the spark was produced.
By having the electric wire 27 wound around a portion of the body to form a coil as at 27, it will be apparent that a resistance to the electric current is provided and the provision of the coil will facilitate the production of a hot spark at the time when the two electrodes come in contact. thus insuring a suliicient electric contact and spark to ignite the gas with but a small amount of electric current necessary to accomplish the result.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device described is of a simple construction: cannot readily get out of orier and by reason or the simplicity of the carts can be readily assembled and easily merated.
Having described my invention. I claim- .k gas igniting device comprising a body aaving a tubular portion terminating in an open slot at one end. a spring engaged primary electrode mounted in the bore and normally held in a retracted position, a secondary electrode in the body and disposed to extend into the slot therein. an operating member mounted to slide in the body and iormally havmg an end projecting therefrom and a connecting link member for the orimary electrode and operating member ind mounted to swing in the said body.
