Be it known that I, THEODORE SMoLINsKY, a citizen of the Republic of Austria, and a resident of Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inToy Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toy hammers, and has for its primary object the provision of novel means for operating the head of a hammer with relation to affixed anvil. A further object lies in they provision of an improved form of crank for operation of the hammer, said crank being exceedingly simple in form and cheap to manufacture. I Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which form a part of thisspecification and illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The main frame of my invention comprises right and left spaced uprights 10 and 11 respectively, joined at their tops by a bar 12 and at a point intermediate their ends by a horizontal beam 13. In the lower angle formed by upright 10 and beam 13 is secureda guide block 1i, and a similar guide block 15 is oppositely positioned in the lower angle formed between beam 13 and upright 11.
The opposed edges of the guide blocks are vertically channeled as at 16 to receive guide pins 17 which project outwardly in opposite directions from the sides of a vertical movable hammer head 18 adapted to operate upon an anvil 19 fixedly positioned below it. Projecting upwardly from the center of hammer head 18 is a hammer shaft 21 fixed within the hammer head and by means of which the latter is operated. Vertically I alined apertures formed centrally. in the bar 12 and the beam 13 form the bearing guides for the shaft '21.
Between bar 12 andbeam 13 the shaft 21 is provided with a transverse horizontal pin 22 or any similar element which will present a downwardly exposed shoulder rigid with relation to the shaft and accessible to the upward impulse of an operatlng crank.

In the operation of the invention, and considering the parts as in the lower dotted line position of Fig. 2, wherein the hammer head 18 is at rest upon the anvil 19, the child operating the toy rotates the crank 25 by. means of the operating handle 32. The crank 29 rises beneath pin 22 elevating the latter together with'shaft 21 and hammer head 19 upwardly against the pressure of spring 23 into the full line position of Fig. 2. Before crank 29' has reached the zenith of its upper are it slips out from beneath pin 22 and the pressure of spring 23' augmenting the force of gravlty drives'the hammer head '18, shaft 21 and pin 22 violently and rapidly downward against the anvil 19. The pressure of spring 23 is such that the hammer head 18 strikes the anvil before crank 31 rises to the level of the bot-.

Inherent in my invention is also that extreme simplicity and cheapness of construction which is a desirable feature of every toy. I Wish therefore not'to be restricted to the precise embodiment shown, except in so far as sameis limited in the appended claim.

the shaft of said hammer extending through said beam and the uoer member of said frame and guided therebv. an abutment member projecting laterally from saids haft, a spring interposed between said member and the top member of the frame, angularly disposed brace members secured to said beam and to the upright members of said frame, and a rectangular actuating device pivoted. in said brace members, said device being shaped to provide oppositely disposed actuating portions between said brace members, and an operating handle outside said brace members.
