BLOW-OFF COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. PatgntedNb 23, 1920.
Application filed January 26, 1917. Serial No. 144,609.
T0 aZZ w hom it may concern Be it known that we, lnrnn B. Bino and CHAnLns' A. BIPD, citizens of the United States of America, residing at boroughdof Kings, city, county, and State of New York, and Mount Vernon, county of lvestchcster, State of New York, respectively, have inyented certain new and useful improve,
to provide a movable valvemember which is self-locating or self-positioning. A further object of the invention is to provide a blowoff cockembodying a valve casing which 18 substantially free from obstruction between its interior end and its discharge opening,
a lever for moving the movable member to.
open position'and means for mounting the lever relative to the valve casing and'the valvostem and for enabling the lever to be disconnected from the valve casing and, to rotate the movable valve member forgrinding the same and the valve seat.
More particularly, the preferred form of the invention comprises a valve casing communicating directly with the shell or casing of the boiler, a movable valve membereX- tending through said casing and within the interior of said shell or boiler'casing and provided with a valve seat disposed within said valve casing and immediately proximate to the interior of said shell or boiler casing. Such movable valve member is con-' structed to be automatically closed by the pressure within the shell or boiler casing.
Means are also provided for efi'ecting the opening of the valve against the pressure of. the steam, the said means comprising a lever pivoted on said valve casing and secured to the valve stem passing through said valve casing. 7
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description and accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 shows a preferred embodiment of the invention in side elevation with the lower part of the valve casing and adjacent portion of the boiler casing in central section; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional elcvation of amodification. 7
Referring to Fig. 1, the valve casing-.1 comprises theinlet portion 2, the outlet portion 3 and the intermediate curved POI",- tion a. Said inlet portion 2 may be provided with the threaded portion 5 adapted to be tapped into a suitable opening in a side of the boiler casing 6., The outlet casing portion 3 may be provided-with the;
' threaded portion 7 adapted to be connected to the piping 8, hose or the like,'for directmg the discharge to any desired locat on.
The movable valve member comprises the conical effective ,valve portion 9 providedwith the pacl'nng ring 10 Cl1SpOS6Cl along the conical surface of the same and constructc to form a sealing lit with the valve seat 11 when the valve 9 is in closed position. The
valve. seat 11 is preferablyforined at the immediate point of communication of the valve casing l with the interior of the boiler6.
The stem 12 of the movable valve member extends outwardly through the casing 1 and emerges through the adjustable bushing 13. The means for opening the valve 18 shown as a lever l l pivotally. mounted on the lug 15 12by means of the belt or pin 16 and slot 17. The angular flange" 18 1s-.prov1ded for positioning or removing the valve'casing by meansof a wrench.
The' operation of the aforesaid .blowolf ing. An essential feature of. the valve is the and pivotally connected tosaid valve stem valve will be largely understood from' the x above description together with'the followj' automatic-closing of the samebythe pressure of the steam or other medium within struction affords a superior sealing between the valve and easing by reason of the conical construction of the sealing member's. Such construction avoids the formation of any pockets or projecting surfaces susceptible ofbeing incrusted with scale and similar substances. Upon operation of the-lever 14,
the valve will be .forcedopen and scale, mud
the boiler 6. It will be noted that theconand other foreign material will be effec-.- tively forced by the pressure of the steam' through the valve casing 1 and thereby into the atmosphere or through the discharge piping 8. 1
The aforesaid form of the invention is simple in construction and in assembling or disassembling. It will be noted that in the event of uneven wearing of the valve seat and seating portion of the movable self-locating, and self-positioning, Without the use of any supplemental locating or guiding means.
Even in the event of the valve casing or a portion of the lever or valve operating means being broken or snapped off, as by accident, the movable valve member will be automatically held in position and pre elude leakage of steam.
As materials for the valve parts, phosphor bronze is preferable for the sealing ring on the movable valve member andthe bushing, and steel and semi-steel for the remaining parts.- V
In Fig. 2, the valve member 35is pro-. videdwith the cylindrical peripheral portion 36 disposed in advance of the sealing portion 37, for the purpose of affording particular'means for locating or positioning the movable valve member when moved to closed position.
It will be understood that other changes and modifications may be made without de- -parting from the invention as defined b the appended claims.
We claim. 1. A blow-01f cock for boilers, comprising in combination with the boiler casing, of
a valve casing communicating directly with the interior of the boiler casing, a movable valve member extending into the interior of the boiler casing and constructed to be moved to closing position under pressure of the steam contained within the boiler casing, a stem rigidly connected to the movable valve member freely disposed Within and extending through the exterior end of said valve casing, said valve casing at its end interior of the boiler casing being frusto-conical and said movable valve member being similarly frusto-conical, said valve casing being provided with a discharge opening located between its said exterior end and its said interior end, said valve casing being substantially free from obstruction between its said interior end and its saiddischarge opening, a lever for moving said stem and said movable valve member to open position and means ior mounting said lever relativeto said valve casing and said stem, said mounting means including a pin and slot connection.
2. A blow-off cock for-bollers, comprising in combination with'the boiler casing, of a valve casing communicating directly with the interior of the boller casing, a movable valve member extending into the interiorof the boiler casing and-constructed to be moved to closing position under pressure of the steam contained within the boiler casing, stem rigidly connected to the movable extending through the exterior end of'said valve casing. said valve casing at its end 1nterior of the boiler casing being frusto-conilocated between its said exterior end and its said interior end, said valve caslng belng substantially free from obstruction between its said interior end and its said discharge opening, a lever for moving said stem and said movable valve member to'open position, means for mounting said lever relative to said valve casing and said stem, to provide longitudinal movement of said stem upon rotational movement of said lever, sa d mounting means including a removable bolt.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification this 25th day of January, 1917.
