Be it known that I, LEWIS L. MILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norden, in the county of Keyapaha and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates of the type equipped with an actuating means for opening and closing said gate from points foreign to the gate, and has for one of its objects the Y provision of counter-balancing means adapted to aid in opening and closing the gate and which will cause the gate and the parts associated therewith to work smoothly.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a gate of the above stated character, which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at comparatively low cost.
- With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 illustrate spaced gate posts which are adapted to be embedded in the ground and the post 2 has hinged thereto a gate 3 which frictionally cnigage a suitable catch 4 on the gate post 1 for retaining the gate in a closed position. The. posts 1 and 2 are connected by a beam 5. A base 6 is located adjacent the post 2 and has mounted. thereon s aced posts 7 to which are pivoted levers 8. he levers 8 have pivoted thereto spaced arms 9 between which are journaled weights 10in the form of rollers. The weights 10 are adapted to travel upon inclined tracks 11 which consist of substantially triangular shaped members that are secured to the base 6 and the upper end of the post '7. The inclined portions of the tracks are provided with slots 12 to permit the levers 8 to move upwardly and downwardly on their pivots. The levers 8 have journaled thereto rollers 13 over which pass cables 14. The cables 14 have one of their ends fastened to the upper ends of the post 7 as illustrated at 15 and their other ends connected to the gate 3 at a point intermediate its'ends. A lever 16 is pivotally connected to the top face of the beam 5 and has connected thereto cables 17 that are connected to the free ends of the levers 8. Pairs of cables 18 and 19 are secured to the ends of the lever 16 and pass over pulleys 20 journaled to the beam 5 and extend to points foreign to the gate 3 so that a person approaching the gate from either direction can pull upon the cables for opening and closing the gate. The cables 18 and 19 extend in opposite directions to each other and intercross each other as illustrated in Fig. 2 and which cables are employed for closing the gate from either side thereof. One of the cables 14 after passing over its respective roller 13 passes over a roller 21 journaled to the beam 5 prior to being connected to the gate 3, thus it will be seen that upon pulling on one of the cables, the gate will swing to an open position fully by the influence of the weights 10 which vcights are adapted to move in opposite directions on the inclined tracks 11 and by pulling on the other cables the gate will be swung to a closed position.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what claim is: V
-1. A device of the character set f 'th including a hinged gate, inclined tracks associated with said gate, levers pivotally mounted and. associated with the inclined tracks, weight rollers connected to said on the tracks, and means connecting the levers to the gate, and an actuating-means for opening and closing the gate from either side thereof.
2. A device of the character set forth including a hinged gate, inclined tracks associated with said gate, pivotally mounted. levers associated with said tracks, Weighted rollers connecting said levers and mounted on the tracks for movement in opposite directions to each other, means connecting the levers to the gate, an actuating means connected to the gate for opening and closing the same from either side thereof, and means connecting said means to the levers.

es ates inclined tracks associated with said gate, levers pivotally mounted and associated with said tracks, Weights connected to said levers and mounted for movement on the tracks in opposite directions, rollers journaled to said levers, cables connected to the gate and passing over the rollers and having their ends permanently secured, a lever pivoted to the beam, means connecting said last named lever to the first named levers, a roller journaled to the beam and adapted to have one of the cables pass thereover, and pairs of cables connected to the second named lever for opening and'closing the gate.
