1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Haney E. Donna, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pedestal Truck Side Frames, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pedestal truck side frames. I

Heretofore pedestal truck side frames have required a special journal box. Accordingly, such a side frame could not be used for replacements of arch bars or the standard type of frame, both of which use Master Car Builders journal boxes.

Therefore, one object of this invention is to provide a simple and novel pedestal truck side frame which will accommodate Master Car Builders journal boxes.

Another object is to provide a truck side frame which may be detachably connected to a journal box in a manner to facilitate assembling the parts in question and whereby an emergency fastening is formed should the truck be derailed or lifted from the track by any part other than the axle.

These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of my improved pedestal truck side frame showing its means of attachment to Master Car Builders standard journal boxes;

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same arrangement; and,

Fig. 3 is an end view.

The various novel features of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a truck side frame 10 having pedestal jaws 11, the lower ends of which terminate in laterally extending portions 12 which extend toward each other lengthwise of the side frame. These extending jaw portions 12 engage the sides of the Master Car Builders journal box 13 intermediate its ends, and more particularly intermediate the vertical planes of the journal box bolt lugs 14. As is apparent from the arrangement disclosed in the figures of the drawings, it will be impossible to apply the side frame to the journal box Specification of Letters Patent;

vertical movement while the jaw. extensions 12 are intermediate journal boxbolt lugs 14. Accordingly, to apply the side frame to the journal box when the latter is fixed on the journal, the side frame 10 is moved inwardly with respect to the journal box to a point where the relatively nar row jaw extensions 12 may pass vertically downwardly between the inner journal box bolt lugs 14 and the dust guard housing 15. YVith the side frame in this position, the same maybe lowered, permitting the jaw extensions 12 to pass vertically downwardly beyond the upper journal box bolt lugs 14, whereupon the side frame may be moved relatively outwardly with respect to the journal box to take its normal operating position. These jaw extensions 12 when in their normal position embrace the sides of the journal box for assisting in maintaining the operative position of said side frame relative to the journal box, and also act as an emergency fastening for maintaining the connection between the side frame and the journal box, and, therefore, the wheels and axles, in the event that the truck is derailed or is lifted from the track by any part or other than the axles.

This means includes removable pins 16 which extend vertically downwardly through openings 17 in the top of the side frame 10 over the pedestal jaws, said pins having heads 18 which are accom modated by relatively larger openings 19 which extend from the top of the side frames to the pin openings 17 in the upper wall 20 of the jaws. These pins 16 are so spaced and centered that they pass downwardly into the regular bolt openings 21 in the bolt lugs 14 of the standard Master Car Builders journal box, so that when the side frame and journal box have been applied to each other in the manner hereinabove described, the pins 16 are inserted to form the final locking arrangement, which normally prevents relative lateral movement between the side frame and journal box. After the pins 16 are set in place, cotters or other suitable keys 22 may be driven through transverse openings near the lower end of the pins 16. The pedestal jaw arrangement with its extensions and the removable pin arrangement 16 cooperate to maintain the side frame and journal box in their normal functioning positions, and at the same time greatly facilitate the assembling and disassembling of the parts.

It is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A pedestal truck side frame including pedestal jaws having at their lower ends portions extending toward each other which embrace the sides of Master Car Builders journal boxes below and between the bolt lugs thereof for assisting in retaining the operative position of saidside frame and journal box, th upper portions of said jaws being spaced from the boxes to accommodate the bolt lugs, said side frame having holes and removable pins extending through said holes and movable into bolt holes in the bolt lugs of the journal boxes for normally preventing relative lateral movement between the side frame and boxes.

2. A pedestal truck side frame including pedestal jaws having at their. lower ends portions extending toward each other which embrace the sides of a journal box, below and between lugs thereof for assisting 'in anaintairiing the operative position of said HA RY E. Donna.
