F. K. REIBIN.
'/ENTlLATOR OPERATING DEVICE.
APPLICATION min Ammo, 1919.
.11,3 58, 46% Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
ifi El ,accessible by thev guard ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 STEVE MIHALKEVICZ, OF MIDDIETOWN, CON- NECTICUT.
Application filed August 30, 1919. Serial No.
To all 207mm it may concern,
e it known that I, FEDOR KoNsrANTINo- EIBIN, a citizen of Russia, residing at RobsomProvince of British Columbia, and
ominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilator- Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
his invention has as its object the provision of means whereby the windows of a car or like structure may be opened or closed simultaneously, from a single point easily or conductor of the car.
A further object is to arrange the parts so that the windows ateither the front or rear of the car m. y be opened without disturbing the other.
A further object is to provide means whereby the windows or shutters may be or partially as may be p ferred and held in an adjusted position.
hese and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a conventional type of car and indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevational view showing the operating mechanism, parts being in section in order to disclose the construction, and,
ig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 3-3 of i0.
eferring to the drawings in detail, a conventional type of car is indicated by the numeral 10, the same having vestibule entrances 11 at ,each end and is provided with cally in the ordinary manner.
ttached to one or both of the vestibule walls 13, is a hollow conical bracket 14, having an extending hub 15, in which is threaded a sleeve 16, formed with or secured to a portion of ft may move longitudinally a definite distance.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented Nov. 9, 1920. 320,943.
Formed in the end of the shaft 18, within the hub 15, is an annular groove 22 into a ring 23, formed with the sleeve 16, so that as the sleeve is rotated, by means of the hand wheel, the; shaft 18is moved longitudinally Within its bearings. A hub 2-1, formed with a lever bar 25, and having an actuating handle 26, by which it may same having an extending operating handle desired position.
Also secured upon1 the shaft18 are a plurality of spur pinions 32, and 32 which are engageable with racks 33 and 33 to the windows in such manner that the same may be raised or lowered; v
In operation, when it is desired to open and close the rear windows of the car, the hand wheel 17 is rotated so as shaft 18 outwardly, until the collar 20 contacts with the wall 2l and the gears 32' have meshed with the corresponding racks 33, whereupon the handle 26 is rotated, conveying rotary motion to the gears and operating the windows in an obvious manner.
If it be desired to operate the windows at the other end of the car, the hand wheel 17 is turned in the opposite direction so as shaft 18 longitudinally, contacts with the wall 21, causing other gears 32 to engage with the racks 33, whereupon movement will be transmitted to the windows, and due to thefact that the ratchet 28 may slide upon the shaft, it is operative with' either set of the gears so that the windows may be actuated at either end of the car from the platform.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and ters Patent, is`
1. In a window operating device, the combination with a car having a plurality of is set in the shaft 18,
desire to secure by Letto move the windows slida'ble in a vertical plane, of a shaft rotatably journaled and movable longitudinally in said car adjacent to said windows, means for limiting the longitudinal movement of said shaft, a bracket secured to one of the end walls of said car through which said shaft passes, a sleeve screw-threaded into said bracket, means'for rotating said sleeve, engaging means between said sleeve and said shaft whereby the shaft is moved longitudinally when sai sleeve is rotated, means for manually vrotating said shaft, a ratchet slidably engaged on said shaft, a spring-pressed detent engaged with said ratchet, means for releasing said spring-pressed detent, a plurality of pinions fixed on said shaft, and racks fixed on each of said windows, said pinions being engageable with said racks.
2. ln a ventilator operating device, the combination with a plurality of ventilators, racks attached thereto, a shaft adjacent to said ventilators, pinions secured upon sai shaft engageable with said racks, a bracket through which said shaft passes,v a hub formed on said bracket, said hub having screw threads, a screw threaded sleeve engageable therein and connected to the shaft, means for manually rotating said sleeve whereby said shaft may be moved lengthwise, means for rotating said shaft, and means' for holding said shaft when rotated, whereby the pinions of said shaft are engaged with said racks holding the same in an adjusted position. i
In testimony whereof l have afiixed my signature.
