In making thecomposition the japan drier, when used, will be added to and thoroughly mixed with the linseed oil. The petroleum'naphtha will then be mixed with the linseed oil after which the hydrocarbon oil will be added to the mixture of linseed oil and naphtha. The hydrocarbon oil being a thinner willbe added in quantities sufiicient to give the fluidity required for spraying-the mixture in applying 1t.
In applying the composition to metal surfaces such as pipes and tubesit preferably will be sprayed thereon, so as to cover the surfaces of the treated materials with a thin protective coating which, after becoming dry ejfectively prevents rusting of the coated materials, even when exposed to the elements for long time intervals.
It is found whenthe mixture is applied the hydrocarbon oils and naphtha evaporate quickly and the linseed oil dries, leaving a residue-which forms a thin, hard protective covering on the coated surfaces which effectively prevents rusting ofthe coated survarious materials used in making my improved, spraying mlxture or composltion of matter are readily obtained, are cheap and is readily mix, while after being applied the mixture dries rapidly and formsa'protection against rusting which is equal to or better than more expensive compositions used heretofore for that purpose.
4. A metal surface protecting mixture inaaeoa consisting essentially of per cent. lin- 15 seed oil, 10 per cent. petroleum naphtha, and 7 5 per cent. of a hydrocarbon oil of the aromatic group.
5. A metal surface protecting mixture consisting of from 12 to 18 per cent. lin- 20 seed oil, 3 per cent. japan drier, from 8 to 12 per cent. petroleum naphtha, and from to per cent. of a hydrocarbon oil of the aromatic group.
