To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR O. LOEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in receptacles, and more particularly to safety receptacle covers or lids, the primary object being to provide a generally improved safety or self-locking cover, the present embodiment being particularly designed and adapted for use in connection with what are commonly known as garbage cans, or the like, where it is desirable to provide a lid or cover which cannot be removed in the ordinary-manner by the application of force upon the outer sides of the cover, such for example as attempts to elevate or tilt the same by such animals as dogs, cats, or the like.

A further and very important object is the provision of an improved gravity handle and latch adapted to be attached to one side of the lid or cover, the latter being provided with a rim having a downwardly and inwardly inclined latch housing to receivcthe depending latch portion of the handle latch, said. depending latch having its free end normally resting on .the inwardlv inclined portion of the housing and engaging the reccptacle wall below and held in such position to engage the marginal projections or outwardly extending rim of the receptacle can when the lid is raised independently of the latch, the ravity handle and latch being so pivoted re atively as to clear the projection or outwardly extending portion of the receptacle when elevated initially and independently of the elevation of the lid or cover.

A further object is the provision of an improved safety receptacle lid or cover having a depending rim provided with an 1nwardly struck projection opposite the gravity latch and adapted to be initially mounted on and engage one side of the marginal projection of the receptacle and to hold the lid in position at such side so that the 11d or cover is finally locked or unlocked through the medium of the handle latch at the opposite side of the lid.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a side elevation, partly in central vertical section, of a container equipped with a cover and cover locking device, constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being shown in locked position. 1

Fig. 2, a similar view of the same with the cover locking device in unlocked posit1on preparatory to the removal of the cover in the usual manner.

Fig. 3, a side elevation of the rear or receptacle engaging portion of the cover diametrically opposite the looking or latching portion thereof, and adapted to be initially passed over the marginal projection or rim of the container to engage the same when the cover is in position.

The receptacle 1, may be of any suitable and convenient form, said receptacle, in the present instance, comprising the usual cylindrical receptacle or container body and provided at its upper marginal edges with an outwardly extending projection I said projection, in the present instance, comprising the usual outwardly extending beaded mm.

The lid or cover 2, may likewise be of any suitable and convenient form and is provided with a. depending rim 2, adapted to fit over the top of the receptacle or container and preferably provided at its lower ed e with a beaded portion 2 s a means of initially mounting and securing one side of the cover 2, to the upper marginal edges of the receptacle 1, one side of the rim 2"-, is provided with a rim engaging portion consisting, in the present instance, of struck out tongues or projections 2.

The rim engaging portions or members 2, are preferably struck inwardly (see Fig. 3) formingdownwardly and outwardly inclined portions and terminating in shoulders 2 to readily slip over the rim projection 1, and to engage on the under side of the same when the cover is down and retained by the gravity handle latch, hereinafter referred to.

By reason ofthe construction described it will be apparent that when thelid or cover is raised without elevating the latch 3*, through the handle 3, the inclined portion 2?, of the latch housing will maintain the free end of the latch in contact with the receptacle and cause the same to come into engagement with the rim projection 1 and thus prevent the removal of the lid, and as a means of so pivoting the latch that the free end 3", will clear the rim projection 1, when elevated initially independently of the elevation of the lid, the

Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, without having set forth all the forms in which it may be made or all the modes of its use, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,--

1. In a receptacle, a receptacle having a a cover having at one side a rim engaging portion and at the other a downwardly and inwardly inclined latch housing, and a gravity handle and latch plvoted on said cover, said latch having its free end normally supported within said such housing to engage said projecting rim when the lid is elevated independently of said latch.

2. In a receptacle, a receptacle having a marginal projection, a lid provided with a rim having an inwardly extending portion adapted to be initially mounted beneath and to engage one side of said receptacle marginal projection, said rim being provided with an opening and a downwardly and inwardly inclined latch housing, and a pivoted gravity handle above said=lid terminating in a depending latch having'its free end extending inwardly and normally resting on the inclined portion of said latch housing and against the adjacent receptacle wall below said receptacle projection and adapted to engage the latter when the lid is raised independently of the latch, said latch being so pivoted as to be thrown outwardly to clear the projection of the receptacle when elevated independently of the elevation of the lid.

3. In a receptacle, a receptacle body having an outwardly extending projection about its upper marginal portion, a cover having a depending rim rovided at one side with means for initia ly engaging one side of said projection of said receptacle, said rim being provided at its diametrically opposite side with an opening and a wedge shaped latch housing, and a pivoted handle on said cover terminating in a depending latch member in said latch housing adapted to engage said receptacle projection and be held in engagement therewith by said 'wedge shaped housing when the cover is raised independently of said handle.

4. In a receptacle, a receptacle body having an outwardly extending marginal projection, a cover having a rim provided on its inner side with means for initially engaging one side of said marginal projection, said rim being provided with a struck out latch housing having a downwardly and inwardly inclined portion, and a pivoted gravity handle terminating in a depending latch member normally resting on said inclosed portion'of said latch housing to engage said receptacle projection when the cover is raised independently of said gravity handle, the latter being so pivoted relative to said receptacle projection and inclined portion of said housing as to clear said receptacle projection when elevated independently of the movement of said cover.

5. In a receptacle, a receptacle provided with a marginal projection, a receptacle lid provided with a depending rim having mwardly struck projections adapted to be initially mounted on and to engage one side of the marginal projection of said receptacle, said rim being provided at its diametrically opposite side with an opening at the top and a latch housing having a downwardly and inwardly inclined portion; and a pivoted handle on said lid terminating in a depending latch operable in said housing, said depending latch havingits free end normally resting on said inwardly inclined portion and engaging the adjacent receptacle wall below and adapted to engage the marginal projection of the receptacle when the lid is raised independently of the latch, said latch being so pivoted relatively as to clear the 10 projection of the receptacle when elevated independently of the elevation of the lid.
