Description
J. VAN METER.
LOCOMOTIVE BLOW-OFF COCK DEVICE, APPLICATIOR mm 111N227. 1919.
1,358,266. Patented Nov; 9, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE VAN METER, 0 F GHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS.
LOGOMO'IIVE-BLOW-OFF-COCK nnvrcn.
Application filed June 27,
To all 20 ham it may 0071 cam Be it known that I, Jnssn VAN METER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Champaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Blow-ofi-Cock Devices, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide in a device of the class described means for blowing off a locomotive within easy reach of the engineer or fireman.
Another object is to provide improved means for positioning the operating handle of the device with respect to the blow-off cock to which it is attached.
lVith these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are hereinafter described with reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, each view showing the device applied to a fragment of an engine running board, and a fragment of a blow-oif cock.
As shown in the drawing, an aperture 1 is cut in the running board 2 of the engine, and the frame 3 is bolted to the running board at 4.
Slidably mounted in the frame 3, at 5, and 6, is a lifting rod 7, having ratchet teeth 8 on one face thereof.
A dog 9, hinged at 10 to the frame 3, nor mally held by the spring 11 in engagement with the ratchet teeth 8, has a lever 12 ex tending upwardly adjacent to the lifting rod 7 Hinged to the lifting rod at 13 is a connecting rod 14 which carries at the other end a yoke 15 adapted to be connected to the blow-off cock control 16.
I prefer to form the lower end of the lifting rod with a threaded aperture 17, to which the jaw nut 18 is connected by thread engagement, to facilitate the assembling of the device.
Similarly I prefer to form the frame 3 with a pair of jaws 19 so the running board of the engine may be securely clamped between these jaws, thus rigidly mounting the frame to the running board.
To accommodate varlous runmng boards Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 307,216.
Also, if the engine to which the device is to be applied is equipped with wooden running boards, it is apparent that the hole through which the frame is passed should be. reinforced with sheet iron, or similar means, all of which methods are readily within the ability of the ordinary mechanic.
With the device installed as shown and described, in blowing off the engine it is only necessary to press the top of the lever 12 in toward the lifting rod to release the dog from the ratchet teeth and pull the handle 20 of the lifting rod up until the blowpfi is opened wide.
To close the blow-oil it is only necessary to push down on the handle 20 of the lifting rod, the dog 9 engaging with the ratchet teeth and holding the lifting rod in its lowered position.
While I have described my invention and illustrated it in one particular design, I do not wish it understood that I limit myself to this construction, as it is evident that the application of'the invention may be varied in many ways within the scope of the following claims:
1. The combination with the running board of a locomotive having an aperture cut therethrough, of a frame, a lifting rod slidably mounted in said frame, ratchet teeth. positioned along one side of said lifting rod, a spring controlled dog carried by said frame, and adapted to. engage with said ratchet teeth, a lever extending from said dog whereby said dog may be disengaged from said ratchet teeth, a connecting rod hinged to the lower end of said lifting rod, and means carried by the lower end of said conlrilecting rod for attaching to a blow-off coc 2. The combination with the running board of a locomotive having an aperture out therethrough, and a blow-off cock control of a locomotive, of a frame positioned. through said aperture and clamped to said blow-off cock control.
3. In a blow-off cock device, the combinatlon of a frame adapted to be positioned through an aperture in a locomotive running board, two parallel jaws extending outwardly from said frame and adapted to clamp 'therebetween said running board, a lifting rod slidably mounted in said frame, a releasable dog carried by safid frame,
ratchet teeth carried by said lifting rod with which said dog engages, and means extending from said'lifting rod to engage with a blow off cock control of the locomotive, whereby the lifting of the lifting rod will actuate said blow-off cock control.
4. In a locomotive blow-elf cock device, the combinationwith a mounting frame, of a lifting rod slidably mounted therein, a handle formed at the upper end of said lifting-rod, the opposite end of said lifting rod having a'threaded aperture therein, a jaw nut having a threaded end engaging with saidaperture in said lifting rod, and a connecting rod hinged in said jaw nut, and having a yoke at its opposite end to attach to the blow-ofi cock of a locomotive.
