State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating Attachments for 'lypewriting-Machines of which the'following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an-attaclmwnt for cooperation with the numeral key levers of a typewriting machine, the'present invention pertaining particularly to means by which sums written in different columns upon a sheet of paper in the carriage of a typewriting mac ine may be set up in a sin le accumulator, and further to means un er the control of the accumulator operating mechanism for actuating connectors by which the typcwritipg machine numeral key levers are connected to the calculating mechanism.

In the practical use of the mechanism herein described, the o ration is as follows:

When the line of gures has been written the sheet of paper in the typewriting machineplaten carriage and set up in the accumulator, the dog 29 escapes from the driver 1 it "has enga ed and the mechanism herein described, including the master wheelcarriage, is returned to normal position due in part to the action of the spring 11 and in part to the action of the spring 33. The typewriting machine platen carriage is then advanced to the point at which the second column of figures is to be written upon the sheet of paper in the carriage, and the second driver 1 being located in correspondence to the location of this second column ofligures, said second driver provides for a second actuation of the master wheel carriage F, simultaneously with the operation of the typewriting machine platen carriage. Therefore, the sum written in the second column is set up in the accumulator 4. If the accumulator is one having mechanism operable either forwardly or reversely, the'itemsinthe second column may either be'added to those in the first column or subtracted therefrom, "and the -result shown in the accumulator. It will be apparent that if the accumulator 'is one having mechanism operable in one direction only the result ac complished would be one of addition only.
As previously mentioned, the dog 29 is pivoted at 30 and held by a spring 31 against the stop 32 when it is to be engaged by the drivers I. When it is desired to use the typewriting machine independently of the calculating mechanism, the dog 29 may be moved outflof the way of the driver 1. The sprin 31-is attached to an arm extending'latera ly from one side of the dog 29, and when said dog is moved to the left from the position shown in Fig. V to a'position which'will place it out of the path of travel of the drivers 1, the point of connection between thespring and the lateral extension of the dog is carried in an arc of a circle to a position beyond the axis of the dog 29, so that the'pull upon said dog by the spring 31 will serve to hold the dog in an inoperative position. The 'dog being held in this position, the platen carriage of the typewriting machine may move to and fro during the use of said machine for ordinary writing, the said dog being returned to operative position only when calculations are to be performed.
' It is desirable, in the use of a typewriting machine for operating calculating mechanism, to provide means whereby the calculating mechanism may be disconnected from the numeral key levers of the typewriting machine so that said numeral key levers may be utilized during ordinary writing operations. In my earlier invention shown and described in Patent No. 1,003,671 hereinbefore mentioned, the disconnection of the calculating mechanism from the key levers is accomplished through the medium of the platen carriage of the typewriting machine, but according to my present invention such disconnection is performed by mechanism actuated by the master wheel carriage F, which controls the position of the master wheel by which the accumulator elements are operated.
The calculating mechanism includes operating elements 35 (see Fig.1) to which are pivoted connectors 36 having upwardly extending members movable into and out of engagement with studs Ir; on the numeral key levers K of the typewriting machine.

This shifter bar comprises an arm 43 which engages the rocker'39 and an arm 44 engaged by the master wheel carriage F. j A y lVhen the calculating mechanism with which my improvements are utilized is at rest, the master wheel carriage F occupies a position immediately back of the lefthand end of the accumulator 4, as previously mentioned, being held in this position by the spring 11. The spring 11 is'stronger than the spring 41 connectedto the rock shaft 40 of the rocker 39, and consequently holds the master wheel carriage in its lefthand position and exerts a force against the shifter bar S sufiiciently great to overcome the tendency of the spring 41 to move the rocker 39 forwardly. However, when the master wheel carriage F is moved toward the right, as herein previously explained, during calculating operations, the shifter bar is relieved of the holding influence-offered by the spring 11 and the spring 41 acts to movethe rocker 39 forwardly, with the result of actuating the connectors 36 so that they are placed in engagement with the connection elements [won the key levers K, upon the occurrence of which engagement the calculating mechanism becomes operable by said key levers. Upon the return of the master wheel carriage F to its left hand position the connectors 36 are thrown to inoperative positions, due to the actuation of the shifter bar S by the master wheel carriage.
I claim 1. The combination with a typewriting masses travelin power transmission member from which the step by step movement is transmitted, and an oscillatory transmission arm extending into the path of said traveling power transmission member, said transmission arm being provided with an extension positively driven in one directon to positively transmit the step by step movement, and said extension being free to yield idly in the opposite direction.
9. The combination with a typewriting machine having digit keys and a platen carriage, of calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with total wheels and a traveling carriage movable step by step to provide for the transmission of movement to the different total wheels, accumulator operating means including devices whereby motion is transmitted from said digit keys to actuate the total wheels, and feeding devices whereby motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said traveling carriage so as to advance the latter step by step, said feeding devices comprising a traveling power transmission member carried by said platen carriage, a driven member through which movement is transmitted to said traveling carriage, and an abutment pivoted to one of said members and extending into the path of the other member to provide for the transmission of movement to said driven member, the pivoted abutment being free to move idly in one direction so as to permit the platen carriage to travel in one direction without transmitting movement to said driven member.
10. The combination with a typewriting machine having digit keys and a platen carriage, of calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with total wheels and a traveling carriage movable step by step to provide for the transmission of movement to the different total wheels, accumulator operating means including devices whereby motion is transmitted from said digit keys to actuate the total wheels, and feeding devices whereby motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said traveling carriage so as to advance the latter step by step, said feeding devices comprising a traveling power transmission member carried by said platen carriage, an oscillatory driven member through which movement is transmitted to said traveling carriage, an abutment finger pivoted to said oscillatory driven member and extending into the path of said traveling power transmission member, the pivoted abutment finger being free to move idly in one direction so as to permit the platen carriage to travel in one direction without actuating said driven member, and a restoring spring whereby said oscillatory driven member is yieldingly held in its normal position, said pivoted abutment finger being located in said path when the driven member occupies its normal position.
11. The combination with a typewriting machine having digit keys and a platen carriage, of calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator "provided with total wheels and a traveling carriage movable step by step to provide for the transmission of movement to the different total wheels, accumulator operating means iniluding devices whereby motion is transmitted from said digit keys to actuate the total wheels, and feeding devices whereby motion is transmitted from said platen carria e to said traveling carriage so as to advance the latter step by step, said feeding devices comprising a traveling power transmission member carried b said platen carriage, a driven member t rough which motion is transmitted to said traveling carriage, an intermediate member through which motion is transmitted from said traveling power transmission member to said driven member, said intermediate member beingzpivoted to said driven member and shiftable to an inoperative position wherein it cannot transmit movement from said traveling power transmission member to said driven member, and means for retaining said intermediate member in its inoperative position.
12. The combination with a typewriting machine having digit keys and a platen carriage, of calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with total wheels and a traveling carriage movable step by step to provide for the transmission of movement to the different total wheels, accumulator operating means including devices whereby motion is transmitted from said digit keys to actuate the total wheels, and feeding devices whereby motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said traveling carriage so as to advance the latter step by step, said feeding devices comprising a traveling power transmission member carried by said platen carriage, a driven member through which motion is transmitted to said traveling carriage, an abutment pivoted to said driven member and extending into the path of said traveling power transmission member to provide for the transmission of movement to said driven member, the pivoted abutment being movable on its axis to an inoperative position beyond said path, and means for retaining said pivoted abutment in its inoperative position.
13. The combination of a t pewriting machine having key levers an a platen carriage movable step by step, and calculatin mechanism operable by said key levers and including an accumulator and a master wheel for actuating said accumulator, a carriage for advancing said master wheel along the accumulator, a throw lever from which movement is transmitted to the last mentioned carriage, and means for transmitting the step by step movement from said platen carriage to said throw lever, the last mentioned means comprising an oscillatory shaft through which the movement is transmitted and an arm fixed to said shaft and extended into the path of a poition of said platen carriage.

The combination of a t cpewriting machine having key levers, a traveling platen carriage and calculating mechanism operable by said key levers, said calculating mechanism including an accumulator and an actuator therefor, one of which is movable step by step to change their denominw tional relation, an oscillatory arm through which the step by step movement is transmitted, said oscillatory arm being extended into the ath of said platen carriage. connectors t rough which movement is transmitted from said key levers to said ectuator, said connectors being movable to and from their operative positions, and the last 1 ,esssaa' mentioned movements being controlled from said oscillatory arm.
15. The combination of a typewriting machine havin key levers, a traveling platen carriage an calculating mechanism operable by said key levers, said calculating mechanism including an accumulator and an actuator therefor, one of which is movable step by step to change their denominational relation, an oscillatory arm through which the step by step movement is transmitted, said oscillatory arm being extended into the path of said platen carriage, connectors through which movement is transmitted from said hey levers to said actuator, said connectors being provided with connecting hooks movable into and out of operative engagement with said key levers, and said connecting hooks being under the control of said oscillatory arm.
