Description
H. R. YARDLEY.
LIGHTING FIXTURE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 31, 1919.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
A TTORNE Y3.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE R. YARDLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO R. WILLIAMSON & 00., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
LIGHTING-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N 0v. 9, 1920.
To (2Z7 whom it may concern:
do it known that It, Home R. YARDLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook, State of Illinois. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lighting-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of lighting fixtures which have diffusion bowls with openings in the bottom, for the purpose of ezlsy access to the lamp for removal and replacement pur mses, and has for its ob ject to provide practically shadowless means for closing said opening and venting same.
.r further object is to provide such means adapted to receive and etain in position an ornament to be secured thereto, when desired.
lvlv invention consists of certain details of eon ruction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
frigure I shows a side elevation view of a complete fixture, fitted out with'my device.
Fig. ll shows an inverted plan view of the cap I employ.
Fig. Ill shows a detail view, of the base of a bowl, and my device (in section) secured thereto.
Fig. IV shows an enlarged detail view, in sectibn illustrating how my device is secured to the base of a bowl.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the reference numeral 10 is used to indicate a diffusion bowl of a lighting fixture, provided with an enlarged opening at its base this opening being of sufllcient size to permit of the passage therethrough of the electrio lamp. I The bond is flared around said opening, as shown at 11.
The numeral 12 indicates a ring, preferablv of metal, designed to ht said opening and to be secured thereto by set screws 13,. or other means, said ring having arms 14,
extending toward the center thereof and preferably curving downwardly and inwardly to a central portion 15, provided with. an opening 20 to receive a pendant ornament 16. Mounted on the upper horizontal surface of the ring 12 are a plurality of spaced lugs 17, designed to support a disk 18 Which closes the opening in the base of and engage, the periphery of the disk 18.
By this construction it is obvious the opening in the base of the diffusion bowl will not onl be closed, but means is also provided for venting, consisting of the spaced relation between the lower surface of the dish, and the upper horizontal surface of the ring, and the spaced relation between the periphery of the disk and the inner surface of the diffusion bowl. This disk when used with a diffusion bowl is preferably constructed of diffusion glass, but it is obvious my invention may also be used for indirect lighting and when so employed with an opaque bowl the disk is preferably opaque.
In practical operation my device, as has been shown by demonstration, not only accomplishes the objects set forth, but is free from the objection of casting shadows.
it is obvious the opening in the base of my bowl instead of flaring outwardly, may be turned inwardly and the ring secured thereto by other means than set screws, such as projections on the ring, or the like, without in any manner changing the function, the manner of functioning, or the result of my device, and this and other means are contemplated by my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a lighting fixture a bowl with an opening in the base of sufiicient size to permit the pas, e of the lamp therethrough; ring secured t0 bowl and surrounding 5 id opening; arms radiating inwardly from said ring to a hub; a disk, covering the opening in t a bowl, secured to said ring.
2-. in a 1A,. opening in the base of sufiicient size to permit of the passage of the lamp therethrough; a ring secured to said bowl and surrounding said opening; a dis; covering the opening in the bowl, secured to said ring; arms radiating inwardly from said ring to a hub and an orifice in the hub to receive an ornament.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
