Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Application filed September 29, 1919.` Serial No. 327,340.
To all whom it may concern.' i
Be it known that I, RAYMOND B. GLID- nnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at hewanee, in the countyof Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bottle-Cappers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bottle-capping appliances such as are adapted to seal bottles with sheetinetal caps containing disks of cork or other suitable material by bending or crimping the edges of the cap or closure Overthe end of the bottle. Its leading object is the provision of a device of this type capable of eiiiciently performing such work, which is simple in structure and economical to produce, at the same time beingof such form and having its operative parts so associated or connected together that the appliance is unlikely to be damaged or broken in service.
ln order that those skilled in this art may become acquainted with the structural characteristics of a desirable embodiment of the invention and may have a full understanding of its functional capabilities, l have illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and throughout the views of which like reference characters refer to the same parts.
ln this drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of the device attached to a wall, shown in association with a portion of a bottle;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus of Fig. 1 with a portion of the handle broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-8 of Fig. 1 with the bottle omitted.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that the device comprises a bracketmember 10 adapted to be fastened to a wall or other suitable support by means of screws 11, 11, extended through apertures 12, 12, of` the main body of such element which is adapted to rest flatwise against the face of the wall as shown in Fig. 1. At its bottom end such bracket is provided with an inte gral projection 13 equipped with a pair of curved arms 14, 14, the faces of which unitedly or conjointly form a recess or socket adapted to receive a portion of the neck of the bottle 15, whereby the latter is adapted to be easily and quickly centered beneath the reciprocatory capper ready for the action of such element on thecap of the bottle.
This projection 13 is provided with a vertical hole 16 therethrough into which is tightly litted and firmly held the lower end of an upstanding cylindrical guiderod 17 on which slides an apertured vertical rih18 of a hollow reciprocating or sliding capper 19, which is shaped internally to perform the capping operation with facility and despatch. Upstanding from such capper there is an apertured lug 20 'the upper portion of which is received in a cavity or socket 21 in the lower face of a lever handle 22, the parts 2O and 22 having a hinge connection 'by reason of a hinge bolt 23 which entends horizontally through the perforation of the lug 20 and the alined apertures in the side-walls of the cavity 21. 3 t
`The upper end portion of the bracket '10 is provided with two forwardly-extended ears 24, 24, apertured in register or alinenient for the reception of a fulcrum-bolt 25 extending through an elongated longitudinally-disposed slot in the end portion of the handle lever which is positioned between the two supporting ears 24, 24.
The appliance illustrated and described operates substantially as follows:
With the lever handle 22 elevated as shown in Fig. 1, with the capper 19 in raised position and the fulcrum pin or bolt 25 in the inner portion of the slot of the lever, the bottle 15 and its cap are inserted in place, being guided to and held in proper position or register with the reciprocatory capper by curved arms 14, 14. Thereupon, the capper is pressed downwardly by depression of the handle 22, the capper sliding in a straight line by reason of its association with the 'guide-post or standard 17 and being pre vented from turning on such post because of its connection with the handle and the pivotal connection of the latter with the bracket ears 24. Such depression of the capper causes its inner surface to engage the cap and crimp its edge over the mouth of the bottle as is shown in Fig. 1. The cap ailiX- ing operation having been thus completed, the capper is again raised by the lifting of the handle and the capped bottle removed so that the appliance is -again ready for the reception of an yuncapped bottleas explained above.
It Will be understood that because of the loose ulcrlun connection of the lever 'or handle with the bracket the cappenqisgpermitted to have a straight line up and down movement as determined by its lsliding connection with the fixed post or standard 17, the fulcrum connection `automatically `accommodating itself as is required to permit such straight-line motion ,ofthe capper.` Inasmuch asgthelever or vhandle kcannot turn or shift sidewise onv its ulcr-urmbolt and like displacement vot the capper relatively tothe handleis prevented, the capper can- -tnotmturnaboutfthe guiderod and is com- Vpeflled to-slidein a rectilinear path.
Theseskilled in ,this art will appreciate thatL the 4invention is-not necessarily limited to the preciseand exact features fof t construe tion ci4v this particular embodiment thereof anLdthat-many minor mechanical 'changes may be incorporated in the ,structure wvithout departure from the substance and/essence of the invention and Withoutl the sacrifice of any of its substantialV benefits and advantages.
j I claim:
