This invention relates to tillage implements and is shown illustrated in connection with a type of straddle row cultivator shown in a copending application ot' (lhai'les Sharp #.3Il,l)-l5, filed October 4. lilla.
The ,general arrangement ot' the cultivatin-` to which the invention is yshown applied, comprises an arched wheel axle havin;r tor Wardly extending' arms swiveled thereto. the arms carrying* the. supportingl wheels near the swiveled connection with the axle and at their forward ends being' connected with a cross member to which the gang' frames are, attached. lln swiveling the wheels hy means of foot levers for the purpose ot r-teerirgr the deviceq the cross men her slides laterallyY with respect to a rigidi longue carryingr 'tramo upon which the cross member hears. and in this lateral motion ca 1ries with it the gang or tool carrying frames. `his results in a multiplied lateral motion o the tool carrying: trames' with reference' to the lateral motion of the cultivator as a Whole. occurs in a numher of differently designed cultiv vators now commonly in use.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide in the tvpe of machine described for properly maintaining` its halanee as the tool carrying frames are raised and lowered without necessitating material additions thereto or in any wav making; less satisfac- K torv the normal action of the machine. The tendency ot' the machine to tilt forwardly or rearwardly when the tool earning trames are raised and lowered is thus counteracted without a`ecting the action of the mechanism for steering' and lateral shiftingl ot' the gang.

Cultivators are usually so arranged that while at work in cutting at some normal or predetermined depth. the reaction of the soil against the soil working tools will be suhstantially in the line of draft. and therefore such devices have the tendencyY to rotate around the axis of the simpel-ting wheels only when the tool carrying frames are raised or lowered with resnect to their normal working' position. This may result in an objectionable vertical motion of the tongue and annoyance to the draft animals, particularly when the tools are raised clear 'pt the around noon turningy at the end of a frow. Such action nreferftbly is collateracted in the nresent design hv cansinor a relative longitudinal motion between main supporting;r structure of the machine including' l the supportino wheels and fang frames, and the torene and seat support. during the raisine and loweringr of the gangs.

The axles 6 are in gather, while the end portions of the this manner tied tosleeve S is tree to rotate a limited extent around the portions T of the axles. The arms 3 are tied together at their forward ends by a tool beam sup orting har l0 and a transverse I-beam 11. ach arm 3 has a vert-ical end portion 12 eatending into the socket of a bracket member 13, connecting the har 10 and beam 11. The tool frames 14 carry sleeves 15 at the"Y forward upper ends, encircling the bars 1U, and are by means of links 16 and lever 17 secured to the bar to move therewith during the swiveling motion of arms 3 and brackets 4 on the portions of 5 of axles 6. The arms 3, being parallel and Amovingr in an are around the parts 5, maintain the beam sup-A porting bar 10 parallel with sleeves 8 during the swiveling motion, and accordingly the tool frames 14 are maintained parallel with the normal line of draft when the vehicle is stee dto right and left far enough to cause t e soil working tools to avoid cutting irregular plants of a row. i
The mea-ns for etfectin;r the steering acv tion consists of foot levers 18 pivoted to seat trame 19 at QQ, and at their Jforward upper ends being attached to chains 21 which pass around lixed pulleys 2Q and then extend inwardly where they are attached to u casting 23 secured to the tool beam supporting bar 10. By this means. when the lower end of one of the foot levers 18 is pushed forwardly, lthe member 10 is shifted either to the right or to the let't, depending,r which foot lever is forced forwardly, thus Swingingr the arms 3, brackets Ll and wheels 1 around their pivotal support 5.
In order to adjust the gang trames 14 toward or away from each other so as to operate closer or farther away from a row ot plants between the gangs, the lever '17, to which the links 16 are attached at opposite ends may be rotated around its central pivot on castingr Rotation ot" lever 1T is effected hy an adjustable and lockable handle Q4.

The frame 27 at its rear end is also pivoted to arms 43 rigid with sleeve 8. Accordingly, when lever 38 is rocked upwardly from a position in which it is shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3, the sleeve Q is rotated to the right, causing forward movement of the frame, seat support 19 and tongue 25 attached thereto with res ect to the re -mainder of the machine.
