Application filed March 29, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HARRY DEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel spring locking fastener for sliding windows.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a vertical section through the sash lock showing the same applied and in operative position,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the latch portion of the lock, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the lockin operative position.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate two movable parts which are the core and upper edges of window sashes.
Adapted to be positioned in the movable part 2 on the upper edge of the lower sash of the window is a casing 4 provided with an outer face, that is disposed in alinement with the outer face of said part 2. Said casing i has pivotally mounted in the lower portion thereof, a latch member 5, which is formed of a strip having a pair of oppositely extending trunnions 6 on its opposite side edges and adjacent its lower edge that are adapted to be positioned in corresponding openings in the sides of the casing at near the bottom thereof. Said strip extends outwardly to form an inclined portion 7 for said latch, and then abruptly inwardly parallel with the upper edge of the sash 2 forming a shoulder 8, said strip terminating in an upwardly projecting and reduced handle port-ion 9 that extends through a slot 10 in the top of the casing and is formed with an enlarged head 11 on the extremity thereof. The projecting lip portion of the latch 5 forms a recess therein adapted to receive the outer end of an angular spring 12 positioned therein and having its inner edge positioned against the upper inner corner of the casing 4. This spring is positioned as is clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings,
' and consequently will tend to normally hold the latch 5 projecting outwardly through the inner face of the edge 2 of the sash.

lower edge of the upper sash is provided with a notch 13 in its inner face that com municates with the upper sides thereof, said notch having an inclined inner face. A latch plate 1&1 disposed parallel with the upper edge of the movable portion 1 and countersunk therein, is positioned over the portion of the notch that extends through said upper edge.
In operation, when the various parts of the device are positioned as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the sash will be securely locked by the latch projecting within the notch in the movable portion 1 said notch forming a keeper in conjunction with the plate 14 to securely hold the latch therein. To release the movable parts 1 and 2 so the sashes of the window may be moved,
the handle 9 is grasped by the enlarged head,
11 and moved along the slot 10, whereby the projecting portion of the latch will be withdrawn within the casing fl: in the movable part 2 so as to permit the movable parts 1 and 2 to slide out of alinement with each other.
On closing the window the inclined portion 7 of the latch 5 will come into engage ment with the edge of the plate 14, and this will force the latch back into the casing el against the tension of the spring 12. Immediately upon the inclined portion of the latch bearing the plate 14:, the spring will force the latch into the notch which forms the keeper and the straight portion 8 of said latch will be disposed beneath the plate 14: hence, preventing movement between the parts 1 and 2 until the latch has been once more drawn back into the casing. The casing is securely held within the part 2 by means of projecting shoulders 15 on the upper edge thereof that are secured to the top of the upper edge of said parts by fastening members 16 that are positioned therethrough.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and compre hensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantage of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination with an upper window sash having a notch in its lower edge, and a lower window sash having a recess in its upper edge for registration with the aforementioned notch, a casing having an open front seated in the recess in thelower sash, a plate over the notch and registering with the upper edge of the casing, a strip of a width substantially the same as the width of the casing pivoted in the lower port-ion thereof and bent outwardly therefrom and inwardly substantially parallel with the upper edge of the casing to form a catch for engaging the plate, the engaging portion of the catch adapted to contact with the greater portion of the under face of the plate to lock the sashes in position, and a finger grip extending vertically from the inner edge of the inwardly bent portion of the strip and through the top of the casing for moving the strip to release the same from the plate for the purpose set forth.
