Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST E. CONRAD, OF PHILADEL PHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO MATTHIAS MEIR, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADE HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol35,778, dated February ll, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST E. CONRAD, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State I of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Shades of Lamps and other Illuminatin g Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a M clear and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in a shadeholder, the encircling band of which is constructed in sections, which are lap-jointed to each other in such a manner that the band may be quickly applied and removed. The invention also consists in the combination, with a band constructed as aforesaid, of a screw for firmly holding the parts in position.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a circular band, from which project and to which are secured the series of arms B, on which the shade is immediately supported. This band is designed to be placed around the collar of a lamp, gas pipe, or burner, or other proper portion ofan illuminating apparatus to which the shade is tobe applied, and is constructed in sections A A. The ends of one section are bent at angles d, and the ends of the other sections bent at double angles, preferably of U or V shape, to form ways or grooves c.
It will be seen that, when the section A is placed ,in position on the illuminating apparatus, the other section A must be so elevated that its angles will enter the ways of the section A, and byidepressing the section A to full extent the two sections are imme.
diately connected and locked, and will remain snugly on the collar or rest on the top portion of the lamp, whereby the holder is nicely held in position.
To remove the band it is only necessary to lift one section from the other section, where by the angles d clear the ways 6, and the sections are immediately disengaged.
In order to fully tighten the two-part band, or in case where the band is larger than the part it encircles, a screw, 0, is fitted in one section, and by rotation presses against the collar or adjacent portion of the article which the band A encircles, so that, while one section is drawn against the collar and the other section away therefrom, the screw takes the place of the latter section in bearing against the collar, and consequently tightens and holds the parts.
Hayin g now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The sections A and A, with their lockin g-joints constructed of the angles d and ways 0, adapted to be connected and disengaged, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. The combination, with the sections A and A and their joints (1 e, of the screw 0, applied and operating substantially as described.
The above signed by me this 15th day of.
November, 1872. p
