L. H. SVOBODI FAN.

LADIMIR H. SVOBODA, F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
FAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
`Application led October v2, 1918: Serial No. 256,569.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LADIMIR H. SvooDA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and y useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fans.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a portable fan including a casing which provides both a handle for manipulating the and a housing for containing the operating means for driving the fan blade at one end of the casing.
Another object of the invention is to con struct the casing or handle in sections so that the battery and motor forming the driving means for the fan blades and positioned within the casing will be readily accessible for inspection.
A. still further object of the invention resides in the novel formation of the fan blades and in the manner of removably mounting the same upon the motor shaft.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide supporting members upon the casing which are adapted to receive and hold the fan blades when the latter are removed from the-motor shaft.
A still further object of the invention resides in the specific construction, combination and arrangement of parts whereby the device is rendered practical and eflicient for the purpose for which it is designed and is capable of being disassembled to permit inspection or replacing of parts.
Other objects of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description and drawings wherein I have illustrated the invention in its preferred embodi ment and in which drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a fan constructed in accord ance with my invention. f
Fig. 2 is a view looking at the fan blades from the rear thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail showing the blade receive -ing end of the motor shaft.
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the manner of removably securing ythe fanblades upon the motor shaft.
Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of the casing showing the arrangement of the supporting clips for holding the fan blade, when not in use.
Fig. 6 is a view taken on the line 6%-6 of Fig. 5, and
F 1g. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a detail view of thev connection between the fan blades.
The casing or handle portion of my improved fan is made up of two main sections indicated respectively by the numerals 1 and 2. The rear end of the section 2 is open and is received in the open forward end of the section. 1 being secured therein by means of 'the screws 3 passing through both of said sections as indicated. rllhe rear end of the section 1 is also open and is exteriorly threaded as indicated at 4 'to receive a threaded closure cap 5. rEhe forward end of the section 2 is also closed and is equipped with an in tegral hood 6 which is adapted to partly incluse the fan blades as will be later set forth.'
lvlithin the casing 1 is positioned a battery 7, having its forward end abutting stop lugs 8 integral with the inner wall of the casing and its rear end engaged by a spring 9 carried by the cap 5 and serving to retain the forward end of the battery engaged with said stop lug. This battery is electrically connected as shown with a motor 10 carried within the section 2. This motor and battery may be of any conventional form suit able for the purpose and in the circuit con necting the same is included a suitable electrical switch comprising the spaced contacts 11 and 12 secured upon the casing as indicated in Fig. 1.
The motor shaft indicated at 13, is extended through the forward wall of the section 2 and upon the extended end of this shaft is mounted the fan blades 111 and 15.
The blade receiving end of this shaft as shown in Fig. 3 is reduced and squared as indicated at 16 and is provided with opposite side grooves 17. The fan blades preferably two in number are extended at right angles to one another in operative position and are `provided intermediate their ends with reg istering openings to receive the squared end of the shaft as in Fig. 2. To assist in maintaining these blades in proper angular position with respect to one another I provide other for engagement with the correspond ingly positioned links l@ carried by the blade 14. The free end oi these links i8 and 19 overlap and aresecnred by pivot pins 20. As more clearly shown in S, each ot the linlrs 19 is provided upon opposite sides ot the pivot pin 29 ivith conical projections 2l which are engageable: with corresiiaondingly shaped sockets or recesses 22 termed in the links 18. These conical proiections when received in the sockets provided therefor maintain the linlrs in extended position and thus aid in the blades at right angles to one another. As shown in Fig. 2, these links may be readily moved 'from en tended position to permit the ian blades to lie in engagement throughout their entire length.
@noot the blades preferably the blade 14 in the present instance is equipped with a hook 23 having one end thereoi pivotally secured to the forward tace of the blade as indicated at and having the opposite hooked end thereof provided with a lateral extension 2o forming a nger piece. When the 'lian-blades are arranged in proper angular position by means ot the links 18 and 19 and slipped upon the reduced squared end of the sha-it i3, this hooh is then engaged Withrthe groove l? to prevent accidental removal or the blade. When it is desired to remove the blades, however, it is merely necessary to grasp the linger piece 25 and to swing the hoolr out of engagement With the groove l?. The blades may then be readily removed and by forcing the links 18 and 19 from extended position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. EZ the blades may be caused to lie dat upon one another throughout their length, thus occupying a minimum amount or space.
To receive the blades when folded and not in use, l have provided a pair oi clip members 25 and 26 secured to one side oi the casing adjacent'oeposite ends thereoin as indicated in Fig. 5. rlhese clip' members as more clearly indicated in Fig. 6 are preierably ll-shanedin coniignration, with the inner rims thereof riveted to the casing as indicated at 27.
From the foregoing it will be seen that l have provided a practical and convenient form of portable ian and it will be understood in this connection that the hood 6 maybe omitted ir desired so that the handle .casing may be readily received in the pocket of the user when the fan blades are detached from the motor shaft and engaged with the holding,` clips prei 'ded therefor.
Vln practice, alter the motor and battery have been positioned in the sect-ions i? and l respectively, these sections are connect-ed together by the screws 3. The 5 is then i ,teveel are then collapsed as indicated by dotted line in lig. 2 and are inserted in the holding clips 25 and 26. The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to What might be considered to be the preferred or approved torna of my invention. l desire it to be understood that l may make such changes KVin the construction, combination and arrangement or parte, materials, dimensions et cetera as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope or the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' l. ln a portable .-an, the combination `with a rotatable shaft having an end thereot reduced and provided With oppositely arranged grooves, ot a plurality ot tan blades slidably received on the reduced end ot said shaft, and a hook member carried by one o" said blades and engageable with said grooves to retain the said blades 1n position.
2. ln a `tan, the combination With a rotatable sha-lt havinq a reduced squared end, oi a pair oi ian 'ola-des centered on the squared end of the shaft and crossing each other :to provide `vertical and horizontal blades, a collapsible link pivotedA at its ends 'tion a rotatable shaft, separate fan blades removably monnted upon said shaft and eX- tending' at right angles to each other, col-y lapsible linlrs extending from each blade, on one side thereof and pivotally connected with the adjacent blade, and means for relll? tainingl the linhs rigid so that the linked blades may be retained in the proper relative position during 'the operation thereoi1 Yln testimony Whereol2 l' ax my signature in presence oi two nesses.
