Description

W. PATTERSON.
CLOTHESPIN.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.19,1918.
Pabnted Oct. 26, 1920.
a z m 7 a 6 w 9 H M Ma ,2 Y. 7 2m 9 5 9 I 51144.:a14AZ0t Patter 6071/ UNITED STATES WILLIAM PATTERSON, OF WINCHESTER, ILLINOIS.
CLOTHESPIN'.
Application filed August 19, 1918. Serial No. 250,528.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residin at Winchester, in the county of Scott and Sftate of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothespins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes pins, the object of the invention being to provide an improved clothes pin which is extremely durable and which can be readily manufactured at slight cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a clothes pin constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same. i
7 My improvedclothes pin comprises a pair of substantially semi-tubular members 1, which are made of thin sheet metal preferably tin, and each of which is formed at opposite sides and at a point intermediate its ends with lugs 2. Each member has a jaw 3 at one end and an arm 4 at the opposite end and the arms of the members are slightly curved so that they diverge out coiled portion 8 which is arranged around the pivoting pin and has arms which bear against the inner sides of the arms of the members 1. A pair of gripping members 9 which are made of wood are arranged in the jaws of the members 1 and secured thereto as by means of rivets 10. The gripping members have coengaging serrations 11 in their opposing sides to firmly grip the clothes and are also provided'with transverse grooves 13 for the passage of the clothes line. The spring serves to normally close the j aw and to hold the gripping mem bers firmly engaged with the clothes and on the line, as will be understood. Thewooden gripping members project beyond the inner sides of the sheet metal semi-tubular members 1 prevent said sheet metal members from coming in contact with the line or the clothes, and hence prevent or the clothes by rust.
My improved clothes pin is extremely strong and durable and may be readily manufactured at slight cost.
Having thus described my invention, I claim r A clothes pin comprising a pair ofmembers of concavo-convex cross-sectional shape, arranged with their concaved sides opposed and provided at a point intermediate their Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 26, 1920. 4
injury to the line 1 ends with lugs at opposite sides, a pivot pin" extending through openings in the lugs and pivotally connecting the members together,
gripping blocks secured within the concavedsides of the members and extending beyond the side edges thereof, said gripping blocks being provided upon their opposed faces with interengaging teeth or serrations extending across the width of the block and having a substantially semi-tubular recess located adjacent the pivotal connection to provide a clothes line grip and a spring for normally holding the teeth or serrations in.
gripping or engaged position. I V In testimony whereof I fi X my Signature.
WILLIAM PATTERSON.
