STARTING-MAGNET() FOR INTERNAL-GQMBUSTICN ENGINES.
latcnted ct. 26, 92()0 Application filed January 29, 1918. Serial No. 214,328..
TovaZZ whom t may concern.
Be it known that l. ALBERT HENRY Mioc- Lnr, a subject oi' the King of Great Britain and ireland, and residing at Varple lVay, Acton Vale, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements` in and Relating to Starting-Magnetos for `Internal-Combustion Engines, oi' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved electric starter for internal combustion engines oi' the kind in which the magneto is employedA as the starter.
The object of the invention is to providesite to that Where the driving gear is arf ranged.
It is also known in connection with magnetos to' arrange the distributer at one end and the circuit breaker and one member of the gear by which the magneto is opera-- tivel7 connected with the engiine at the other end thereof. In such known arrangement, however, the circuit. breaker is mounted between the armature and the' gear, which does not permit of a standard circuit i breaker being used.
The starting magneto constructed according to the present., invention, has the distributer mounted at the one end of the armature shaft and the circuit breaker at the other end thereof, While the starting driv ing gear is arranged between the circuit breaker and the-armature for the purpose of being able to use a standard contact 'break'er and reduce the bulk of the machine.
vThe accompanying drawing illustrates, by Way of eggample, a sectional elevation of one form `of construction according to the invention; a is the armature of the magneto which is vprovided with a primary and secondary Winding and c respectively; d is the circuit breaker which is arranged at the end A of the machine; e is a distributor arranged at the end B of the machine and i `vprovided with a segment f which ijs connected to the high tension terminal g and is adapted -alternately to make contact. with two brushes it and z' connected. to the distributers or' the engine; j and is are the two members of a driving gear which isv arranged at the end' A of the machine between the armature a. and the circuit breaker' d; Z is a handle by means of which the driving gear is operated for starting purposes. m is a condenser.
The handle Z may be replaced .by other meansy for operating the driving gear, for instance, a` spring put under tension, and the driving gear j it may be repiaced by any other suitable gear. Having new described my invention, 'what I claim as new and desire to secure by" Letters Patent is y A starting magneto for internal combns tion engines, comprising an armature, an armature shaft, a circuit breaker arranged at one end oi' the armature shaft, a distributor mounted on the opposite end of the armature shaft and a gear arranged between 'the armature and circuit breaker for driving the armature shaft together with the circuit breaker and the distributor during the time it is desired to produce the initial sparking for starting purposes, as Set forth.
In testimony whereo I have signed my name to this specification.
ALBERT HENRY MIDGLEY.
