To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM THOMAS BELL and FRANCIS JAMEs BRETHER'ION, subjects of-the King of Great Britain, residing at Lincoln, Lngland, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Connection with Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of steam engines for motor vehicles and other purposes in which the connection of the crank shaft brackets and the cylinder is such that the expanding of the boiler does not alter the distance of the crank shaft from the cylinder or cylinders.
For the purpose of this invention we journal the crank shaft brackets to the boiler so that the crank shaft brackets can rock and adjust themselves with regard to the cylinder at varying degrees of heat, whereby any expanding of the boiler will not interfere with or alter the distance of the crank shaft from the cylinders.
When a locomotive type of boiler is used a cross shaft is inserted through the boiler, a crank shaft to the engine is carried in brackets that are journaled on the cross shaft and the crank shaft brackets are kept at constant position in relation to the cylinder by stays connected with the cylinder or other part of the engine.
Our invention will be clearly understood from the following description aided by the annexed drawings in which- Figure l is a part sectional elevation of a portion of a boiler showing the cross shaft bracket, crank shaft and gear connected between the crank shaft and cross` shaft.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of a boiler, chassis and cylinder and showing the cross shaft brackets crank shaft and a stay.
According to the construction shown A is theicross shaft positioned within a tubular bearing B which is secured to the boiler C inside of same at the rear end, the cross shaft A projecting at each end outside the boiler. I
On these projecting ends of the cross shaft A on each side of the boiler are journaled brackets D, D the upper ends of which are provided with bearings E, E which carry the crank shaft F and the brackets D,
D are each connected by stays or rods G to the engine cylinder H.
The cross shaft A is carried on each side in bearings I secured to the chassis or frame J and such cross shaft A and crank shaft F are or may be connected by gearing K and the crank shaft may also carry the fly wheel L the gearing being employed for propulsion, speed reduction and other purposes.
The drawings only show the chassis and cross shaft being on one side but it must be understood that these elements are positioned on both sides of the boiler.
The boiler at the front end is secured to the chassis as is usual.
IVhat we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In steam engines, the combination with the boiler, of brackets pivotally supported thereon, a crank shaft mounted in said brackets, an engine cylinder, and connections between said brackets and the engine cylinder whereby the distance of said crank shaft from the engine cylinder remains constant irrespective of the expansion of the boiler.
2. Insteam engines, for vehicles having a locomotive type of boiler, the combination of a cross shaft passing through the boiler, bearings on the frame of the vehicle for supporting said shaft, brackets journaled on said shaft, a crank shaft mounted in said brackets, an engine cylinder mounted in the vehicle frame and stays connecting the brackets with the cylinder whereby the e);- pansion of the boiler does not alter the distance between said crank shaft and engine cylinder.
3. In steam engines for vehicles having a locomotive type of boiler, the combination of a tube passing through the boiler, a cross shaft passing through said tube and having bearings on the frame of the vehicle, brackets journaled on the cross shaft adjacent the boiler, a crank shaft rotatably mounted in said brackets, an engine cylinder mounted in the vehicle frame and stays connecting the brackets with said cylinder whereby the eX- pansion of the boiler is unable to alter the distance between said crank shaft and engine cylinder.
