UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NORMAN J. MOONEY, OF SAN FRANGIS'CO, CALIFORNIA. I
TOBACCO-PIPE.
/ Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1920.
Application filed November 11, 1916, Serial No. 130,790. Renewed September 15, 1919. Serial No. 323,996.
T 0 all whom it may concerns I Be it known that'I, NORMAN J. MooNEY, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and Stateof Callfornla, have1nvented certain useful Improvements in Tobacco- Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.- r p The invention relates to pipes, and more particularly to the class of tobacco pipes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a pipe of this character wherein the bowl and stem thereof are made in separable sections, so that said bowl and stem can bereadily cleaned, and thereby eliminate nicotin frornfilling the channel in the stem and thus choking the same, which would impair the draft through the channel when the pipe is in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pipe ofthis character wherein the bowl and stem are of novel form, and
the said bowl carries a false bottom, thereby eliminating the possibility of the burning through of the bowl when thepipe is being smoked, and also assuring the cleansing of the pipe with despatch, both in the bowl thereof and its stem. I t
A further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe of this character wherein the separable parts thereof when assembled, will not only provide arigid structure, but will have the appearance of an ordinary one piece pipe, and the draft through the pipe will not be impaired through leakage of air between the separable sections of the bowl and stem.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe of this character wherein the mouth piece will prevent the separation of the sections of the bowl when said mouth piece is engaged in the stem, and upon the removal of the mouth piece the sections can be readily separated for the cleaning of the bowl and stem, and theremoval oi the false bottom from the bowl which facilitates the cleaning of the bowl and said false bottom, and avoids the charring or burning of the bowl through the bottom thereof.
A. still further object of the invention is ing the bowl. 5 i
The open bottom end of the body lO, consembled or disassembled, strong, durable,
and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention willjbe more fully described, il1ustrated in the accompanying drawing, and speclfically pointed outin theclaims which are attached hereto, and form a part ofthis 7 application.
sectional Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the bowl and stem with the separable section removed.- 1
Fig. 6 is a plan View or the separable section. I 1
Similar reference characters indieatecorresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the toibacco pipe comprises a body, 1 0, which con-- stitutes the bowl proper and has formed therewith a portion 11 ofthe stem, the other portion 12 of which is integral with a separable bottom 13 for the body 10, constitutstituting the bowl and the portion 1101: the stem, is formed with a dove tail shaped groove 14, which extends longitudinally of said stem, while formed on the portion 12 and the bottom 13 is a dovetail shaped rib 15, corresponding to the groove 14, to be detachably received therein, and in this manner the bottom 13 and portion 12 are detachably locked with the body 10 to the portion 11 and this is efi'ected on the sliding of the rib 15 into the groove 14;, through either end thereof.
The portions 11 and 12 of the stem are channeled at 16 to provide the draft passagelongitudinally through the stem, which communicates with the body'10 interiorly' thereof. V
The passage at the outer free end of the stem is enlarged and formed with internal threads 17 for detachably receiving a threaded nipple 18, which is slightly larger than:
the enlarged threaded portion of the passage, so as to spread the portions 11 and 12 on the engagement of the nipple 18 in the enlarged portion of the passage to firmly clamp'thereon a ring or sleeve 19, which is telescoped upon thev free end of the stem,
Removably ntted in the open end of the body 10 is a false bottom 22, which is of substantiallyqcup shape, and this bottom is received in a seat 23 therefor, provided interio'rly vin the body 10, the bottom 22 in its periphery being provided with a lug 24:, which is received in a notch 25 in the wall of the seat 28, so as to prevent rotation of the false bottom when held within the seat, and also to assure the registration of the opening 26 in said false bottom 22 with the passage in the stem, so that direct draft will be had through the stem and mouthpiece from the body 10 of the pipe.
On the removal of the mouth piece from the stem of the pipe, the bottom 13 and the portion 12 can be separated from the body and portion 11, which portions 11 and 12 'constitute the stem, and thus the false bottom 22 can be removed from the body 10, so that both the body and'the stem can be readily cleaned with despatch, and likewise the false bottom cleaned.
The pipe, with the separable parts, can be readily assembled and disassembled in a convenient manner. a
on the engagement of the nipple 18 in the free end of the stem, the sleeve 19 will bind upon the portions 11 and 12, as said-portions I are slightly spread, and in this manner the separable sections of the body and stem will passage in the stem be firmly locked together without possibility of the leakage of air from the draft passage on the smoking of the pipe, nor will there be any possibility of the separation of the parts of the pipe while in use, and in the act of smoking the same.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of assembling and disassembling of the parts of the pipe will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A device of the character described ineluding a body forming the walls of a bowl and provided with a seat at its lower end and also having a stem portion leading there from, a bottom for the body having a stem portion leading therefrom, means for securing the body and its stem and the bottom and its stem in detachable engagement, and a false bottom positioned entirely within the body and removably -held against the seat and supported by the bottom.
2. A device of the character described including a body forming the walls of a bowl and provided at its lower open end with a seat and having a stem portion leading therefrom, a bottom for the body having a stem portion leading therefrom, the stem portions being provided with a smoke passage, the bottom and its stem portion being provided with a groove, a rib formed on the bottom and its stem portion for detachable interlocking engagement with the groove,
a false bottom for the body removably held against the seat and supported by the bottom and further provided with an opening for registration with the smoke passage in the stem portions, and cooperative means formed on the false bottom and in the seat for preventingrotary movement of the false bottom.,
.In' testimony whereof. I affix my signaturc.
