INVENTOR .1374

SAW sn'r. AND GAGE;
- Application and April 25,
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN Bonnnrs,
a subject of the King of Great Britain, re-
' siding at Lake Saskatoon, in the Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improve-j ments in Saw Sets and Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to tools, and particularly to instruments adapted to be 11. ed in the repair or setting of saws, aiming primarily to provide a combined saw-set and gage, improved means for holding a file to operate upon the saw teeth in the adjusting or trying of the latter, im proved means for gaging raker teeth, as well as the embodiment of other elements for performing different functions.
further object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character wherein a pair ofpivoted handle or jaw members are employed, the said handle members being provided with cooperating serrated faces to'e'lfect a pipe or nut gripping in strument, and means on one of the handles whereby bolt threads may be cleaned or trued. U
A still further object of the .inventionis toprovide a tool or implement of this char acter, which is simple in construction, which, is inexpensive in manufacture, which is composed of few readily assembled parts,
the said parts being so arranged and con-.5
nected as to provide a powerful instrument and one which will not readily becomebroken or damaged and which will prove thoroughly eflicient in performing the functions for which it is designed.
Vith these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, therein Figure 1 is an end view of a tool constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool and Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 19, 1920;

illustrating the same when usedas a saw Referring more'particularly to the draw I ings, and 6 represent a handle or jaw por-. tions employed 1n carrying the invention into effect' The handle portion 5 is formed at one" end to provide an angular portion 7 the latter being bifurcated as shown,and it the space between the furcation's extending inwardly from the adjacent handle. end. The opposite or cooperating handle member 6i s provided at one extremity with a disk or hammer portion 8, the latter being pivoted eccentrically as at ,9 between the furcations ofthe angularly extending portion 7 of the handle 5. This hammer 8 is of substantially' the same thickness at its point of pivotal connection with the member 5v as the distance between the furcations thereof,
annular edge so that the thickness of the hammer is materially reduced. The handlev 6, when swung inwardly will rock upon the pivot 9 and the hammer 8 will move 1n-v wardly int-o closelproximity to the straight portion of the handle member 5;
while its sides taper toward the outer An anvil 10' is extended through the I slotted or bifurcated end of the handlepoi tion 5, and consists ofa set screw which is provided with looking nuts 11 to maintain the said set screw in adjusted position within' the said slotted end. The inner extremity of the anvil is: adapted to impinge a sawfblade during the setting operation of the tool to hold the latter while the hammer.
8 operates to properly incline or set the teeth thereof. A gage screw 12 extends througha suitlble opening formed in the handle 6 substantially intermediate the ends of the latter. This gage screw is also pros vided with looking nuts 13, the arrangement enabling the gage screw to be readily adjusted through the said handle in amanner similar to that of the anvil 10. The gage screw 12 is adapted to be adjusted in such a manner as to bear against the outer or metal portion of the saw blade when the tool is adjusted to the saw to position the tance as the same is out tool properly prior to the setting operation of the same.
By inclining the side faces of the disk portion 8 to present a relatively narrow outer edge, it is apparent that the device is capable of being readily used upon saws having teeth varying in width.
The inner face of the handle member 6 is notched at 14 adjacent the juncture of the hammer 8 with the handle member. This notch provides angular walls, the latter being spaced apart a distance sufficient to accommodate the edge of the ordinary fiat file. hen a file is placed within the grooves and the handles 5 and 6 swung together, the said file will be firmly maintained in proper po-' sition to be passed over the teeth of a saw to properly aline the cutting ends or apices thereof. The file may, moved when required but during the filing operation, the said file will be firmly held in proper position.
In order that the tool may be efiiciently used with various types of saws, the handle 6 is bent at one edge to provide a longitudinally disposed channel or groove 15, the said groove being of a width sufiioient to accommodate relatively heavy saws. This groove extends throughout substantially one half the length of the handle portion 6 and the said handle is cut away at its turned edge to provide a slot 16 communicating with the interior of the channel 15. Intruing and sharpening saws of the raker type, the handle 6 of the tool is positioned over the saw teeth with the raker teeth projecting through the slot 16. As the cutting teeth upon each side of the raker tooth engage with the bottom of the channel 15, the said raker tooth will he alined with the slot, and will intrude through the same such disof cutting alinement with the cutting teeth of the saw. Itis thus seen that an effective for evening the raker teeth is provided. The extremity of the handle member 6 may be pointed or flattened as at 17 to provide a screw driver.
The opposite handle 5 has arranged therein, a pluralitv of internally threaded openings 18, the'latter varying in diameter, and are adapted to be used to clean and even the threads or screw bolts by rotating the latter in said openings.
7 have provided a tool which is with facility, be re The free extremity of the handle member 5 is crotched to provide a tack lifter or puller 19.
To enable the tool to be used as a pipe or nut wrench, the adjacent faces of the handle members 5 and 6 are serrated as shown and provide gripping teeth 20, the latter being relatively sharp to insure a firm grip upon the material with which the device is used.
It is obvious from this description that I of extremely simple inexpensive construction, and which may be efiiciently used in the performing of a number of functions. The readiness with which the various parts of. the device may be adjusted enables the tool to be readily adapted to its various uses.
While the above is a description of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is apparent that various changes in the minor details of construction and arrange ment of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the claims.
Vhat is claimed is 1. A saw set and gage including two handles one of which has its working end turned at right angles and slotted, a screw arranged through said handle and projecting beyond the walls thereof to provide an anvil, the opposite handle having its working end flattened and eccentrically pivoted in the slotted end of the opposite handle to capacitate as a hammer to impinge the saw teeth and force them against the anvil.
2. A saw set and gage including a pair of handles one of which has its working end turned at right angles, a screw arranged through said handle and projecting beyond the walls thereof to provide an anvil, the opposite handle having its working end fiattened and eccentrically pivoted in the right angle portion of the opposite handle to capacitate as a hammer for coaction with the anvil, and a screw arranged intermediately in one of the handles to impinge the saw blade and operate as a gage.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN ROBERTS.
