Be it known that l, TrroMAs H. Lnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Pipe-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water tube boil ers; and its object is the improvement of boilers of this character to render the same more efhcient.
The invention consists in the novel con struction, adaptation and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a steam generator embodying my improvement, the containing case being shown` ,insection Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of Fig. 1.
The reference numeral 5 designates ak water drum, and 6 a steam drum arranged transversely of the boiler at different elevations and at the rear and front, respectively, of the boiler casing 7. The water drum 5 is connected at its ends by fittings 8 with the lower ends of upright pipes 9, hereinafter designated as downflow pipes, whose upper ends are connected by elbow fittings 10 with the ends of a horizontal pipe, or manifold, 11 located at a short distance below the level of the top of the casing.
Connected to and extending through the rear and front walls of the casing and the chamber inclosed thereby is a plurality of substantially horizontal headers 12 whose forward ends are connected by elbows 18 and nipples 181 with the bottom of the steam drum 6. Also connected to said water drum 5 are forwardly directed nipples 14 severally connected interiorly of the casing by elbows 15 with vertical pipes orheaders 16 located in proximity to the rear wall 71 of said casing and terminating at a distance below the horizontal row of horizontal headers 12, there being one vertical header 16 under each of the latter. For'each pair of headers 12 and 16 is provided a series of L-shaped steam generating members comprising upright tube elements 17, 171. 172, etc., connected to and depending from the respective headers 12 and substantially horizontal tube elements 181, 182, 183, etc., connecting the lower ends of the aforesaid tubes with the respective vertical headers 16.

In operation, the water level is maintained to approximately aplane V-L (Fig. 2) extending through the row of headers 12. The heat produced within the furnace acts to generate steam in the tube members 17-181, 171-182, 172-183, etc., to flow accompanied by a quantity of water impelled by the momentum of the steam and the reduction in the specific gravity of the heated Water into the respective headers 12, wheren in the steam separates from the water to escape through nipples 181 into the steam drum, while the water flows rearwardly into the manifold 11. rlhe water from the latter descends through pipes 9 into the water drum 5 whence it returns through nipples 14 and headers 16 to the generating members to replace the ascending bodies of water and steam therein and complete the circulation of the water.
The losses due to evaporation are replaced by feed water introduced, for example, through a pipe 24 leading into the water drum 5.
According to the present invention, the course of the generated steam and water is upward inthe generating tubes and headers 16'within the boiler casing, the steam sepyarating in the headers 12 and the remaining water descends through downflow pipes 9 exteriorly of the casing to the water drum.
By such devices, the circulation of the water is promoted by reason of the difference between the temperatures obtaining inside and outside of the casing.
Vhat I claim, is-
1. lIn a steam boiler, the combination with the steam and waterA drums, of a manifold,
a series of horizontal headers connected at their opposite ends to the steam drum and to saidmanifold, water downflow pipe connections between said manifold and water drum, a series of vertical headers connected at their lower ends to said water drum and separated from said downflow pipe connections, said vertical headers having their upper ends terminating at a distance below said horizontal headers, and steam generating tubes connecting said vertical headers with said horizontal headers.
2. In a steam boiler, a steam drum, a.
Water drum, horizontal headers connected at one end of each to said steam drum, water downflow pipes between the other ends of the aforesaid headers and the water drum, a series of vertical headers separated at said downlow pipes, connections between the lower ends of said vertical headers and said water drum, and series of horizontally and vertically arranged steam generating tubes making the only connections between the Vertical and horizontal headers.
3. In a steam boiler, the combination of a boiler easing, a steam drum and a water drum disposed exteriorly of the easing, a series of horizontal headers and a series of Vertical headers disposed interiorly of said casingand in spaced relation to each other, said horizontal headers being,` connected at one end of each with the steam drum, said vertical headers being` connected at one end of each with said water-drum, steam generating tubes all'ording the only direct connections between said horizontal and Vertical headers, a manifold pipe connecting the ends of the horizontal headers remote from the steam drum, and water downflow pipes disposed exteriorly of the casing and connecting' said manifold with said water drum.
