To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL SHEPELE- VICH, a citizen of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented ccrtaln new and useful Improvements in Renewable Heels, of which the following is a speclfication.

This invention relates to heels for boots and shoes having particular reference to a heel in which a renewable tread member may be readily attached on a mounting formlng a permanent part of the boot or shoe.

The invention has for an object to provide a simple and inexpensive arrangement whereby such tread member may be readily attached to or detached from the boot or shoe and which will cause the tread member to be securely locked in position.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim 1n wh ch the various novel features of the inventlon are more particularly set forth.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a group perspective view showing the varlous parts making up the invention separated from'one another.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view showing the said parts assembled.

Fig. 3 is a similar View to Fig. 2 but showing the detachable tread member in position ready to be moved forward onto the permanent mounting.

Fig. 4 is a side view showing the parts 1n the same position as Fig. 3.

In the drawings 10 indicates the sole of an ordinary shoe which as is usual extends as at 11. over the heel. My improved heel mounting comprises a pair of metal plates 12 and 13 clamped upon the top and bottom faces respectively of this heel portion 11, the bottom plate 13 having fixed to its underside a U-shaped frame member 14, the space within. said member inclosing the locking device, the end of the plate 13 being turned down across the front end of the frame member as at 15. This member has a peripheral groove 16 extending around the rear end and sides thereof to receive a complementary part on the detached member, as will be presently set fortht. The plates'12 and 13 and frame 14 may be secured to one another and to the sole part 11 by screws or rivets 17 passing therethrough.

The detachable member consists of a tread element 20 which may be made of rubber, leather or other suitable material, and which has hxed to the upper face thereof, a metal plate 21 which has in turn fixed thereon a U-shaped frame member 22 of a size to inclose the fixed frame member 14 and having an. interior horizontal flange 23 extending around the rear end and two sides thereof and adapted to engage in the peripheral groove 16 in the frame member 14. Fixed upon the top face of the metal plate 21 is a sprlng detent 25 consisting of a flat metal strip secured at its rear end to the rear edge of the plate 21 and normally inclining forwardly and upwardly, this strip being bent ad acent its front end to form a transverse recess 26 on its upper face, the extreme end of the detent being in the form of a downwardly curving lip 27.

Extending across the underside of the metal plate 13 toward the front end thereof is a rib 28 which rib is adapted to engage in the recess 26 in the detent 25 to lock the detachable member in place, the bottom of the rib being spaced from the plate 21 so as to allow the end of the detent to pass thereunder. Cooperating with the rib 28 in holding the detent 25, and through it the detachable member of the heel, in lace is a stud 30 on the underside of the p ate a short dis tance to the rear of the rib, which stud is adapted to project into an aperture 31 in the detent. To accommodate the detent the rear end of the frame member 14.- is recessed on its underside as at 32.

To permit of removal of the detachable member the detent 25 is adapted to be depressed to disengage the rib 28 from the recess 26 by a key 34 which is inserted in suitable apertures 35 and 36 in the downturned end 15 of the plate 13 and in an interior transverse wall a short distance to the rear of said downturned end, the key havforward the front end of the detent 25 is ing a notch 37 whose end walls project 27 (permitting the endof the detent to snap un er the stud 30 and rib 28, the recess 26- in the detent coming into uxtaposition with the rib 28 when the detae able member has been moved completely forward with the flange 27 engaging in the groove 15 both at front and sides. It will thus be apparent that the detachable member is securely fixed upon the permanent mounting.

To remove the detachable member the key 34 'is inserted throu 'h the openings 35 and 36 with the flat blade thereof horizontal until the lug 38 projects over the lip 27 The key is then turned depressing the li 27 below the rib 28 so that the detachab e member may be removed by a rearward pressure thereon.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent of the United States is- A heel for shoes comprising a permanent mounting consisting of a top plate and a frame, of U-shape under said top plate, a

detachable element having a U-shaped element adapted to inclose said permanent mounting, interlocking groove and flange devices extendin around the sides and rear of said U-shaped frame, and element, and a detent strap secured at one end to the rear end of said detachable member and extending forwardly and upwardly between the legs of the U-shaped frame, said detent being formed to present atransverse recess adjacent its front end and havin its front end in the form of a downwar'ly curved lip, a rib upon the permanent mounting adapted to engage in the said recess, and a stud upon the underside of the said top plate to the rear of said rib adapted to engage in an aperture in said detent,ithe said permanent mounting presenting a pair of longitudinally spaced transverse walls at its front end having apertures therein for the insertion of a key.
