CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GENTRIFUGAL FAN.
Application filed August 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST MATHIs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of centrifugal air movers or blowers having a blower wheel of the peripherally bladed type, and has for its object To provide a simple and efficient structural formation and association of parts in a blower wheel of the above mentioned type, adapted to afford a strong and substantial connection between thebladed rim portion and the hub portion of the wheel leaving a practically unobstructed central chamber for the incoming airand capable of convenient and effective adjustment to attain perfect concentricity of the wheel rim in relation to the axis of revolution, all as will hereinafter more fully appear. In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1,- is a side elevation with parts broken away and in section of a blower wheel embodying the preferred form of the present invention.
Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional elevation of the same.
Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail sectional elevation of the wheel hub and associated parts.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail end elevation of the same.
Fig. 5, is an enlarged detail side elevation of an end portion of the wheel hub.
Fig. 6, is an elevation of one of the spokes of the blower wheel.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
As represented in the drawings the bladed rim member of the blower wheel is Specification of Letters Patent.

tion or shell 6, the respective ends of which overhang the respective webs 5 and are formed with open ended slots 7 for the reception of the ends of the hereinafter described structural metal spokes of the blower wheel.
In the preferred form of the hub, the open ended slots 7 are arranged in pairs tangentially inclined in opposite directions and with one slot of the pair having a greater length than the other, so that the crossed spoke ends of the present structure may pass each other without interference. Inner abutment faces 8 for the at taching nuts of the spokes are formed in right-angle relation to the slots 7 as shown more particularly in Fig. 4.
9 designates disks fitting the annular end portion 4 of the hub aforesaid, and adapted to close the end cavities of the hub formed by the overhanging end portions of the rim or shell 6 and in which the at taching nuts of the wheel spokes are contained.
1O designates the series of spokes connecting the rim and hub members of the wheel together, and which in the present inven tion are of the V form shown in Figs. 2 and 6, and formed of rod or like structural metal, with the apex of each spoke adapted to engage in a transverse orifice in the central annular ring 1 aforesaid, and with the respective ends of the spoke screw-threaded to receive the attaching nuts 11 by which the spokes are tensioned and adjusted in a convenient and efficient manner to properly center the hub member in relation to the bladed rim member of the blower wheel.
Vith the present construction each V shaped spoke member constitutes two individual spokes of the blower wheel, with the longitudinal spread of said spokes extending to opposite ends of the hub member to provide the required transverse rigidity to the blower while in actual use.
In the preferred arrangement of the spokes 10 as shown in the drawings, the
,same will have the usual tangential and crossed relation, yet any other usual and ordinary arrangement may be employed if found desirable in special uses of the blower wheel.
In all cases the respective forks of each V shape spoke 10 will be on a common plane, so that in the tensioning operation of the nuts 11 an accurate, rapid and effective tainment of the desired balance or center? ing of the wheel rim with relation to the axis of rotation is secured, without causing distortion or buckling of the rim portion of the wheel. Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a blower Wheel, the combination of a rimimember formed by a central ring of plate metal and a peripheral series of attached blower blades, a hub member having substantially as set forth.
2. In a blower wheel, the combination of a rim member formed by a' central ring of plate metal and aperipheral series of attached blower blades, a hub memberhaving overhanging end portions formed with open ended receiving slots, a series of connecting spokes of a V form, the apex of which has engagement in orifices in the aforesaid ring and the inner ends of which spokes pass through the aforesaid slots, and adjusting nuts engaging said inner ends of the spokes and adapted to tension and balance the fan parts, substantially as set forth.
3. I11 a blower wheel, the combination of a rim member formed by a central ring of plate metal and a peripheral series of attached blower blades, a hub member having overhanging. end portions formedwith open ended receiving slots having different lengths and oppositely inclined relation, a
series of connecting spokes of a V form, the
apex of which has engagement in orifices said inner ends of the spokes and adapted to tension and balance the fanparts, substantially as set forth.
4. In a blower wheel, the combination of a rim member formed by a central ring of plate metal and a peripheral series of attached blower blades, a hub member having overhanging end portions formed with receiving slots, a series of connecting spokes of a V form, the apex of which has engagement in orifices in the aforesaid ring and the inner ends of which spokes pass through the aforesaid slots, adjusting nuts engaging said inner ends of the spokes and, adapted to tension and balance the fan parts, and closure plates fitting the ends of the overhanging end portions of the hub member substantially as set forth.
5. In a blower wheel, the combination of a rim member formed by a central ring of plate metal and a peripheral series of attached blower blades, a hub member having overhan ing end portions formed with open ended receiving slots having different lengths and oppositely inclined relation, the inner surfaces of said overhanging portions having abutment faces in right-angle relation to said receiving slots, a series of connecting-spokes of a V form, the apex of which has engagement in orifices in the aforesaid ring and the inner ends of which spokes pass through the aforesaid slots, and adjusting nuts engaging said'inner ends of the spokes and adapted to tension and balance the fan parts, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 5th day ofAugust, 1919.
