' CHARLES J. LINDSTROM, or CLINTON, MISSOURI.
SAFETY-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed March 15, 1920. Serial No. 366,086.
T all whom it may, concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. LIND- sTRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of'Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards,
of which the following releasing device.
is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety devices and has for its object to provide a quick acting guard to protect bank clerks and others handling considerable money, from hold-up men.
Another object of the invention is to pro- .Vide means whereby a bank, or other cashier may protect himself from robbers and at the same time place himself shoot the would be robber. 7
With the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawi-ngsin which F igurel is asectional view of a cashiers cage embracing my invention.
Fig.2 is a similar view showing certain parts in changed position.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a modification of the device in the act of being sprung, certain parts being broken away.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of another modification, and
' "Fig. 5 is-a diagrammatic view of a spring Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the, following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a cashiers cage, having a'. front wall 2 in which is provided a window 3 above the desk 4, the inner part of the deskextending through the window to form a customers counter 5. Mounted under the desk and in alinement with the wall 2, is a tube 6, in which is seated a vcoil spring 7 upon the upper end of which is mounted an armour steel sheet 8 which is of a size to completely close the window 3. The upper edge 9 of plate 8 is provided with a strip of rubber or other suitable material '10 of a width and length to completely fit the counter-sink into the widened slot 11 in counter 5 through which the-plate 8 is adapted to pass and normally keep this slot closed, the
upper surface of said member 10 being to match the surface flush with and painted of the. counter 5. Normally the spring 7 is held under compression, as at 12, by
in position to means of a cross head 13 on the end of a horizontal rod 14, said member 13, operating hrough a horizontal slot 15, in the tube 6. The rod 14 operates between rollers 16 and 17 on the upper ends of the standards 18 and 19, and the roller 20 carried by the brace bar 21 which may be of strap iron, and which extends around upon itself. A similar bar 22 is also carried by the standards 18 and 19. -The outer end of the bar 14 has a spring 23 coiled therearound between said standard 19 and the pivot joint 24 connecting said bar 14 and a link 25. l/Vhen the bar 14 and its cross head 13 are shoved in to hold sprin 7 under compression, spring 23 is also he d under compression, the bar 14 being held in position of link 25 the ends of which bear between the pivot 24 of bar 14 and pivot 26 of bar 22. The link 25 is formed of two members connected by a hinge 27 against which a pin 28 normally rests, said pin projecting from the upper end 29 of a lever 30 mounted on the pivot 26, the lower end of this lever carrying a foot treadle 31. Any pressure upon the treadle or lower end of lever 30 will cause the pin 28 to break the link 25 and release spring 23 which will throw out rod 14, withdraw head 13 from the tube 6, release spring 7 which will instantly throw up plate 8 to close window 3, give the cashier a' chance to duck under desk 4, grab his pistol and attack any would be robber through an opening 32 in the wall 33 under the counter 5. Rod 14 carries an electric contact 34 which engages contact 35 on standard 18 closing a circuit which gives a general alarm that the bank is being attacked.
In Fig. 3 I ,show a modification in which the windows 36 and 37 of a pair of cages (paying tellers and receiving tellers) are simultaneously closed by the plate 38 which case is located between'the two cages and a wire 39 extends from near the foot of each teller across the lever '30 so that a slight pressure on said wire by the occupant of either cage will operate said lever 30 -to actuate the device.
In Fig. 4 a modification is shown in which the plate 40 is provided with side extensions 41 and 42. This is used in connection .ios
with grated cages, the wings 4:1 and 42 together with the central plate 40 will provide ample protection for the clerk while ducking to safety under the desk.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to pro- I cure by Letters Patent is:
