being provided for causing the exit of the gas at an angle with respect to the movement of the air whereby the discharging air will exert a sucking action on the gas which will to a great extent counter-act the pressure of the gas and consequently cause a short compact flame which will be intensely hot.
An important object is the provision of a 7 device of this character with which may be used pre-heated air under normal or higher pressure, as preferred.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eflicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the burner,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view,
Fig. 8 is an elevation of the tip member, and
Fig. i is a cross sectional view on the line 4-4: of Fig. 2. g
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a body which may be formed as a casting and which is provided internally with a partition 11 defining air and gas compartments 12 and 13, respectively. The body 10 is provided with holes 14 and 15 communicating respectively with the air and gas chambers 12 and 13.
At its sides the body 10 may be provided with lateral extensions 16 to provide securing means.
Threaded into a hole in one side of the body 10, this hole communicating with the chamber 12, is a cylindrical tube 17 and threaded into a hole-in thepartition ll and communicating with the chamber 13, is a pipe 18 which extends co-axially through the tube 17 and which terminates short of the outer end thereof. By this construction it will be seen that the annular space19 is provided betweenthe'tube 17 and pipe '18 and that this space communicates with the chamber 12. a i
Threaded upon the outer end of the pipe 18 is a tip 20 which has its outer end closed,
as shown at 21, and this outer closed end is provided with a circular series of holes 22 which are inclined at an angle of 45 with respect to the longitudinal axis of the 1nembers 17 and 18. These holes 22 are the gas discharge openings. Formed integrally around the inner periphery of the tip 20 are spirally arranged ribs or vanes 23 and the spaces between these ribs or vanes are for the passageof air. v
In the operation of the device it will be seen that when air and gas are supplied to the burner, the gas will pass through the pipe 18 and out throughthe holes 22 andv the air will pass through the annular-space 19 and between the ribs or vanes 23, the
air being given a whirling motion owing.
that I have thus provided a simple device of the character specified which consists of the minimum number of parts, which will therefore be inexpensive in manufacture, not liable to derangement, and which will yet perform all the functions for which 'it is intended.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of thesubj oined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: v
'1. A device of the character described comprising a body provided with air and gas chambers having inlet openings, a tubu lar member connected with said body and said closed end being provided with a plu rality of gas discharge holes and the outer periphery of said tip being provided with a plurality of spirally arranged ribs defining spiral passages through which the air passes, the'air being thereby given a circular motion. J
2. A device of the characterdescri-bed comprising a' body provided with air and gas chambers having inlet openings, a tubular member connected with said body and communicating with the air chamber therein, a pi e extendingconcentrically through said tu ular member and communicating with the gas chamber, and a tip on the end of said pipe having its outer end closed, said closed end. being provided with a plurality of gas discharge holes and the outer periphery of said tip being provided witha plurality of spirally arranged ribs defining spiral passages through which the air passes, the air being thereby given a whirling motion,'said gas discharge holes being at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the gas conducting pipe.
In testimony whereof I afiix'my si iature JAMES B
