CHIMNEY STACK OR GAP.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,520, dated September 4, 1855.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORTIMER M. CAMP, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of the metallic top, or improvement, of the chimney. Fig. 2, is a section of the same, cut vertically through the. center, showing the relative position of the several parts.

I make the lower part, A, of my improved chimney top of cast iron, or any other suitable material, substantially in the shape shown in Fig. l and indicated in section, in Fig. 2, making it of two parts, A, A, and B, B, so as to leave an inolosed space or air chamber between them, all as shown in Fig. 2, so that the cold air on the outside will not cool, or condense, the smoke before it arrives at the orifice, a, Fig. 2. And I make the part B, B, largest at the top, so that the smoke may have free egress. I make the cap, or upper part, C, of sheet iron, or any other suitable material, (and somewhat larger in diameter than the largest portion of the lower part, A.) And I make it flaring both ways, substantially, as shown in the drawings. To the inside of this part,

C, I attach a covering cap, or disk, D, some what larger than the orifice, (a, Fig. 2,) of the lower part, A, and sustains it in its proper position by rods, or braces, as seen at b, and 6, Figs. 1 and 2. And I support the flaring caps, C, C, on three, or more, rods or braces, as seen at 0, and 0, Figs. 1, and 2. So that all the parts will be of the relative proportions, and occupy the relative position, substantially, as shown in the drawings, when it will be ready to be attached to the chimney.

I attach the lower end, E, to the chimney, in any convenient way, by bringing the connecting extremities toacorresponding shape by any convenient means and securing them in a substantial manner.

I have found, by extensive experiment, and practice, that, when constructed 'and arranged, substantially as above described, the blowing of the wind will, in all cases, increase the draft of the chimney, and that without reference to which way it blows, or whether its tendency is upward or clownward, as the interposition of the disk, D, will cause the wind, or current of air, when deflected by the curved surfaces, to carry the smoke with it, upward, or downward, causing a partial vacuum at the orifice, a, Fig. 2, however much the chimney top may be shaded by surrounding buildings, or otherwise.

I do not claim, as my invention, either of the parts, as such, nor any two of them combined, but

The combination of three parts, (A, C, and 1),) when constructed, arranged, and combined, substantially, as herein described.
