GEORGE B. CASS, OF OTTAWA, OHIO.
VAPORIZER FOR CARBUBETERS.
Application Med January 28, 1919, Serial No. 273,602. Renewed January 13, 1920. Serial No. 351,251.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. GAss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers and Carburetors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carbureters and has special reference to a heating element for such carbureters.
One object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of thermo-electric heating coil for use in connection with such carbureters.
I/Vith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the device,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is provided a carbureter having a hollow elongated body 10 which is extended at one end to form a delivery tube 11 between which and the body proper is a diaphragm 12 having a central opening 13 therein. The end of the delivery tube is threaded as at 14 to connect the device to the manifold or cylinder of a gasolene engine while the end of the body is provided with means, as at 15, for connection to a suitable throttling device not deemed necessary to be here shown.
Extending laterally from the body near the diaphragm is a hollow boss 16 having a gasolene line connecting tube 17 projecting from one side and opening laterally into the boss. The interior of this boss is threaded so as to receive a threaded hollow plug 18 having lateral openings 19. In the end of this plug is a strainer 20, and this plug end Specification of Letters Patent.
fits in a reduced part of the hollow in the boss 16. From this reduced part a minute orifice 20 opens which aflords communication with the interior of the body 10. Thus any gasolene entering through the tube 17 passes through the plug and strainer before reaching the orifice through which it passes into the body 10.
At 21 is a second hollow boss the outer end of which is closed by a closure 22 having a centrally disposed opening 22 for the admission of air. This second boss communicates with the interior of the body through an orifice 23 and contains an air strainer in the form of a felt washer 24.
In the delivery tube 11, is formed a lateral opening 25 wherein is located an insulating bushing 26 through which passes the threaded end 27 of an L-shaped conductor rod, the other end of which extends axiall 1 through the tube 11 as at 28. On the interior portion of the end 27 is an insulating washer 29 and nut 30, while on the exterior or projecting portion of said end is an insulating washer 31 and binding nut 32. Surrounding the end 28 is a thermoelectric coil 33, one end of which is fixed to the end of the rod end 28 while its other end is held against the wall of the tube 11 as by the washer 29. It will be seen that this construction permits one end of an electric circuit to be held by the binding nut 32 while its other end is connected through the carbureter so that the current will pass through the heating coil and thus heat the air passing through the tube. It is to be noted that the mixture which passes through the opening 13 will be directed interiorly of the coil 33, so that the mixture comes intimately into contact with the heating coil.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the principles involved. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a carbureter, a delivery tube having a lateral opening, an insulating bushing in said lateral opening, an L-shaped rod having one leg threaded and extending through the bushing, the remaining end extending longitudinally within the deliv ery tube, and a thermo-electric coil surrounding the last-mentioned end of the rod, one end of the coil being connected to the free extremity of the rod and the remaining end being grounded on the wall of the tube.
2. In a carbureter, a delivery tube having a lateral opening spaced from the forward end of said tube, an insulating bushing in said opening, an L-shaped conduct-or rod having one leg threaded and projecting through said bushing, the remaining end extending axially forward through the tube, a nut wit iin the tube on the threaded end of the rod, a binding nut on the projecting end of the rod, and a coil of resistance wire surrounding the rod and having one extremity connected to the forward end of the rod and its other extremity connected to the wall of the tube.
3. In a carbureter, a delivery tube having a lateral opening spaced from the forward end of said tube, an insulating bushing in said opening, an L-shaped conductor rod iaving one leg threaded and projecting through said bushing, the remaining end extending axially forward through the tube, a nut within the tube on the threaded end of the rod, a binding nut on the projecting end of the rod, a coil of resistance wire surrounding the rod and having one extremity connected to the forward end of the rod and its other extremity connected to the wall of the tube, and a diaphragm at the rear of the tube having a centrally disposed opening arranged to direct the mixture flowing through the d aphragm into the space within the coil.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. V
GEORGE E. CASS.
