PARALLEL JAW PL|ERS APPLICATION FILED NOV. 4, I919.

PARALLEL-JAW PLInns.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 4. 1919. Serial No; 335.636.-
T 0 (all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ANTON MAE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parallel-Jaw Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination tools, and more particularly to a type of combination tool embodying wire cutters associated with a pair of parallel plier aws.
The principal objects of the present invention are: first, to provide a pair of simultaneously operated wire cutters associated with a pair of parallel plier jaws, in order to effect actuation of the wire cutters upon movement of the plier jaws; and second, to so arrange the wire cutters with the plier jaws that multiple leverage will be obtained for increasing the biting power of the wire cutters, and to accomplish this end the leverage afforded by the handles of the device is compounded by the actuating members associated with the jaws, thus materially simplifying the construction of the tool and increasing its eflieiency.
Furthermore the tool is so constructed that Attention is invited to my prior Patent #1,313,399, issued August 19, 1919, on-pliers, upon which the present invention is a modification and an improvement.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of the jaw portion of the device,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the pliers,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional'view through one of the handles of the pliers showing in detail the connection of the jaw portion and the assembled relation thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective View in section showing in detail the wire cutter mounted in the jaw portions.
In the drawings wherein like characters ofreference indicate like or similar parts throughout the several views, A and B designate a pair; of parallel plier jaws, each provided with the usual serratedsurface C for frictionallyengaging an object placed between the pairof jaws. Reduced exten sions l and 2 formed on therespective jaws opposite the noses thereof and having their opposed edgescut away, are sliclab-ly carried in sleeves 3 which are pivotally mounted as at 1 in the grip portio-nsrof the handles A and B and have retaining bars 5 mounted therein for an obvious purpose.
As both thejaws A and B- differ materially in certain details of construction I shall take them up separately for the sake of clarity and then describe their combined operation in order to show how other parts of the invention (hereinafter described) are associated with them. Referring particularly to the jaw B, a substantially arcuate arm 6 is formed thereon adjacent the reduced extension 2 thereof, and has the edge'thereof opposed to the outer edge of thejaw ground on both sides to provide a knife edge 7 which constitutes one ofthe elements of one of the wire cutters, hereinafterdescribed in detail. Adjacent the arm 6 and in line with the knife edge 7 is a dovetailed groove 8 adapted for reception of an arm 9 secured within a dovetail recess in the jawA, as at 9 and provided with a knife edge 10 in registration with the knife edge 7 on the arm 6.
The outer edge of the jaw A is ground down at both sides to form a knife edge 11 which is adapted to coact with a knife edge 12 formed on the auxiliary jaw member 13 which has its reduced shank 14 mounted on on the lateral extensionl? on the jaw A.
Patented Aug. er, teen.
The arm 18 on the jaw B is received within a reduced portion1-9 in the aw A and en-;
gages the shoulder formed thereby to lie flush with the outer surface thereof, and is pivoted as at 20 to the end of the shank 14 of the auxiliary jaw 13 whereby to move the same upon actuation of jaws A and B.
The bifurcated handle elements A and B are crossed and the arms of the bifurcations 06 and l thereof are pivoted as at 21 and secured by pins '22 to the jaws A and B respectively, suitable openings 28 being pro vided in the jaw members for receiving the pins as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The arms are struck outwardly for a distance to receive thearms y and close the of the jaw B and the auxiliary jaw 13 is positioned and secured by the pin 15 between the ears .16 with its shank 14 pivotally engaged by the arm 18 on the jaw B. The knife edge 12 will consequently be in registration with the knife edge 11 on the jaw A. "The handle elements are then crossed and secured as at 21' and the extensions l and 2 of the jaws A and B placed in the sleeves 3 pivoted in the grip sections thereof. The handles A and B are then secured as at 22 to the jaws A and B.
In operation upon moving the jaws A and B the arm 9 is 'moved in the dovetailed groove 8 into engagement with'the knife construction,
edge 7 on the arm 6 thus cutting any wires that would be disposed therebetween and in the same operation the auxiliary jaw 13 is moved so that the knife edges 11 and 12 engage for a like purpose.
WVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that minor changes in combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
vVhat I claim is: r 7
1. The combination in pliers having relatively movable jaws, one of which is provided with a knife edge; of an arm on one of the jaws having a knife edge, a second arm having a knife edge on the other jaw and adaptedto approach the knife edge 011 the first jaw upon relative movement of the jaws, an auxiliary jaw having a knife edge, and means connected with the jaws for moving the same relative to each other and actuating the auxiliary jaw to approach the knife edge of the first-named jaw.
2. The combination in pliers having relatively movable jaws, one of which is provided with a knife edge; of an arcuate arm on one of the jaws ground to form a knife edge, an arm on the other of the jaws ground to form a knife edge and adapted to approach the first-named arm on movement of the jaws relative to each other, an auxiliary jaw having a knife edge and con nected with the second-named jaw, and means for actuating the aws whereby the knife edge of the auxiliary jaw is moved to approach the knife edge of the first-named v 3. vThe combination in pliers having relatively movable jaws, one of which is pro- 4. The combination in pliers having rela tively movable jaws, one of which is provided with a knife edge; of'an arcuate arm on one of the jaws ground to form a knife edge, an arm. on the other of the jaws ground to form a knife edge and adapted so approach the first-named arm on movement of the jaws relative to each other, ears formed'on an extension of the first-named jaw, an auxiliary aw pivoted between the ears on said first-named aw, a second arm on the second-named aw pivotally connect- 2 ed with the auxiliary jaw, and means for actuating said jaws whereby the respective knife edges are caused to approach one another to sever an intervening wire.
5.-Tn pliers of the character described,
relatively movable jaws, one of said jaws being provided with a knife' edge, an arm pivotallysupported upon the jaw having the'knife edge and provided with a mum panion knife edge to cooperate withthe latter, means actuating the arm and acted upon by the other aw' to effect the approach of the knife edges toward each other, and means for actuating the jaws for the opening and closing thereof.
Intestimony whereof, I aflix my signa ture hereto.
