Be it known that I, AMRosIo VALENTIN Lrnz, citizen of the Republic of Cuba, residing at Marianao, Province of Habana. Republic of Cuba, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leaf-Turners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved music leaf turner and copy holder, adapted to be used by musicians on a piano, organ, or other musical instrument, for turning the leaves of sheet music, or the leaves of music books, and also adapted to be used by copyists for holding manuscript, books or the like while copying the same.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction, is exceedingly compact, is strong and durable, and by means of lwhich the leaves of sheet music or the like can be readily and expeditiously turned.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in theconstruction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In thev accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a music leaf turner and copy holder constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.

In the embodiment of my invention as here shown, I provide an upright oblong rectangular frame which comprises a base 5, atop 2, vertical end walls 6, 7, a horil Specication of Letters Patent.

zontal bar 3 spaced from the top 2, and a horizontal bar 4 spaced from the base 5` The end walls are provided on their outer sides with ratchet teeth 11 as shown. The end walls are preferably shaped as shown in Figs 5, 6 and 7, to provide each of them with a forwardly extending offset at the lower end and a rearwardly extending off- Set at the upper end. Above these front offset portions are connected by a wall or front plate 1 and which extends from the bar 4 to the bar 3. A similar but narrower plate 1 connects the lower front offset portions of the end walls and also connects the base 5 and bar 4. i
A shelf 17 to support a book or music sheet, is provided at the ends with slides 16 which engage and are movable vertically on the ratchet tooth a of the frame and are each provided with a holding pawl 13 which is pivoted as at 14 between ears 15 with which the slides are formed. The said pawls have their upper ends turned inwardly as at 12 to engage the ratchet teeth and are normally held in engaged position by means of springs 18, said springs having their outer ends connected to the pawls as at 19 and their inner ends connected to the slides as at 20. Hence the shelf is arranged for manual vertical adjustment, according to the height of the book or music sheet to be used on the leaf turner.
T o additionally secure the back of a book or a manuscript or the like, I provide a pair of clips which are arranged at the ends of the leaf turner or copy holder and each of which comprises a pair of angle members 59, 62. Said angle members are secured to the rear side of the holder as by means of Vscrews 60, as shown in Fig. 2, and each of said members 59 is provided with upper and lower inwardly extending guides 61 between which the member 62 slides, said members 59, 62, being arranged in partially overlapping relation and slidably connected together. Each member 62 is provided with an adjusting pin 64 which isl revolubly mounted therein and is provided at the front end with a head 63. The rear end of the pin is screw threaded and engages a nut 66 on the rear side of the member 59 as shown in Fig. 1. A coiled extensile spring 65 is arranged on each pin 64 and bears between the members 59, 62, and tends to move the member 62 forwardly and from the face or front wall l of the device. By turning the pin inthe required direction, the members 62 may be moved against the tension of the spring toward the face or front l to clamp the back of a book or the like therebetween and hence hold the same securely, as will be understood.
l also provide a plurality of leaf turning arms 27, of which any suitable number may be used, four of such arms being here shown. The inner end of each arm is pivotally mounted as at 2G on a vertical shaft 23 and is also provided with a pinion 25. rlhe outer end of each arm is turned downwardly and forked as at 28 to engage and hold the upper edge of a leaf. The shaft 23 is arranged midway between the ends of the frame and has its ends secured in openings in the bars 2, 3, as shown in Fig. 7 An arm 24 which is secured on the upper side of the bar 3 receives the lower end of the shaft 23. A ssociated with each pinion 25 and engaging the same, is a sector gear 29. Said sector gears, like the pinions 25, are arranged in superposed relation and are revolubly mounted on a vertical shaft 22, the ends of which are secured in openings in the bars 2, 3. Associated with each sector gear is a rod 32 which has a vertical pin 30 extending through an opening in the sector gear and secured by means of a cotter 3l as shown in detail in Fig. ll. rllhe opposite end of each rod 32 is pivotally connected to the arm 33 of a bell crank 33. Said bell cranks are pivotally mounted on horizontally arranged shafts 34, the said shafts being secured in openings in the front plate or wall l and in a triangular back plate 35 which is secured on the rear side of one upperV corner of the frame of the device, as shown in Fig. 2.
Key levers 43 are provided to enable the leaf turning arm 27 to be operated manually. The said key levers are pivotally mounted as at 44 and their front ends e1:- tend through an opening S with which the plate l is provided. Notches which comlmunicate with the lower side of said opening serve to receive the key levers when their outer ends are depressed. Each key lever is provided with a iinger piece 45, the said finger pieces being here shown as lyreshape, but they may be of any suitable form or design. Each key lever is provided on its under side, near its rear end, with a notch 58 and has its rear end connected to the arm 332 of one of the bell cranks 33. The rods which connect the key levers to the bell cranks are each composed of a pair of members 39,41 and a turn buckle 40 which connects said members together. Hence said rods 42 may be adjusted longitudinally by means of the turnlbuckles,as
will be understood, this greatly facilitating the assembling and adjusting of the parts of the music leaf turner. A coiled retractile spring 46 is provided for each key lever, each of vsaid springs having its lower end connected to an angle bar 49 on the upper rear side of the base 5 and having its upper end engaged in an opening 47 of one of the key levers. The said springs'normally draw the rear or inner ends of the key levers downwardly, thus normally holding the key levers in horizontal position and causing the bell cranks 33 and rod 32 to partly turn the sector gears 29 clockwise, so that the pinions 25 turn counterclockwise and normally hold the leaf turning arms 27 at the right hand side ofl the device. The said arms 27 are of unequal length and are normally arranged in approximately the same vertical plane. To turn the leaves of the sheet of music, book or copy on the device, the key levers are successively operated by Y the user. l/Vhen the front end of a key lever is depressed, the rear end thereof rises, thus causing the rod 32 to partly turn the associated bell crank. 33, thelatter by means of the rod 32 causing the associated sector gear 29 to move in counterclockwise direction so that the associated pinion 25 turns in the reverse direction and thereby causes the arm 27 to turn the leaf.
To hold the leaf when thus turned, a detent 50 is provided for each key lever. The said detents have their upper ends pivoted to arms 52, the said arms being secured by screws 53 to a bar 54 on the bar 4. Each detent has an inclined pin 51 arranged in the path of a key lever and is normally held in such path by means of a spring 56, the said spring being secured to the bar 54 as at 57 rlhisbar 54 is secured to bar 4 by screws 55 as shown in Fig. 9. AllV the detents can be simultaneously removed by removing the bar 54, as will be understood. This construction greatly facilitates the assembling` and adjusting of the machine.
When a key lever is depressed to operate one of Jthe leaf turning arms, its inner end ,moves upwardly, and the detent pin 5lI snaps under the key lever, into its notch by the action of the spring 56, and holds the key lever in such position. However, the spring yields and enables the detent to clear the key lever, when the latter is manually restored to its initial, horizontal position, as will be understood.
