If this happens or if for any other reason a fresh filling carrier is not in position in the hopper ready for transfer upon the call for filling replenishment it follows that when the call for replenishment occurs the mechanism will go through the operations of transfer but without transferrii any fresh lilling carrier from the hopper to the lay with the result that one or inore picks of imperfect weaving will occur before the looin is stopped.

T he general construction and operation of the l orthrop type of automatic filling replenishing looni and the general construction and operation of a double fork looni of that type are both well known to those skilledin the art, and hence it will he necessary to describe only those features particularly related to the present invention.

WVhen the running filling carrier. has become wholly or partially exhausted suitable indicating mechanism sets in motion mechanism by which replenishment is effectedby a transfer ofa fresh filling carrier from the hopper to the lay '7 and by which the exhausted filling carrier is forced out through the lay. This transfer is usually efiected by a transferrer 8 pivoted upon a stud 9 and which. upon the call for filling replenishment swings downwardly forcing the filling carrier 41 resting against the. abutment 6 out of the hopper on to the lay which is then located directly beneath.
. It will be recognized that if a fresh filling carrier is not located beneath the transferrer or in position for transfer that the transferring mechanism will'go through its motions without effecting any transfer, and the loom will continue to run with the exhausted filling carrier thus making one ormore picks of imperfect cloth which it is highly desirable to avoidespecially in the automatic filling replenishing loom provided with a feeler I fordetecting substantial exhaustion of filling in the running shuttle and effecting transfer before complete exhaustion takes place. i v
This difficulty is obviated by the present invention by means of a mechanism which stops the operation of the loom if the sup ply of filling carriers has become exhausted, or if a fresh filling carrier is not in position for transfer in the hopper, and in the preferred form illustrated this is effected through the weft fork mechanism and preferably through the right hand weft fork mechanism of a double fork loom.
The construction and operation of the weft fork mechanism of a double fork loom is; fully disclosed in the patent to Draper.
In the construction illustrated the left hand weft'fork 10 when it is not tilted as by contact with the filling catches the hooked end of the vibrating weft hammer 11 and thus effects the forward movement of the fork slide 12 ande'ventually in the usual manner operates the knock off lever 13 to throw the shipper handle 14 out of its retaining notch and allowit to spring to the end of its slot 15 and disconnect the driving power thus stopping the loom all in a familiar and well known mannen. The action of the right hand weft fork 16 is similar. .Vhen it is not tilted, as by engagement with the filling, it catches the hooked end of an auxiliary vibrating weft hammer 17 and in a similar ,manner acts to effect the stopping'of the loom. Various means are provided for del laying the action of the weft forks, and vapresent invention a full filling carrier has just been started in operation when the action of the present invention comes into play it is quite immaterial in what manner or in what degree of promptness the Weft fork mechanism acts'to stop the loom.
In the present invention the stud 9 for the transferrer is prolonged and carries rig-- idly mounted thereon a bracket 18. This bracket conveniently serves as a mounting for a tip support 19 for the filling carrier when in position for transfer. This tip support 19 is shown as pivoted at 20 upon the bracket 18 andnormally held against a stop 21.
The bracket 18 is provided with a depend bracket 18 and extending along the front of the hopper stand 'and mounted'at the other. end in a bracket 30 extending up from the, hopper stand. A helical spring 31 engaging at one end the bracket 18 and at the other end a collar 32 adjustably secured on the shaft 29 acts to rock the shaft to swing the feeler 25 downwardly. The shaft 29 ,adjacent the bracket 30 has clamped thereto bymeansof a clamp 33 an arm 34 extending rearwardly and bent laterally and rearwardly so that its free end rests over the looped'end of one of the weft forks as for example the weft fork 16;
The operation will now be apparent. So long as a filling carrier 4 is in place in the hopper in position for transfer, the feeler 25 is held in its normal elevated position with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, and with the end of the arm 34 so far above the looped end of the weft fork vas not to' interfere with the action of the weft fork. If replenishment takes place and another filling carrier comes'into positionfor trans fer, there is nothing to support the feeler 25 and it consequently through the action of gravity or aidedby the spring 31 falls or swings about the pivot. 22 downwardly and rearwardly. This results in moving the link 26 rearwardly, in rocking the shaft 29, and in lowering the end of the arm 34 into contact with the looped end of the filling fork 16. The parts are so proportioned that when this takes place the looped end of the weft fork is held downwardly in position to be caught by the hooked end of the weft hannner. Consequently the weft fork mech anism is al'liected in the same manner as it would be by absence of filling in front of the fork, and consequently stopping of the loom is effected inthe usual manner. As already pointed out, it makes no difference how soon the 100111 stops and consequently it makes no difference just what is the action, whether delayed or not, of the weft fork mechanism because when the feeler 25 detects absence of a fresh filling carrier for the next transfer, a full filling carrier has just been transferred to, and is running on, the lay.
lVhen the loom has been stopped under the action of the mechanism of this inven' tion the operative then replenishes the hopper or places a fresh filling carrier in position in the hopper ready for transfer and consequently no operation of the transferring mechanism can take place without a fresh filling carrier actually being transferred.
In the construction illustrated Figs. 1 and 2 the feeler is shown as positioned to indicate the absence of a fresh filling carrier from transferring position, but it is obvious that this is but one, although a preferred position, which the feeler may occupy and that its broad function in detecting a pre determined degree of depletion of the sup ply of fresh filling carriers in the hopper or in detecting the absence of a fresh filling carrier at a predetermined point in the hopper may allow the feeler to detect at any other predetermined point. In Fig. 3 the feeler is shown as located to detect absence of the fresh filling carrier at a different predetermined position in the hopper.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper containing a supply of fresh filling carriers for success've transfer to the lay, means for detecting a predetermined depletion of said supply, loom stopping means, weft fork mechanism operative to effect actuation of the loom stopping means, and means controlled by the detecting action of the detecting means acting to render the weft fork mechanism operative to effect the actuation of the loom stopping means.

An automatic filling replenishing loom 7 comprising a hopper containing a supply of fresh filling'carriers for successive transfer to the lay, a transferrer stud, .a bracket mounted upon said stud, a filling carrier tip support mounted on said bracket, a feeler l0 pivotally mounted on said bracket and held against movement by the tip of a filling carrier in position in the hopper for transfer to the lay, looni stopping means, and means for eli'ecting the actuation of the looin stoppingmeans by or through the movement of 15 the feeler whereby absence of a fresh filling carrier from position in the hopper for transfer efi'ects the stopping of the loom;
