BOOKBINDING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed April 2, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Joi-rN P. NORMANN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bookbinding-Machine Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bookbinding and has more especial reference to a novel attachment for wire stapling machines.
The dominant object of the invention is to provide a guide attachment for wire stapling machines, whereby a foldable book having either stub or duplicate leaves provided with tearing lines to facilitate separation thereof can be so arranged when folded as to have each of the leaves through the book fold on the tearing line, thus, rendering the book flat and compact.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a guide which is capable of adjustment in order that foldable books varying in size may be bound thereby.
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of an attachment of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and eliiciency of operation high.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a wire stapling machine with my improved attachment applied thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the novel attachment.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views, I have shown byway of illustration, the improved guide attachment as applied to the work bed of a conventional type of stapling machine designated S.
The attachment comprises a substantially rectangular plate 1 having a straight for ward edge, which edge is sharpened or tapered. suflieiently to cause the acute ben ding Specification of Letters Patent.

or folding of the book at a line on the tearing line and constitutes a guide which can be adjusted according to the position of the tearing lines upon the book leaves, that is, whether the same are arranged in proximity of the point at which the various leaves of the book are bound or are arranged at a greater distance therefrom. A rectangular opening 2 is formed within the plate 1, and obviously, serves as means for permitting the stapling apparatus of the machine to pass therethrough in order that the binding wires may be securely clenched upon the reverse side of the book. Elongated slots 3 are also formed in the plate and are disposed. longitudinally of the opening 2, whereby, set screws 4 may be passed therethrough and turned into engagement with suitable screw threaded recesses formed in the work receiving bed of the stapling machine S. By loosening the set screws 4, the plate may be moved longitudinally of the work bed in order that the sharpened straight edge of the same may be adjusted with relation to the forward edge of the said work bed. By this means, foldable books varying in size may be properly positioned upon the guide plate in order that the heads of the same will be so positioned with relation to the stapling apparatus of the machine as to be eiliciently clenched or bound thereby.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent to workers in the art, that with my improved guide attachment, foldable books may be bound in such a manner as to permit the same to be foldable flat and smoothly when finished; the book during the operation is folded over the forward edge of the guide plate 1, thereby, so positioning the perforations or tearing lines of the various pages of the same as to accord with the shape assumed thereby when in its folded position.
It is of course to be understood, that the invention is not limited to use upon wire stapling machines, but may be equally as well adapted for use upon various forms and types of book binding machines, irrespective of the construction of the same.
As above indicated, I do not wish to be understood as confining the invention to the particular embodiment chosen for illustration herein, nor to the exact construction, arrangement and adaption of the parts shown and described, but I reserve the right to make any changes and alterations that fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
