Description

J. M. CARLSON.
CAR DOOR.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2. 1919.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
I 3mm efofinulfCarlmiv PATENT OFFICE.
J'OZEDSI' M. CARLSON, 0F SANDSTONE, MINNESOTA.
GAR-DOOR-v Application filed June 2, 1919. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JOHN M. CARLsoN,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandstone, in the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in supplemental doors for box freight cars to enable the same to be used for hauling grain and thelike.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a door made of slats and provided with means whereby the slats may be rolled up at either the upper or lower end of the door.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement. of the several parts,
to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describingmy invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a partial side view 'of a box car provided with my invention;
Fig.2 is a sectional view through the door; Fig.3 is an enlarged detailed view of a part of the door. In these views 1 indicates the body ofth car which'is provided with the usual door opening adapted to be closed. by the door 2. In carrying out my invention I provide a door 3 located on the inner face of the doorway for holding the grain in-the car. This 0 door is composed of aplurality of cross slats 4 which havetheir edges connected together by having their lower edges rolled into tubular shape, as at 5 and their upper edges rolled into substantially semicircular shape as shown at 6, with the tubular portions of one slat engaging the semicircular ortion of the slat immediately beneath it. hus the slats are flexibly connected together so that the entire door may be rolled up when de- Specification of Letters Patent.

sired. The ends of the supplemental door are connected to the chains 4 and these chains are secured to the rollers 7 which are located above and below the door opening and are suitably journaled in the car. Each roller is provided with a toothed wheel 9 and a dog 10 pivotedto a stationary part and engaging with said wheel to prevent turning movement of said rollers in one direction. A hand lever 11 is pivoted to one of the. journals of each roller and this lever carries a dog 12 for engaging the toothed wheel. In this way either roller may be ro-l tated by its hand lever so as to move the door upwardly or downwardly and thus roll it around the roller. The dogs 10 are provided with releasing means which consist of rods 13 secured thereto and extending to the exterior of the car. The upper rod is pro vided with an extension 13 so that the upper dog may be operated by a person standing on the platform and the lever 11 is also provided with an extension 11 for the same purpose.
I prefer to connect the chains 4 with the journal pins 7 of the rollers so that said chains will not interfere with the rolling up of the door on the rollers.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it-to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall withv JOHN M. CARLSON.
