Description

A. S. AILES.
AUXILIARY SAFE LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED IAN.2o. 1920.

TAFT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
AUXILIARY SAFE-LOCK.
lSpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application filed January 20, 1920. Serial No. 352,701.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ADnrAN S. AILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Auxiliary `Safe-Locks, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to auxiliary safelocks and is particularly adapted for use in connection with the ordinary forms of locks for safes and vaults.
An object of this invention is to provide an auxiliary lock which will operate to lock the door of the safe when the main lock has been tampered with, so that if the main lock is burned out as by an Oxy-acetylene flame or is blown lout with an explosive, the bolt of the auxiliary lock will be released vand will prevent the door being opened.
This Aand other objects are accomplished by my invention which is fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a partial rear elevation of a safe or vault door showing' my auxiliary lock as applied to the ordinary safe lock; Fig. 2 is an venlarged partial section on the line 2h2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
I have illustrated my invention as applied to the door 10 of a safe or vault 11, having the ordinary form of lock 12 which has an operating member 13 operatively attached by means of a bar 14 to a series of bolts 15. A bolt 16 is also operated at the same time in a well known manner by means of a bell crank 17.
The invention consists of an additional bolt 18 which is carried preferably in a pipe 19 which is freed at its forward end and screwed into a stationary part lOfL of the door 10. rIhe opposite end 19n of this pipe is closed and is screwed into a block 2O which rests against the inner face of the door.
The bolt 18 is pressed outwardly by means of the spring 21 which is supported upon the closed end 19a of the pipe. The bolt has an annular groove 18 which is adapted to be engaged by a detent 22 which is pivotally supported by means of a bolt 23 on the block 20. The detent is normally held infthe engaged position by means of wires 24 and 24a which preferably pass over the main lock 12 and are secured to the posts 25 and 25a and the adjusting screw 24". Springs 2G and 27 are pivotally fastened to the detent and tend to disengage the detent from the bolts 18. This is prevented, as previously stated, by the wire 24.
It will thus be seen that as long as the wire 24 is unbroken the detent will hold the bolts 18 in the retracted position. The lock will then operate in the usual manner to lock and unlock the door of the safe. If, however, the main lock 12 is blown out, as by a charge of nitroglycerin that part of the wire 24 which lies between the posts 25 and 25a will be broken and the springs 26 and 27 will raise the detent 22 releasing the bolt 18 which will then be forced forward to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, thereby securely locking the door of the safe even though the safe blowers are able to withdraw the bolts of the main lock.
It very frequently happens, however, that an Oxy-acetylene torch is used to burn the lock away. In that case one of the wires 24 or 24"L will be burned in two and the bolt 18 released as before' V\7hile I have shown and described but a single embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes therefore in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new and by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a safe having a door, a main lock thereon, an auxiliary lock bolt, aA detent normally holding said auxiliary lock bolt in an inoperative position, means tending to force the auxiliary lock bolt into 0perative position, means tending to disengage said detent, a flexible member secured at one end to said detent and at the other to a stationary member whereby said flexible member when severed will release said auxiliary lock bolt.
2. In combination, a safe having a door, a main lock thereon, an auxiliary lock bolt, a detent normally holding said auxiliary lock bolt in an inoperative position, means tending to release the detent and means normally restraining said last-named means includ.
desire to secure ing a member associated With the main locking mechanism adapted to remove the restraint when itselfl released.
3. In combination, a safe having a door, a main lock thereon, an auxiliary lock bolt, a detent normally holding said .auxiliary lock bolt in an inoperative position, means tending to force the auxiliary lock bolt into operative position, means tending to disengage said detent, a flexible member secured at one end to said detent and at the other to a stationary member whereby said flexible member when severed will release said aux# iliary lock bolt, said flexible member being stretched over the combination box and the actuating bar of the main locking mechamsm.
4. An auxiliary lock adapted to be applied to the door of a safe having a main lock, said auxiliary lock comprising a bolt, a spring normally pressing said bolt outwardly, a detent normally holding said bolt in retracted position against said spring, a spring acting torelease said detent and a Wire for retaining said detent in engage- L ment with said bolt and adapted to be passed over the main lock so as to be broken if said main lock is forcibly removed, thereby releasing said bolt.
