Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BEREZNAY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Throop, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad- Gates, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to railroad gates, and especially to that type of gate which is automatically operated as a train approaches and as it leaves a road crossing.
The object of this invention is the provision of means for closing off a cross road from traffic at the intersection thereof with a railroad, when a train is approaching and when it is at the cross road, said means being self contained and independent of the aid of any outside agency.
A further object of this invention is the provision of further means for opening the gates after the train has passed, whereby trafiic is again allowed to cross the tracks.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of audible and visible warning signals operative when the gates are closed, for notifying anyone on the cross road that a train is approaching.
To attain these and other objects, I employ the devices shown in their preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which,

1n the practical embodiment of my invention, one of the usual railroad ties as 1, sup porting the tracks 2, has mounted thereon a bracket 3, in which shaft 4 is revolubly mounted. A pinion 5 i mounted on shaft 4, as is sprocket wheel 6. Sprocket chain 7 operatively connects wheel 6 with sprocket wheel 8 on shaft 9, said shaft being suitably supported by bearings 10 in covered casing 11, suitably set into the railroad bed, the cover of said casing being omitted from the drawings for clearness.
The ends of shaft 9 carry bevel gears 12,
which engage bevel gears 13 on upstanding shaft 14, which shaft is supported at its upper end by hearing 16 having branched arms 15 extending therefrom and suitably set firmly into the ground, said shaft 14 being mounted at its lower end in bearing 26,
which is also set firmly into the ground. Cleats 17 of the gate are mounted on shaft 14 and carry suitable upright rails 18. Electric bell 19 receives current from a source not shown through conductors 20 attached to post 21, when said gate is in its closed position. A lamp 22, having a red glass 23 on the face thereof parallel to the gate, is suitably attached thereto, the side 24 of said lamp having a colorless glass therein, visible from the cross road when the gate is open.
Two gates and two sets of mechanisms for operating said gates, similar in all respects, are provided, one set of mechanism for turning shaft 9 being arranged on that side of shaft 9 from which the train comes, the other being arranged on the other side of shaft 9, both gates being operated by the turning of shaft 9 through gears 12 and 13 and shaft 14 connected thereto. A rack as 25, of suitable length, is attached to the under side of any suitable portion of the train for engaging pinion 5 on the approach side of the cross road, for turning shafts 14 to close the gates. hen the same rack 25 engages that pinion 5 which is on the far side of the cross road, the train moving in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, shaft 9 is rotated in the opposite direction, whereby the gates are opened.
It will be understood that the operation pinions 5 may be placed a sufficient distance from the cross road to allow the gates to be closed in ample time to prevent collision and opened without waste of time after the train has passed. Closing of the gate will make contact between the wires leading from bell 19 and contacts 20, whereby said bell will ring continuously until the train has passed, and the gate has been opened. The red glass 23 will serve as an additional warning at night when the lamp is lighted, and the gate closed "by the approach of the train, though only a white light will appear to an observer on the cross road when the gate is open.
What I claim is:
In a device of the character described, a swingable gate, an upright shaft on which said gate is mounted, a bevel gear on said shaft, a horizontal shaft, a bevel gear on said horizontal shaft meshing with the bevel gear on said upright shaft, a sprocket wheel on said horizontal shaft, a pinion in spaced relation to said horizontal shaft, a second horizontal shaft carrying said pinion, a
