GREASE CONTAINER AND DISPENSER FOR HEAVY GREASES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. J. Woon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease Containers and Dispensers for Heavy Greases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a grease container and dispenser for heavy greases. It is the object and purpose of this invention to provide a grease container from which heavy greases may be readily dispensed without the necessity of personal contact with the grease as heretofore, and my invention includes many novel features of construction and operation for efliciently attaining this end.
Working embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a partial side and sectional view of a device made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the cover and spring operated follower removed from the container.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the upper portion of the container with the cover on.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the piston member of the device.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section through a modified construction of grease container and dispenser.
Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof.

Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the preferred construction of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a cylindrical container having a body 1 is provided having a bottom 2 of cast iron integral with Specification of Letters Patent.

which is an upstanding annular lip 3 surrounding the lower edge of the body 1 which is of sheet metal. Supporting feet 4 are cast integral with the bottom as is also a cylinder 5 the lower surface of which is 1n the same plane as the lower surfaces of feet at, it. in effect. providin an additional support for the container. i wide opening 6 is made through a side of the cylinder adjacent its upper end which communicates with a similar opening in the body 1 so that a clear passage is made between the interior of the c linder and the interior of the container. l he upper end of cylinder 5 is closed by a cover 7 below which a piston 8 is located and connected to the lower end of a rod 9 mounted to move up and down through said cover. A yoke 10 is fastened to the upper end of the piston rod 9 having pivotal connection to a lever 11 between the ends thereof. One end of the lever, called for convenience the forward end, is pivotally connected to the upper end of a. link 12 which at its lower end has pivotal connection to a bracket 13 cast integral with the cylinder 5.
Adjacent the lower end of the cylinder 5 a projection 14 is cast and which has an opening therethrough to the interior of the cylinder. A tube 15 threads into the projection 14. A ball valve 16 seats in and normally closes the reduced opening shown in Fig. 1 between the piston and the tube 15, being held in place by spring 17. A strong coil spring 18 is located between 1ever 11 and tube 15 having arms 19 engaged respectively with said lever and tube as shown. The. rear end of the lever 11 is turned to lie substantially horizontal and provide a horizontal foot member 11 for engagement by the operator.
The container 1 is filled with heavy grease and the upper end is closed by a cover 20 having depending sides in which oppositely disposed bayonet slots 21 are cut adapted to receive oppositely projecting pins 22 on the container. A vertical rod 23 passes through the top at its lower end carrying a follower plate .24 shaped to the inner sides of said container. Between said plate and the top a strong coil spring 25 is located the tendency of which is to force the plate and the grease under it downwardly.
Under the influence of spring 18 the nor-- mal position of lever 11 is that shown in Fig. 1 permitting the follower plate 24 to force the grease through the opening 6 into the cylinder 5. The operator places his foot on the lever and forces it down, the grease within the cylinder 5 being forced out through tube 15 as piston 8 is moved down with the lever. Any return of the grease to the cylinder 5 is checked by valve 16. Re moval of the foot pressure from member it permits it to rise under the influence of spring 18 and the operation may be indefinitely repeated. It ispof course, understood that any suitable conduit may be attached to the end of the tube 15.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 5 to T inclusive the construction described in my former application for patent Serial No. 151.202 is modified so as to permit the handling of heavier greases than such previously described construction will handle. The container 1. bottom 2 sup porting feet 4. top 20", with which is asso ciated rod 23. follower plate 24 and coil spring 25 are very similar in all respects to the corresponding elements in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The bottom, however. has an outlet 26 provided with a tapered seat 27 with which outlet a flexible conduit 28 is connected. A barrel 29 having a lower open end is adapted to seat at such lower end against the tapered seat 27 and extends upwardly through suitable openings in the follower plate 24 and the cover 20 to a point above the cover. The upper end is closed by a plug 30 through which a rod 31 passes loosely it having a handle 32 at its upper end and a piston 253 on the lower end. A member 34 is connected to the upper end of the barrel and at its lower end is turned substantially horizontal providing a lip which enga es with the top to prevent withdrawal of t e barrel on the upward stroke of the piston. This container operates in identically the same manner as in my previously described application except that in addition to the suction drawing the grease into the barrel on upward stroke of the piston, the follower 24 forces the grease downwardly and helps get it into the barrel. whereby t e mechanism is adapted to handle much heavier greases than otherwise. A pin or rod 35 projects laterally from the plug 31) and may be used in holding the barrel 29 in lower position while at the same time an upward stroke of the piston is made to draw grease in the flexible conduit 28 back into the barrel.
Various other modifications in construction may be used in embodying my invention. For instance. in Figs. 8 and 9 l have shown a second modified form on which the container 1" has a cover 20" detachably secured thereto in the same manner as heretofore described, there being a rod 23 passing through the cover at the lower end of which a follower 24" is secured which is forced against the grease in the cabinet by coil spring 25. The base 2 is supported by depending legs 4 and from the center thereof a cylinder 36 projects downwardly it having a lateral outlet passage 87 which communicates with the interior of a tube 38 attached to the cylinder. At its outer end the tube is supported by a bracket comprising an upright section 39 and a relatively long horizontal section -10 as shown. A lateral outlet 41 is made to the tube 38 adjacent its outer end to which any suitable flexible hose 42 may be connected for passage of the grease therethrough.
A rod 43 is positioned vertically and extends through the cylinder. its upper end carrying a piston 44 while its lower end is pivotally connected at 45 to and between the ends of a foot lever 46 one end of which is pivotally connected to the lower end of a link 47 the other end of which is pivotally connected to one of the legs 4". A coil spring 48 having diverging arms 49 one engaging with the bracket part -10 of the bracket and the other with the lever 46 is located between the lever and bracket. The tendency of the spring is'to elevate the lever and lift the piston 44 above the opening to upper end of the cylinder 36 whereby grease within the container 1 is forced by the follower 24' into the cylinder. Any suitable stuffing box construction such as indicated at 50, may be used to keep the grease from forcing out of the lower end of the cylinder around the rod -13.
In the operation of this modiiication the lever 46 is worked up and down the same as is the lever 11 first described. On the downward stroke of the lever grease within the cylinder 36 is forced out by the piston and on the upward stroke the piston above the cylinder permitting the grease to flow freely from all sides into the cylinder. This con struction has several advantages from a manufacturing standpoint and also by reason of the free passage offered for the grease to the cylinder; and for these reasons the construction is a preferred one.
I claim 1. In a. device of the character described. a container for grease, a smaller auxiliary container for grease adjacent the bottom of the first container and in communication therewith, a cover for said iirst ('(ll'ltflllltl. means for detachably securing the cover in place on said container, a follower to lie above the grease. a rod attached thereto extending upwardly through the cover. a coiled spring normally under compression around the rod and located between the follower and cover to force grease from the container into the auxiliary container, means mounted to move downwardly in the auxiliary container and force grease therein out of the same, there being an outlet opening adjacent the bottom of the auxiliary container. and check means in said outlet per mitting passage of the grease in an outward direction but stopping return thereof, substantially as descnbed.
2. In a device of the character described, a container for greases including a base, a cylinder integral therewith having commu nication at its upper end with the lower end of the container, supporting feet dependmg from the base, a head for the cylinder, a rod passing loosely therethrough, a piston in the cylinder secured to the rod, a lever pivotally connected between its ends to one end of the rod, a link lying between and pivotally connected to one of said supporting feet and one end of the lever. a tube secured to and communicatin with the lower end of the cylinder, a brac et supporting the outer end of the tube and provided with a horizontal extension, a coiled spring interposed between the lever and said horizontal extension having arms engaged therewith thereby tending to elevate the lever to upper position. and means for forcing the grease to the bottom of the container, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, a container for greases. a relatively short hollow cylinder connected adjacent the lower end of the container. there being free passage between the lower end of the container and one end of the cylinder for the passage of grease, a tube connected to and communicating with the other end of the cylinder, a piston in the cylinder, a rod connected thereto. a lever pivotally connected between its ends to the other end of the rod. a bracket supporting the tube, a link disposed between the container and lever and pivotally connected at one end to one end of said lcvcr. yielding means engaging the lever to move it so as to normally position the piston at the end of the cylinder adjacent and beyond the passage bctwccn it and the container, and means in the container forcing the grease therein to the bottom of said containcr.
4. In a device of the character described. a container for greases. a dispensing device associated with and connccicd to the lower end of the container. means tor forcing grease in the container to the lower end thcrccd' and into said dispensing device. a lever and a piston connected thcrcto inclnd d in said dispensing dcvi c operation of which lever in one direction i'orccs grease from the dispensing dcvicc. yielding means normally forcing the lever and comicctral piston in the opposite direction. a conduit for carrying grease from the dispensing device, and means in said conduit stopping return of the grease to the dispensing device on movement of the lever in the opposite direction.
5. In a device of the character described, a container for greases, a relatively short hollow cylinder connected adjacent and below the lower end of the container. there being free passage between the lower end of the container and one end of the cylinder, means for forcing grease from the container into the cylinder. a piston in the cylinder, a tube communicating with the end of the cylinder opposite the end having said passage, a check valve in the inner end of the tube, means for operating the piston downwardly in the cylinder to force grease therein out through said tube, and spring means normally returning the piston to upper position as soon as said first mentioned means is released.
6. In a device of the character described, a vertically positioned container, a dispensing device located below the bottom of the container and including a relatively short and small cylinder, there being free passage between the lower portion of the container and upper part of the cylinder, a piston adapted to be reciproeated in the cylinder and raised above the point of free passage from the container to the cylinder. an outlet member leading from the lower end of said cylinder, means connected to the piston and operable to positively force grease below the piston out of the cylinder through said outlet member. yielding means operatively associated with said first mentioned means normally moving the same to raise the piston to permit passage of grease from the container into said cylinder. means to force the grease from the container into the cylinder. an outlet conduit to the dispensing device and a check valve therein permitting an outward movement of the grease but stopping any return thereof.
7. In a device of the character described. a container for greases having a base. a short hollow cylii'idcr connected to the base. there being free passage between the lower end ot'the container and upper end of the cylinder. an outlet member leading from the lower end of said cylinder. :1 piston adapted to be raised and lowered in the cylinder and elevated suiiicicnily to permit free passage of grease from thc container to the cylinder. means for positively lowering the piston to force the grcasc in the cylinder out oi the outlet. and means carried within the containcr for forcing grcasc into the cylinder when the piston is elevated.
